[Android, iOS] Prino (Price Tracking/History) Ad-Free if Installed by December 14 @ Google Play / Apple App Store

2220

Prino is a price history and comparison app that we built to help people make more informed buying decisions.
Download Prino by December 14, to get an ad-free experience for life!

Download for Android
Download for iOS

We'd love an ad-free Prino for everyone, all the time, but we need to recuperate some of our costs, so from December 15 we'll be switching on Ads for any new downloads.

What's new

  • Since our last post, we've been working on features that were prioritised based on feedback from the wonderful OzBargain community
  • We now ask you tell us about what categories you're interested in so that we can boost relevant products for you. (hopefully, a few less ladies dresses appearing at the top of the list ;-)
  • We've added the ability to filter by a price range
  • We've made some leaps and bounds with our push notifications to promote sales and deals that are relevant to you
  • Data quality is important to us. With millions of products and prices coming from heaps of different sources, we've got quite the challenge on our hands. We've been working on some back-office tools to help us better maintain our category, pricing data. Hopefully, this will surface to our users in the form of more accurate pricing and category information.

One of the coolest uses we've seen is a clever ozbargainer who uses Prino to get alerted when prices drop for products he's purchased, then claims them on a price protection insured 28 degrees credit card. Genius!!! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/577215

We're always interested in feedback from our loyal community of bargain hunters. Try out the app and let us know what you think.

What’s the difference between the paid Pro version earlier in the year and this one?

Also my Pro app doesn’t work anymore and forces me to install the standard version with no Pro features. Annoyed.

    • +1

Posted by the OP the previous deal:

If you're already one of our loyal Prino Pro supporters, then please download the consolidated version and remove the old one. The old Prino Pro will no longer be supported. Really sorry if this is a pain, but we’re certain it's the right move for us and hope you can stick with us through this hiccup.

      • Thanks GreenGuava!

      • Ok thanks GreenGuava. When I open the new app, there’s no way of knowing if it’s Pro or standard. How do I tell I’m still getting the Pro features?

        • Has old complaints of slow updates been fixed?

Do you crawl or rely on stores signing up with an API?

Price hipster emails are full of no longer existent deals and I've opened within a minute of them sending

          • @plague69: Hi @plague69. We still depend on the data the stores providing us in a timely manner. Some store have quite an unreliable data feed with wrong pricing. We have to rely on our users to report those issues to us so we can get back the the problematic store for a better quality data feed. We also invest on our back office tooling to allow us to fix up incorrect pricing as soon as possible.

        • Hi @Ebaygiftcards. We will soon release a minor fix for this so you could differentiate between pro and standard easily.

        • Hi @Ebaygiftcards. Have you tried the latest version 2.2.1? It's more obvious that you have pro-experience now. Please let us know if you run into any problem. Cheers.

    • Hi Ebaygiftscards, sorry to hear you're annoyed at us :(

We've consolidated the pro and non-pro apps into one. We can move a lot faster with regards to adding features and stores if we just maintain the one app and offer the Pro experience via in-app purchasing. Anyone who bought Prino Pro will continue to get the Prino Pro experience in the current, consolidated app forever.

Our last post explains the situation fairly well: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/574217

      • Ok. Thanks for your explanation. So if I delete the old Pro version, the consolidated app will automatically become the Pro version? Because when I open the new app, there’s no way of knowing if it’s Pro or not.

        • Download this app, login with your pro account. If you don’t see ads, you are pro user ;)

          • @mountains: @Prino Wouldn't this be easy for Devs to Add PRO to title or crown while removing the Ads to indicate it is PRO, there is no way of telling the difference apart from waiting for ad to appear? Also, what happens if you change phone after 15 Dec, and have to redownloaded it from your purchased app.

            • @naru6705: Good idea @naru6705. We'll consider doing it in the subsequent release. In order to keep your pro-experience for life, please sign in and it'll work even cross devices or re-installations.

              • @prino: I never had to sign into the Pro app. So I don’t see how signing in to this consolidated will give me Pro features.

                • @Ebaygiftcards: Hi @Ebaygiftcards. Downloading the consolidated app before this 15 December will give you pro-experience by automatically. However, in order for that pro-experience to stick around (in case of changing phone or re-installation), you'll need to sign in.

            • @naru6705: Hi @naru6705. We've implemented it as you suggested. Please try the latest release 2.2.1. Thanks.

  • +10

    Add Coles!

Would be awesome to compare sale prices of items not listed in the catalogue between the big 2.

    • +1

We are actively working on this. Will keep everyone posted :).

  • +4

is the ad free tied to our account or the download?

if I redownload after the 15th even though I downloaded it now will that give me the ad version?

    • +3

It's tied to your account. If you download and sign-in then you'll get ad-free for life on any device. If you have any issues, feel free to reach out to us on [email protected] and we'll help you as soon as we can.

  • +3

what is the purpose of registering an account vs using as guest?

    • Hi @ykwon, by registering an account you can set price alerts for your favourites. Using it a guest, you can only save your favourites and have to check it manually for price drops. Hope this answers your question.

  • +4

    Re-add Bunnings :P

    • It'll be tricky as Bunnings actively block our scan :(.

  • +11

We've made some leaps and bounds with our push notifications to promote sales and deals that are relevant to you

Can these be optional? I want notifications only for the items I have price alerts set for.

    • Developer would probably monetise this option one tier higher than the ad free option

      • I’ve only had one notification that was similar to above “shop now at Big W for bargains” or something to that affect. It felt like a paid ad.

        • +3

We would never do that @sween64. We would use push notifications for things that you are really interested in and opt in to receive. Just like what we've been doing so far.

          • @prino: Thanks for the reassurance. I guess I had a few Big W items tracked, probably PlayStation items.

            • @sween64: Hi @sween64. With version 2.2.1 you do have more control over push notifications on More screen. Please let us know if you have any question or concern. Cheers.

              • @prino: Email and Push Notification options are great thank you.

Can you have an auto dark mode that syncs with the iOS System Dark Mode? Microsoft’s To Do app is an example of an app that does it.

                Thanks.

    • +3

Thank you for your suggestion @sween64. 100% agree, we'll prioritise and get that feature out in the next couple of weeks. And please keep these valuable suggestion coming, we are here to listen 😉.

    • +1

Hi @sween64. We'll soon release a minor version that give you better control over email subscription and push notification. Stay tuned.

      • Thanks. Hopefully most, if not all, email subscriptions can be turned off. I'm happy with push notifications but I don't need emails too.

  • +2

Hi OP, the price drop alert feature, when are items checked and is this handled by the app/phone or via your servers

I triedto track price of a big W TV recently , deal went live sometime during day, but price drop alert only came through overnight/end of day (i think 1am?)

  • Please add more stores

    • We've added 6 more stores in the last 7 days :). There are more to come. Stay tuned ;).

  • +5

Possible to integrate with Amazon, too?

    • Deal breaker here

  • I had installed the app and head to account and signed in with my google account, it show sign in. But when I open the app and check the account will still showing no account!!
    What that should mean?

    • +1

Hi @TDSD, sorry that you run into this issue. Could you please shot us an email to [email protected]? I am certain that we can help to resolve it. Thank you.

      • I have solved the issue by complete the registration in Chrome.

        • Glad to know that you managed to work around the issue :)

  • +2

    This app is honestly awesome.
    BUT
    Few issues:
    - not enough stores (PLEASE add more)
    - % off is worked out on highest price and not most recent which means FIFA 17 is "95% off" or something but when you look at the pricing history it's just dropped from $3 to $2.50
    - Pricing info can be often outdated, not sure if this is fixable because pricehipster has the same problem

    • Hi @pennypincher98. Thank you for taking your time to give us some valuable feedback like these. We'll definitely continue to support more stores. Regarding % off, it's a tricky one as both options have some downsides, we'll think more about it. With out of date pricing, we rely a lots on the data given by some stores, hence not much we can do if that data is not available to us in a timely manner. Please let us know if there is any particular store that happens too frequently, we'll reach out to the store for a better resolution. Cheers.

      • +1

Regarding % off, it's a tricky one as both options have some downsides, we'll think more about it.

Could we have an option of each by any chance then? That's the main advantage pricehipster has is it will display "true" bargains at the top.

Please let us know if there is any particular store that happens too frequently

Amazon and Officeworks are two stores that immediately come to mind, although with Amazon it's understandable because prices always change and deals can sell out quickly.

Keep working on it, it's a great app with so much potential and I look forward to continuing to use it!

  • +3

Why does it have to be an app rather than a website?

    • To get price drop notifications?

    • +2

Hi @fredblogs. We found that our users are using smart phones more often than using computers. We want to turn this into something that you as an user can easily browse for good deals whenever you have some free time (before going to bed, in the morning, during lunch break…). We can also send you relevant push notifications so you can be informed of any price drop asap.

By the way, we also have a website which is available at https://prod.prino.io. However, please be aware that I haven't been maintaining the website for quite a while now to focus on the mobile app. If the demand on using the website instead of the mobile app increases, we'll priority to make the website better.

      Hope this answers your question.

    • Use price hipster if you want a website.

      • different data sets

  • Do we have to create an account to keep this ad-free experience? Or will the app just no longer update?

    • I haven't created an account and app has updated fine still being ad-free
Even changed devices and it still works all good

    • Hi there. Without signing in, you'll lose ad-free experience over re-installation of the all (app update is fine) or using different devices.

  • Thanks OP. Not sure if I missed it but can we set price alerts by product for all stores rather than having to set it up for each store for the same product?

    • Hi @orbz,

Notifications will only come through for products from the specific stores that favourite. You'll need to add it for each store. Definitely take that feedback on board - it would be easier to be able to favourite just the one.

  • No Coles and Kogan?

    • We are definitely working on these :).

  • Would love Bunnings in there!

    • Bunning was there and then it disappeared :(

      • Did it disappear around the time when that stock-level tool stopped working? (when they made it harder to access their API)

      • Bunnings made some changes that prevent us from getting the data. We'll keep an eye on it to see if there is any other option.

  • +1

I have saved quite a lot with this app already. Very responsive support team as well.

    • Hi @thriver. Thank you very much for sharing your "success" story :). Hope it inspires others to give the app a try and give us a chance of improving it.

  • +1

App looks great! As others have said, Coles/Bunnings would be good - I suspect Wesfarmers don't allow price scraping or something?

One suggestion that I do have - I was using a generic search term to look for items in a particular category, rather than a specific product, and (as was expected) a lot of irrelevant items came up. It would be great if these could be swiped away and added to a 'never show me this item again' list. Might be too resource heavy but it's something I would certainly use!

    • Your suggestion is well noted. We'll think more about it to come up with an efficient solution.

  • Have you guys done the categories across all stores yet.

    • Yes we did :). Have you tried out the latest version (2.2.0) yet.

  • also is there an unsubscribe alerts from my email so i don't have to go into the app and do it manually

    • Noted. We'll work on that soon.

  • Why isn't MCAS listed as a retailer!

    • Because you are the first one mentioned it :P

  • Been using this since the last deal, it's OK but I often end up back on pricehipster, especially for Bunnings. Any plans to add BCF? Also Supercheap captures the inflated RRP which means it doesn't catch price drops on "club price" sales from what I've seen? Assume other stores probably do the same.

    • Thanks for the feedback AngryAlfred! Companies with discount loyalty programs definitely make it a bit tricky to track the actual price. We'll think about how we might be able to solve that.

  • Just downloaded the app. Looks good so far. Immediate feedback: the design of the categories tab on the home page doesn't look like it can be swiped right. Also, would be nice if we can just set categories we want to see. As it is now, it defaults to ALL then BABY as the first two categories when all I really want to see is Electronics. Would be nice if we can save favorites by product/search as well so we don't have to favorite the same item across different stores.

Overall, looks good with just a few quality of life changes I hope to see someday.

    • +1

Thanks for the feedback! Great points on showing/hiding categories based on preferences, we'll look into it.

  • +1

Thank you, you guys are legends. Good and free software with no ads?!

  • +1

Hey guys, I like the app but I feel like you guys should disclose you guys use affiliate links as a source of revenue?

    • +1

Hi @okbianca. We had that feedback on our previous post (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/574217) as well and we made change to the app accordingly. You'll be presented with a disclosure message when you press "Go to store" from a product detail page if it is an affiliate link. Do you think it's sufficient enough?

      • +2

That's great. Thanks for always being transparent with us and open to customer feedback. You guys have put a lot of effort and work into this!

        • No worries at all. We are here to listen so please keep these constructive feedback coming :).

  • out of interest - how do you import all the price data? is it manual or you have some scripting?

    • Hi @nasesco72. We have affiliation with some stores while we have to collect data manually with some others. Ideally we want to be affiliation with as many as possible as that will give us access to reliable price data source.

  • are all those companies listed affilated with prino?

  • Auto light/dark with system settings

  • I’m just trying this out…can anyone tell me is there a way to isolate my search to a specific store? I like the idea of tracking for cash back, and I can search on model number etc, but my cash back is restricted to a lower price at the same store, so to have the ability to only search a specific store would be useful.
I realise I can go in and turn off all the stores except the one I am interested in, but that seems quite laborious to do each time. Or maybe I am missing something?

    • Hi @daybo. You can search within a particular store by press on the search bar and start typing the store you want (e.g Harve…), and select the store as it comes up in the search drawer. We know that it's something we can improve here as it's kind of hidden.

  • +1

Just wondering how this compares with price hipster?

  • Runs on startup. I'll pass.

    • Hi @Popo. We not doing any thing dodgy at all. It seems to be the default permission that the tool we are using ask for. We'll look into removing the unnecessary permissions as we go.
