Recently there was a lightning deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/589050) for the Hue 5m outdoor lightstrip for $200, easily the lowest it has been since whenever. If you missed it, it is back as a "Limited Deal" - it doesn't say for how long - for $222. However, prime members get an additional 10% off at checkout, which brings it down to $200, the same as the previous deal.

Similarly, the 2-pack Play Bar base kit is down to $152.44, less 10% for Prime gets it to $137.20, close to the all-time low of $122 at black friday last year, and the mid year $127 lightning sale which many of us missed out on.
The extension kit comes down to $68.60 in the same way, which is as low as it has been since BF last year.

If you are not a prime member though, Bunnings currently also has the 5m outdoor strip for $200. They additionally have the 2m outdoor strip for $119, which is cheaper than the 2m indoor strip. If you don't need the bluetooth capability of the new indoor lightstrip, nor will you need to cut or rejoin it, you might get lucky and find the v3 lightstrip for $79. My local Bunnings had a couple of the empty boxes on the shelf but no stock at the pickup desk, and I was nearly able to convince them to sell me a v4 version for the same price before they baulked and checked with their boss who kiboshed that deal (although did offer me $15 off the v4 shelf price of $134. No thanks.)

During the black Friday sales I purchased a hue smart bridge and 3 hue play lights (Total $320!) only to find that the hue stream app for android boxes does not work with any DRM enabled apps - hence it's useless for most video streaming apps, including youtube! Philips HUE is VERY overpriced and doesn't work as expected…. There is a solution - a Philips HUE HDMI sync box for an additional $499!… Ironically even when it does work I'd really need another few lights to be able to surround the TV… Way too expensive a solution..

I've ordered one of the Govee units to try - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JKVKZX8 - $125AUD shipped via amazon.com! I'd love to be able to return everything Philips HUE but I already disposed of the packaging (which it's near impossible to remove from without destroying!)

    • only to find that the hue stream app for android boxes does not work with any DRM enabled apps

Technically, that's not the fault of Philips. They have to be able to see the video stream outside of any apps, which is why it doesn't work when running the stream app on the same device as is streaming the DRM-protected video. Blame netflix et al for encoding their data this way. Like all these protection schemes it slows down the pirating a bit but doesn't stop it, so at the end of the day the only people that lose are legitimate users.

If you want to fiddle there is a Raspberry Pi solution that replicates the function of the sync box (search for the Harmonize project). I'm going to give this a whirl because even if it isn't totally successful I can still use the Pi for something else.

I'd be interested to hear how the Govee unit works out though. It uses a camera to capture what is on the screen and work out how to adapt its bias lighting to match. This makes it source-agnostic, but almost certainly not as accurate as reading the data stream directly.

The play lights will still be useful though. Currently I have them set up to use the Hue labs 'xmas scenes' formula and the missus loves how they integrate into all the rest of the lighting. That's what you pay for with Hue I guess - not having to mess around with a hundred different apps from each manufacturer (or trying to get them all talking together in hubitat/HA etc).

  • Can anyone give a feedback on the 5m lightstrip ? Is it possible to extend it ? Cheers

    • +1

I've just bought two of them from this deal, but from what I've read, no, it's not possible. Due to waterproofing, you'd need to cut the membrane.

      • If I don't need water proofing, cutting membrane is fine ? Just wondering.

  • I dont know. I've read there are more LEDS per inch in the outdoor versions than the indoor, which may mean it's a different construction/design. The joiner for the indoor version may not work for the outdoor version. [shrug]

  • Literally go to Bunnings, and lighting section - grab the ‘90% identical’ box which is

$69-79 for the 5m coloured version
$29 for the cool white or warm white

Comes with remote and all too works with Alexa

    • Keep in mind you still need the bridge for this to do anything.

    • What are people’s experiences with this device?

I would concede I’m not super tech savvy. I’m hoping to connect these to my Sony x9000h tv with my PS5 and eARC soundbar (JBL 9.1). I was hoping the lights dynamically change in sync with what’s playing on the tv (eg gaming, movies etc).

Any idea if this device can do that?

      • +1

u have to buy the sync box or connect to a computer to expand ur experience.

        • Or connect it to a Nvidia Shield TV

          • @YellowKnight: Which wouldn't sync the lights while playing PS5 (right?), but would still sync them with movies, videos and music played via nvidia shield.

            • -1

@pizzaguy: Correct. The bridge facilitates communication between lights and devices while the sync box reads the hdmi colour profile.

      • +1

nope, you need this…https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/philips-hue-play-hdmi-sync-box but imo it's wayyy too overpriced for what it does.
I've got the play bar lights(I got them for $127 last year..I believe it was black friday) and they work well as a side table lamps.
So this isn't a bad deal.

    • 10 bucks more than the last sale at 127.20 back in June. However considering after all the discounted giftcards and creating a new Amazon account, this will be cheaper.

      • The last sale was on prime day in October, same price.

    • are these good?

    • +2

FYI to use these properly and have the lights match what's playing on your TV, you also need a Hue Bridge (~$80) and a Hue Sync Box (~$500).

      • match what's playing on your TV

How do lights match what's playing? More importantly, why would I want them to?

        • I don't know how they do it, but they match the colours on the monitor/tv with the lights to create an ambience that extends the scene of whatevers on the screen. Have mate who has these set up with his pc and gaming wise, its kind of nice. Adds a little to the experience, whether it adds as much as the cost is debatable but each to their own.

        • It’s pretty immersive. There’s a PC app that does it for free that Philips publish, but you need whatever you are watching to go through the PC then.

I watched an action film 2 years back where I hit play on my TV’s box and a laptop that I left running elsewhere connected to the lights at the same time and the effect was pretty good. Depending on how aggressive you set the Hue response times though, it was a bit alarming when my dark room erupted in a sea of light when gun fire or something started out of nowhere in the film. Dialed the effect back a bit as it was a tad too much.

          • -1

@Smigit: You can also cast to your TV as long as the PC continues to display the video (so it can determine the colours).

            • @TogTogTogTog: Yep, that’ll also work. If you have hue bulbs it’s worth a go one day just to try it. I just used standard e27 bulbs when I did it, didn’t and don’t have any play bars.

        • +1

Seems like it would be very distracting trying to actually watch something. Silly gimmick imo. But, each to their own.

      • Free to sync if you can match what you see on and computer with the computer app. Works with ps4 through remote play but there are some restrictions I think because of copyright.

      • The sync box is $376.44 right now.
Still quite a lot for what it does though.

    • Bought this a few days ago, didn't realise I had to get the Hue Bridge for it to work, so ended up buying that too.

But once set up on my PC, pretty impressed with it, as it can sync to your music/games/videos or you can just use it as static mood lighting and control via computer's software or phone's app or even Google.
