What superior about this product as opposed to say, an $800 mobile phone that can also record 4k video?
This is a completely different beast vs a mobile phone. Plug it into your DLSR or cinema cam for monitoring/recording among other things….
Do you happen to know if it can record from any HDMI source such as an xbox?

Often a great DSLR cannot provide great raw files but have a HDMI out that can connect to a video recorder such as this, to provide that format.
