  • Any ETA on Aeotec Garage Door controllers and Doorbells?

    • +1

The Garage Door Controller is no longer I am sorry to say. The Doorbell 6 will be arrive around Feb 2021.

I think I may have a new in box garage door controller I don’t need.

I've got the Aeotec z-wave garage door controller and love it.

    • +1

Sorry to hear you missed out (and that they're no longer available). I'm quite happy with mine. There are, however, numerous other options available now for controlling a garage door.

      • Yeah I’ve got a zConnect twin dry relay unit that I’m just messing around with now - just a single relay for each door’s button.

Gotta get my head around how best to do the two roller doors though - 1, 2 or 3 relays each for just “activate” or combination of up/stop/down.

  • Hi OP maybe you can help. I've had conflicting answers on this. With this product, can I still use an app/Alexa etc to turn the lights on and off even when the wall switch has been turned off?

You can still use your light switch as normal :)

One of the real advantages of these Z-Wave lighting modules is they work in conjunction with your light switch (as apposed to smart bulbs that become not so smart when you turn the wall switch off!).

If you have a traditional "flop-flop" switch - then the actual switch position will sometimes be in the on position but the lights are off (think of it as a 2-way switch in a hallway) - however, whenever you flip the switch (regardless of its current position), the lights will simply do the opposite to their current state (turn on or off).

If you want to avoid the switch getting visually out of sync, you can replace just your switch (not the entire switch plate) to a push button. If you are looking at installing a Z-Wave dimmer module, then it is certainly advantageous to change your switch mech to a "momentary bell press" switch - this way you can tap for on or off - or press and hold to dim / brighten from the switch. This is optional - if you keep your current "flip-flop" switch with a dimmer module, you will only have on / off control from the switch (no manual dimming control) - but you would still be able to dim through smart control.

      I hope this helps.

Thanks. I ended up getting some Nue ZigBee dimmers but it's really frustrating when someone turns off the wall switch because then they can't operate anymore.

I'll swap them out for the aeotecs instead.

        Appreciate your help. Thanks

  • I should point that you will need a Z-Wave hub to work with Z-Wave devices (Z-Wave uses its own secure, wireless frequency to communicate - far removed from WiFi, so there is no congestion, cross-talk or conflicts - it is also more secure as you have less end-points on your network) - there are a number of "off-the-shelf" hubs available… including Hubitat, SmartThings, Fibaro or Homey.

If you are feeling really adventurous, you could create your own hub (potentially saving a lot of money) using a Raspberry Pi and the Aeotec Z-Stick usb dongle - combine this with open source software like openHAB or Home Assistant (which is what I use) and you will be in a geeks paradise :)

    • just a question with Smartthings, since it uses both Z-Wave and Zigbee, does it automatically choose what it uses to connect to device? ie. it should cover more devices and is user-friendly in that you don't have to set which devices use which frequency?
      Hope that made sense.

      • +1

You are 100% correct… The SmartThings hub is very versatile and connects to a lot of different smart devices and services. Keep in mind though, Zigbee uses 2.4Ghz to communicate, the same band as WiFi. Also, unlike Z-Wave, the Zigbee standard is a bit all over the place… just because a device uses Zigbee, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will work with another Zigbee device.

Thanks — just ordered a bunch.

  • Hi OP - sorry another question. Just trying to control lights. Trying to understand if I need the nano switch or nano dimmer - is dimming capability the only difference, or is there a difference in regards to neutral wiring as well?

    • +1

Dimmer modules can work without a neutral wire… but must be connected to lighting that is dimmable. Switch modules require a neutral and active (and do not dim of course). I hope this helps :)
