2kW Vertical Window Air Conditioner $499 + Free Shipping (With Coupon) @ Kogan

31
SANTA

This is perhaps the ONLY vertical window air con on the market since most other manufacturers discontinued them. If you have horizontally sliding windows and would like the energy efficiency of a window air con, this is a great option if you can't get a split installed.

These are far, FAR more energy efficient than portable units.

The price premium isn't too bad for the form factor at $499.

  • Marketing clowns, this unit is definitely not suitable for a room this size.

Great price, but unfortunately I have to downvote it (sorry), as there are just too many inaccuracies in the description first 6000BTU/h = 1.75kW.
Then power should be electrical power, not cooling power, given an assumed coefficient of performance of 2.5, this would mean a power of 700W, not 2-2.9kW.

As mentioned above, I'm not sure this will be able to cool a 20sqm room in the middle of summer.

If this was described correctly, I would upvote it.

It's very rare to see the actual power consumption of AC units anywhere but buried in the spec sheet. Most will advertise the cooling/heating output power. This is why there are so many threads littered over the internet asking how much power various AC units consume.

      • Definitely true, but this one explicitly lists it as power with a separate field that has heat (or cooling) in it.
So that to me is very misleading, potentially intentionally.

    • I know the specifications are not great, but seriously why do you need to shoot the messenger. I doubt that the average guy knows what all those figures mean, but you are also making assumption without knowing the exact facts. Besides there are not many choices of this sort of air conditioner in the market, do you get what I mean? Do you go about and critize every single deals that is not good or marginal. Give positive feedbacks and be generous. Dont be a whinger.

      • Do I down vote more than the average user? Most probably, but I also think that I up vote more than the average user.
It's just that there's no requirement to comment to up vote.

I work in energy efficiency, so I've got a good understanding what the figures mean.

Also, my vote has nothing to do with the price, or even the product itself, but the fact that the description is extremely inconsistent and likely intentionally misleading.
I even had a look through the 24 page user manual and even that didn't have the power draw listed.

  • will this work for a medium sized bedroom? do you guys think the noise levels would allow you to sleep with this on? my experience with portable units have burnt me :/

    • They are slightly quieter, but they still give a decent thump when the compressor kick in/out. The main difference is they are way more efficient than 1 hose portables, because they dont suck hot air into the room.

Looking at the instruction manual, the unit gets mounted on the inside of the window. It looks like a standard portable AC unit but instead of putting the exhaust pipe out the window, the whole unit is setup in the window.

I would expect it would be as noisy and efficient as a portable. Maybe a bit more efficient as you dont have the hot exhaust pipe inside.

1.75kW is pretty low comparing it to other portable units…. So not 100% sure. But if you look at the mounting instrcutions in the manual, the whole unit doesn't go past the window.

Portables are inefficient because they only have an exhaust for the hot air, where-as window and split units draw the air that gets heated from the outside as well.

This unit could well behave like a normal window unit, albeit with much reduced surface area 'outside' the building.

  • would like the energy efficiency of a window air con,

Efficient? Kogan does not even state the energy use or star rating, but these things normally have terrible efficiency compared to a modern split system.

    OK for occasional use.

  • A vibrating 25kg mass on the window rails is pushing it, no?

This should be much better than a portable unit since it will be using the outside air to cool the heat exchangers. Might need to do some sealing but good for renters

    Wanna see reviews before buying

  • One strength of standard window units over split ones is the ability to take in fresh air instead of just recirculating the air inside the room. Unfortunately this Kogan model doesn't seem to offer this?

  • My unit was built in 1960 with the sliding windows … not sure is the frame durable enough to hold the whole unit?
I am just worrying that may fall out of my unit and I have a huge bill to pay for the liability.
