Aunty Donna's Big Ol House Of Fun

Now, normally I wouldn't bother discussing a bad tv show, however this is truly awful. I heard them interviewed on triple J and didn't find them funny, however people seem to rave about it. So, I was bored at home by myself, and put this show on.

Well, instant regret, followed by disappointment and disgust is what I got. Watched the absolute atrocity that was "everything's a drum". Thought, "perhaps this is just a bad bit, should still give it a go". So on we go to "looking for a roommate". Somewhere during this skit is where I yelled at the tv and turned this absolute garbage off.

The question here is, am I the moron? Or is this sort of repetitive, 8 year old humour actually funny? Is it somehow so highbrow that I simply don't get it?

    however this is truly awful

Just this makes me want to check it out.

This is better to encourage people to watch it than something like "tv show of the year". 😁

    • Just this makes me want to check it out.

See how long you get into it before yelling abuse at an inanimate object.

      • Looks very meh

        Doesn't do it for me. I couldn't get past 'everything's a drum'.

They are like the Wiggles after 9pm.

I binged the whole series & loved it. It's in the vein of Young Ones, Monty Python, etc - if you like absurd humour you'll enjoy this. If you don't you'll be just like OP.

    • I like Monty python and am not adverse to absurd humour. This, however, was like something from a kindergarten. Peepee, poopoo XD so randum.

It's also nowhere near absurd enough. Eg the classic "it's just a flesh wound", is a massive contrast to what's actually happening. Or Freddy got fingered, everything is so off the wall. This is not.

      • Time bandits is on SBS on demand I think.

Bang on. It's just stupid dumb stuff, but it's great. Huge fan of theirs for many years. They started out with YouTube sketches ~8 years ago, then created their own comedy shows, that's where they shine the most imo. They're incredibly creative guys and really go all out on stage with some of their musical performances, you can see the sweat flying if you're close enough!

Try the Pud vid for some of their best work. If this doesn't humour you then it's absolutely not for you.

The show doesn't translate quite as well, but I still very much enjoyed it. A lot of the fan favourite sketches from their live routine were re-enacted in the show with a few tweaks so that kept it fun for me. Wasn't a fan of the cameos, didn't think it served much purpose. But huge for some local Melbourne boys to make it to the big(ger) screen considering how small they started out, good on them.

If u don't find it funny, ur too old mate

  • Improv is a paradox. It is lazy comedy that tries too hard.

Skits are also a paradox. It is rehearsed spontaneous comedy.

I don't watch much of either because I get that shit live, to front row and in good quality after a few drinks.

  • I haven't watched it and don't plan to as I don't think it would be to my taste, but why does this warrant a thread here?

Why does a discussion warrant a thread on a discussion board?

On a TV forum, maybe. But why here?

I don't have an answer for your question by they way. I agree the show looks really unfunny, but so do a lot of things that pass for comedy.

If people are watching it, they must be finding something in it.

        • I'm not an a tv forum. This had an entertainment forum, this is meant to pass for entertainment. Plus I couldn't sleep last night so needed something to do.

  • This looks like the monthly OzB Random Questions…

The question here is, am I the moron?

    Yes

Or is this sort of repetitive, 8 year old humour actually funny?

    Depends on the demographic

And, the you spent more time here talking about it, junk food for the mind works.

    • Yes

Surprised it took someone this long to say this.

      • maybe people didn't read past the first paragraph or sentence :D

Like almost all absurdist humour, some of it lands and is really funny, other bits not so much.

I would also challenge anyone to find any form of comedy that appeals to everyone. Its way too subjective, so a post like this is redundant. The logic that 'I dont find this funny, therefore it must be shit'.

Except Mrs Browns Boys… that is terrible and if anyone likes it they are wrong. This is a hill I am willing to die on.

Look I thought "Filling Up on Cheese Before Dinner" was GREAT:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJk8UevZbIs

    • I really wanted to like it but I just got bored

  • I didn't mind the drum skit and thought I'd give it a chance but it just got unbearable. Made it past the Ellen skit in episode two and had to turn it off. Dreadful.

  • Loved this show

  • Was a mixed-bag for me. Loved some parts, other stuff just didn't land. That said I'll check them out if they do a season 2.
