Same model that JB had for $499 last week, JB/HN/OW all now charging $699. Annoyingly OW is selling the 'Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5i' (identical specs but an 'i' after the 5) so they may try and mess you around if you try to pricematch.

All-time low price according to the Three Wise Camels.

Wirecutter's preferred Chromebook: https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-chromebook

Reviews point to good build quality, excellent keyboard and trackpad. Matte screen Also has USI pen compatibility.

IMHO this would be a great Chromebook for kids in Years 5-8.

the good ol 'different model but same baby car seat' trick

Picked up one of these from JB Hifi last week. Very happy with it, Chrome is lightning fast on it. Screen is glossy though, not matte as mentioned in the OP.

    • I've not much experience with touch screens, I did buy this laptop but haven't opened it yet. I hear some people use matte screen protectors on them. Unsure if this will help or look cheesy?

      • +1

I had an Acer windows laptop with touch screen that I installed a matte screen protector on. Keeps cleaner from less fingerprints,

less glare to use with brightly lit areas, and who cares what others think ( I thought it actually looked cool haha ).

Good enough for me, I'll get one 👍

  • As far as I can establish there is only one branding "Flex 5" , but in marketing material (only in a select few countries), they add the i to the end which maybe indicates its using an Intel processor? The display in JB has the 5i nameclature…..

BTW I'm just a LITTLE bit older than Year 5 :)

  • Is this good enough BYOD for year 7 in high school?

    • The school is the best place for advice on what they need.

    • Technically IDK why not, so long as all the the apps the school uses are supported, like office.
However my school says, NO CHROMEBOOKS.
I think it's just because the teachers don't want to deal with headaches related to dealing with more than just Windows.

      • Could just install windows on it, although 4gb of ram will be limiting for windows

        • does this support Windows for Chrome? You realise you can only install windows if you can first install a Windows compatible BIOS… then there's drivers..

  • this one or Surface pro 7 i3 for gaming?

    • +1

Which games? It doesn't run Windows, in case you weren't aware.

      • Ah ok i prefer Windows over other platform
mostly for emulators like MAME Dreamcast, Tecknoparrot

  • Is it able to sideload apk?

  • +1

bought one from Jb hi-fi recently, very solid, can't go wrong with the price:

good proc, good (touch) screen, very sold keyboard (backlit)

what I love is android apps, parent can control what can be installed (via app), no risk of viruses is big plus also

  • When I put in my shopping cart it says $688? Any idea why this would be (I have prime).

EDIT: Price now listed as $688.

  • Apart from school IT support saying no support to Chromebooks, 64 GB could be a problem for BYOD. General recommendation is atleast 128 GB (though that much isn't going to be used in high school).

    • +1

      can expand via microSD card

      • +1

You also get 100GB free for 12 months….

    • If it's a non-Govt school they can do as they please, if it's a govt school you can push back.

Decent price for fast chromebook with i3/FHD IPS panel/backlit keyboard with nice build, but only 4GB ram which is enough for most,

and Does have a cooling fan so slight noise when hot and/or pushed.

Could have grabbed this at JB HiFi for $424 few days ago when on sale for $499 then less $75 if using the gift cards.

I went for the HP 12b chromebook X360 with Pentium Silver 5000 and 8GB ram mainly for the smaller form factor as well as the

A3:2 screen ratio and the 8GB ram ( also has IPS screen and backlit keyboard ), although same weight as the larger 13" screen

Lenovo Flex 5. Was only $381.65 after using 15% off His/Hers

Coles gift card deal as that model was on sale being cleared out for the almost exact same model with only a slight CPU bump to

the Pentium 5030 ( actually scores lower on passmark score ).

In saying all that this deal for $499 for the Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5 is good for a nice fast slick medium sized Chromebook

with years of support as new model.

I was calling up all the JBHIFIs looking for this ; no one had stock. They also was saying this model was end of life. It was odd because that Chromebook looked a lot more impressive then all the other Chromebooks in the sub $500 range.

edit: looking at the jbhifi page now - I think it got replaced with a shitter model.

      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/hp-12b-ca0012tu-x360-12-h…

      UHD graphics 600 vs 605
      N4000 vs N5000 CPU
      4GB RAM vs 8GB

  • Looks like price is back down to $497 on the link, but dispatched within 2 - 5 weeks
