I'm surprised this hasn't been OzBargain'd, it's a pretty good record starter pack especially for Jazz! Fingers crossed I get Getz/Gilberto in my 6.

If you guys need convincing, find the Spotify links to the nine albums below:

    1. Ella and Louis - Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstong
    2. Somethin' Else - Cannonball Adderley
    3. Go! - Dexter Gordon
    4. Speak No Evil - Wayne Shorter
    5. Monkey Jungle - Duke Ellington
    6. Moanin' - Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers
    7. New York Is Now - Ornette Coleman
    8. Getz/Gilberto - Stan Getz & João Gilberto
    9. Out to Lunch - Eric Dolphy

I'd love Getz/Gilberto, Ella and Louis, Somethin' Else and Moanin - but 4/6 from what seems to be more than 9 albums might be asking for too much!

      • +2

Somethin' Else and Moanin' would definitely make me giddy and the only one I'm not too fond about is the Eric Dolphy record. Let the chances be in our favour! :)

        • Yeah, the Eric Dolphy album is an 'avant-garde classic' but pretty hard to listen to even for me, and I like the Residents. I suspect a copy will be in each random collection but hey, it's still a good deal. Maybe can dress up in black, start drinking some bourbon and - when the bottle is about half empty - put the Dolphy album on to click your fingers to. Failing that yes, Happy Zavvi Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor. ;-)

  • This is a preorder, says sent 20th December.

  • Nice find, OP. If you're buying other things from Zavvi (to save on postage), remember to use MARSH10 for 10% off (doesn't work for preorders).

  • Doesn't it end up being $7.16 each? ($42.98 ÷ 6)

Not that big of a difference but idk if I'm just dumb and don't know how to use a calculator lol.

    • +1

Including shipping then yes you're right.

    • +1

I think they meant $6 ea before postage

      • Yeah I figured that, but realistically the actual price is $42.98. Or is there a Zavvi store that you're able to go into in Australia?

I don't think there's one in WA but haven't looked into it! They've had good deals in the past.

Confirms my view that vinyl buyers like the object more than the actual music. Buying random music? Whatever next?

    • Well yes. That is the point. If we didn't like the object we'd listen to it on Spotify.

    • +5

I see someone's not buying any advent calendars.

Hardly random if you're a jazz fan. Plus the review there - "titles advertised on display 6 are included in my Box… All are genuine Verve, Blue note or Impulse 180 gram releases of premium Jazz LP's" - is encouraging enough.

    • +4

All nine of the records pictured are excellent Jazz albums. I personally don't buy an album on vinyl unless I like the album from start to finish, so in a way I hold my vinyl to a higher standard of appreciation for 'the actual music' than say an album that I can pick and choose which tracks I listen to on Spotify.

  • Thanks OP

On a slightly unrelated note: has anyone found any decent deals on record players this BFCM weekend? Had to leave my old one behind when I moved, and everything vinyl-related looks wildly expensive in Australia

    • +1

I couldn't find any deals for record players because they've been inflated due to demand. I'm personally on the lookout for a LP120XBT and hoping for it to hit the sub $450-500 mark, but the LP60XBT is probably an okay choice for something decent-ish.

Best price I could find at the moment was at Better Music for $245 on pre-order and hope it comes around the same time as this deal.

    • If you don't care about bluetooth, https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07MVY92KZ is pretty good deal at around the $400 mark (currently $409.02 - I bought one when it was $390). Comes with a UK wall wart, but you can use an adapter on it. I have inherited a stack of 78 records, so it appealed to me. 12% cashback at the moment with cashrewards, so that would save $25 (max)….

      • Dang, only just saw your reply today: the 12% cashback combined with %10 zip pay would've made that a pretty solid deal!

Selection sounds good as per this reddit post - although that was american Zavvi and 10 LPs - still seems very worth it

  • Fingers crossed I get the Something/Ella/Duke/Art albums but yes, all seem good!

  • Forgot to buy this yesterday, now out of stock

  • Anyone’s arrived? Looks like they were posted from Bayswater last week.

    • ?? Mine shows coming from the UK… BURTONWOOD,WARRINGTON,GB

      But no status updates whatsoever…

      • +1

Sorry, mine wasn’t actually that one, it was another package

        • All good. I've sent an enquiry to them.

  • Mine haven't been posted - I suspect something went wrong in the system. I received the order confirmation and the PayPal authorisation but they never ended up charging my card. Order states 'Processing' and 'Waiting on stock' - but my friend who bought the set after I did had his order shipped out.

It's out of stock now, so doubt they'll be able to sort it out, likely looking at a refund, which is unfortunate given what a good deal this was!

    • They charged my card a few days before dispatch email. Send them a message.

      • +1

I did - they replied saying they're waiting on stock and they're dealing with shipping delays, still not quite sure what's happening because I placed the order within about half an hour of it going live - so would have thought it would have shipped. Hopefully it comes through!

I just received mine today. They are all great pressings. Got a Charlie Mingus thrown in instead of some of the others that were displayed.

    • Did yours come from the UK also?

      • Yes. From Burtonwood.

        • Damn, lucky duck! Mines just left from Egham, Surrey on the 22nd :(

    • I got almost the same, but scored Brubeck's "Time Out" rather than "Somethin Else". My old copy of Time Out has had a hard life so am pretty happy!

  • Just arrived. All I can say is… this may be one of the best deals ever.

    • What did you end up getting? :O

      • Same as MedicineShoes above

        • I finally got my order a moment ago! It's the same selections as yours and MedicineShoes… so not exactly a random assortment as advertised but the only one I was unhappy about is the Eric Dolphy record :)

  • Mine also says
Status: Awaiting Stock even though Est. delivery is 20/12/20

    • So mines gone from awaiting stock to ‘shipped, Huzzah! Didn’t expect that.

      • I must have ordered after you - my status has changed but only to "Order Placed"

        Est. delivery 1/01/21

      • w00t mine just got dispatched!

  • Just opened mine and got the same records as PlasticSpaceman (i.e. with Time Out included).

Was secretly hoping for Art Blakey, but pretty psyched with the collection nonetheless.

For what it’s worth, as suggested by the Reddit thread, they are all from the De Agostini Jazz At 33⅓ rpm collection.

  • +1

FWIW It's back on sale, but for $59.99 plus postage. I just got sent a 10% off code, so assume most people also got one, so that would make it a bit cheaper - although not as cheap as it was before…..

    • Worth a repost maybe, still a great deal

  • +1

I got my shipping notification on the 16/12/20, but it still hasn’t arrived. Tracking hasn’t moved from the first step “Allocate/Ready”. Coming from WARRINGTON, GB.

Anyone else still waiting/tracking not updated?

From what I have read Zavvi is often really slow so haven’t chased it up yet, but I suppose it’s now time I do.

  • Arrived today,

    Getz/Gilberto - Verve gatefold
GO - Dexter Gordon - Blue note
    Money Jungle -Ellington
Sketches of Spain - Miles Davis
    Out to lunch - Dolphy
    Ella and Louis

Not too shabby , very pleased, all decent pressings
