Some questions from previous post:

Will these work with Ryzen 5000 series CPUs? Do they need the bios update?

Yes they will work, after a BIOS update. Also no you don't need a 3000 series CPU to update BIOS for this B550 board with its BIOS Flashback (or as Gigabyte branded it as Q-Flash Plus) function (or any B550 boards that have the BIOS Flashback function).

For the two B450 boards, BIOS update is expected to be released in Jan 2021. Due to no BIOS Flashback functions on the B450 boards, you need an existing supported CPU/APU to flash the BIOS.
Update: the BIOS for the Gigabyte B450 I board is out already. See product support webpage for details (BIOS version F60c). (Thanks Unselected)

  • Awesome deal on the b550i great board too.

  • Any advantage to a mini ITX board if I have an ATX case?

    • +1

Sometimes better VRMs - often overclockers use mITX boards for this reason. But you lose out on RAM/PCIE slots. Not worth the trade imho if you got the space.

    • +1

Can't really think of a general one (while each individual may find one depending on his/her own circumstances), other than maybe RAM OC?

It's more for ITX case builds, or if you know you'll be moving to an ITX case from ATX later down the track.

Asus ROG B550-I ITX board also $295 for those looking for a usb-c header itx board

    • Dont forget Cashrewards $10 cashback on $10 spend and and eBay gift cards

      • whats the $10 spend thing? i used cashrewards but only see the 2%?

    • is it better than the gigabyte aside from usb?

    • On the Asus board

      Intel® I225-V 2.5Gb Ethernet

Didn't this chip have packet loss issues? I have been avoiding any boards with this chip as I read this needed a hardware revision from Intel to fix the issue.

  • Gigabyte/MSI B450I for $170
ASRock B550M-ITX/ac for $210 (incl. shipping)
    Gigabyte B550I for $252

Would it be worth it to spend more on the B550 models?

    • +1

It really depends on whether motherboard features (rather than the chipset, so such as ports) suit your need.

Having said that, the main difference between B450 and B550 is PCIe 4.0 if you are running <12 cores (or up to 12 cores if good airflow over the VRM, or 16 cores with airflow directly onto the VRM), considering many of the Ryzen 5000 series features will be enabled on B450 when the BIOS is released.

      • Will be looking to pair it with R5 3600 with potential upgrade to 5600x down the line. I'm looking at a deal that includes a 500GB M.2 SDD and 2TB HDD. Both B450I's only have 1 M.2 slot which might be an issue?

        • +1

The R5 3600 pairs fine with the B450, and so will the 5600X (which uses virtually the same amount of power, if not more efficient). The M.2 + HDD will be okay as long as you don't plan on adding another M.2 stick. Pretty much you are limited to one M.2 drive and the rest will be SATA port drives, so as long as your usage scenario is fine with that.

The ASRock B550m-itx/ac offers very little features over the B450 can't do, with several areas actually a down- or side-grade. Only thing is the Type-C port at the back, and B550's PCIe 4.0. So if none of the two are something you need, it's really a contest between the two Gigabyte boards.

          • @zrmx: Thanks mate, that's really helped me out. I think I might get the Gigabyte B450 and spend the savings on a bigger SSD. Is there any reason why the MSI B450 isn't considered?

            • +1

@rocketrocket: Oh I didn't discuss the MSI as you only brought up the Gigabyte and ASRock boards, so I thought you already narrowed down your options haha.

The MSI board actually have better VRM to handle higher core count CPUs, however personally I consider it less features or not as good vs Gigabyte, such as:
              - USB ports (MSI 4 USB3, 2 USB2 vs Gigabyte 6 USB3)
              - LAN (MSI uses Realtek vs Gigabyte uses Intel chipset, personally I had no issues with Realtek LAN, but some people did and intel just worked out better for them driver wise)
              - MSI board's spec only specified RAM up to 3466MHz speed vs Gigabyte's 3600MHz speed (even though practically R5 3600+B450 is quite well established to not have much issues with 3600MHz, especially after many BIOS updates)

The MSI board does have a PS/2 port if you still have equipment that needs it.

It's a consideration between whether you need the better VRM or prefer having the better features, which one will be more useful. VRM-wise I think both boards are more than adequate, especially you'll be running a very efficient 6 core CPU (incl down the track when you upgrade), so then it's a contest of the features.

              • @zrmx: Hey mate, you seem super knowledgeable, I want to run a 3900x which B550i itx board is best for me?

                • @la838: Hi. Lol more just watching too much youtube videos (I have very limited hands-on experience) and some forum reading.

Pretty much any of the B550 itx boards will be able to run the 3900X fine, even the more "budget" ASRock B550m-itx/ac (every other boards are all of very good quality). HOWEVER, if you do run it with ASRock B550m-itx/ac, you'll need good airflow onto the VRM to cool them (its VRM heatsink is almost functionally non-existent).

In terms of which one B550 board really depends on your needs in terms of features (e.g. port selection, BIOS Flashback). Generally speaking I like the Gigabyte B550I if you don't need a front USB-C connection for your case (it's very cost effective for the good quality and features), or if you do need front USB-C then MSI's B550 itx board (can't remember the long full name, there's only one anyway). MSI's board also have an optical audio out if that's part of your needs. I am not familiar with the ASUS Strix other than it's also very high quality but also high price tag (it's also the only board with USB Type-C Audio, which I don't know much about). ASRock's boards all left out BIOS Flashback implementation.

Anandtech's got a good article on the different B550 boards: https://www.anandtech.com/show/15850/the-amd-b550-motherboar…

                  • @zrmx: Yeah I'm leaning towards the Gigabyte one, I'm trying to cram everything into as small of a case as possible the cooling of the vram on the Gigabyte seems pretty good. Thanks for the article, been trying to find something that compare a bunch of them!

  • I think this is the same board as the last one you linked?

Just bought it the other day. Delivered in 2 days to within Sydney. It was $10 shipping so may not be cheaper in other states.

    • Great price! Yea it's the same MSI board in the OP.

      Thanks for sharing.

  • Just a PSA, the BIOS update for the Gigabyte Aorus B450i board is already out, typing this out on that exact board with a 5600x. No flashback feature, so you will need access to a Zen 2 chip or any PC store will do it for you for a small charge. I believe ASRock has updated theirs as well.
