If you're going to go through the expense of installing one I wouldn't get a 2.5kw beat to get 3.5kw min

    • Even for a bedroom?

      • for a master bedroom 3.5k is a good size if its a kids room 2.5 can do it.

        • +7

I’m confident 2.5 is plenty for most main bedrooms. 3.5 is overkill.

            @aja12: It depends on;

            How well insulated the room
            How much glass there is
            Whether it gets direct sunlight

Also, thanks to inverter tech units can run at less than 100% nowadays, which means a larger capacity unit will produce less noise than a small one while having more reserve capacity for those few 40c+ days each year.

We've got a 2.5kw for a 3x4m room. Really have to crank it when you have 3-4 people watching a plasma TV.

        • +1

Agree. 2.5kW kinda sucks for a small room.

I have a 3.5kW in the master bedroom and it cools very quickly.

Worth paying a bit extra for long term comfort/convenience IMO.

          • +5

@montorola: Definitely would be cheaper to run vs a weaker unit constantly on.

I would pay extra for a rever cycle aswell. Doesn't make sense paying hundreds to install a cooling only unit, considering these type of heaters are the most efficient vs other types

            • +1

@krisspy: Totally agree, reverse cycle is absolutely worth the extra! As per my comment below, our 2.5kw units work really well in a 3x4 (x3.4) room but again it may be down to the lightweight construction of the house itself. Not sure but they reach 24C/25C room temp without too much hassle then you can hear the external units pull right back to a light 'chug' and then lay low for quite a while before ramping back up to keep the room temp stable… but yeah, with prices so low on these units now maybe jumping up from 2.5kw to 3.2kw isn't a silly idea as long as it's only within a couple of hundred more.

        • +2

Don't need a reverse cycle with that plasma in the room.

3.5kW model is also available at $638 https://www.thegoodguyscommercial.com.au/hisense-c35kw-cooli….
Depends on the size of the room. 2.5 kW are good for a bedroom or study. Can't complain for a split system installed for around $1000.

      • Probably worth it if it also does heating

    • +3

Nah, 2.5 kw split Aircon is more than enough for a standard bedroom size. I have been using it since 2010 without any issue

    • +3

Yeah, I have to agree with others comments… I've installed a few 2.5kw Cooling/3.2kw Heating splitties and although I was a little worried about them being under-powered I was/have been very surprised at how extremely well and how fast they work. Room is about 3x4 with 3.4m high ceilings. The AC head is installed nice & high, 200mm from the ceiling. The first one worked SO well a year or two ago I just went for more of the same for the other rooms as they're all exactly the same size. Just brilliant… and like these inverter units just so cheap to purchase and run too. Mine are all just cheapie Kelvinators (Electrolux). Love them.

Maybe it's a house construction material thing? Ours is a very basic, very lightweight, single skinned, all timber & tin QLD workers cottage. No insulation anywhere but I've actually decided against it as we've had bad experiences with insulation in the past in similar houses. Sure, it knocks a few degrees off the maximums however it then takes longer to cool down in the evening due to the added thermal mass. I don't mind the extreme heat during the day just as long as I can enjoy a cool evening as quickly as possible. Lots more research to do on that topic though as I'm sure there's insulation suited better for timber workers cottages than the usual 'batt' type. Cellular foil, Air-cell type stuff I'm guessing.

For a bedroom, 2.5kW unit is sufficient.

If you must have arctic temperature on summer days though, I suppose 3.5kW is a minimum requirement.

How much does a ‘standard’ install job cost?

    • +1

      In my experience $500-$700

    • Standard back to back installation is around $500 to $550 in Perth

can anyone recommend someone in Sydney area? When we enquired, they were asking for $1000

        • +1

ive spent 2 weeks trying to find an installer on the central coast that

          a) didnt cost a fortune (avoid airtasker, they ask silly prices and hardly ever prove their licenced
          b) did install only jobs (so many just want to sell and install your system)
          c) actually available before the end of january

I found one guy who quoted $550 but he ghosted me, finally contacted bing lee (who I bought through) who linked me to their installers (not mentioned on their webpage you have to contact customer service), and that was $750ish.

Good guys do ground level installs for about the same amount from memory. Hope that helps

@perfectlydark: Yep, with the above points in mind it's no wonder more & more people are DIYing it these days. It's crazy hey! Ah well, they might get off their high-horses and figure it out one day… or not ;)

  • Sorry to be that guy, can anyone assist with a log in? Much appreciated

    • I can access TGG Commercial via my superfund and union rewards. You'll have to register for an account if you haven't already.

      • Ah bugger, my super (Austrlian Super) doesn't offer that, and not part of a union.

        • G'Day Rewards (Caravan Park) $50 for two years membership includes access. Might still be a half price deal on OzB for it.

@Food: Thanks for the heads up, the 50% off has expired unfortunately. Might be too much to ask, however could I transfer to someone and they purchase on my behalf?

  • id try to get one that does heating too, it's a heat pump so usually much more efficient than any other electricity based heating. often cheaper than gas too but that one depends on pricing

If you are in Victoria, by Feb 2021 VIC goverment has rebate scheme for reverse cycle aircon so maybe hold off for now.
