            • @RubenM: Just a few examples of smart people who believe in it. Most of us won't consider them as irrational:

Sir Martin Rees - Astronomer Royal of Great Britain
Stephen Hawking – Theoretical physicist and cosmologist
David Deutsch – Physicist at the university of oxford

I think it's an exaggeration to say no rational people would believe in it.

            • @RubenM: It's ok if you believe no rational person can believe in it. However, we can go on and on with a list of smart people who will contradict you. You are entitled to your opinion.

“The remarkable fact is that the values of these numbers seem to have been very finely adjusted to make possible the development of life” - Stephen Hawking – Theoretical physicist and cosmologist

“Wherever physicists look, they see examples of fine tuning.” - Sir Martin Rees - Astronomer Royal of Great Britain

If anyone claims not to be surprised by the special features the universe has, he is hiding his head in the sand. These special features are surprising and unlikely." - David Deutsch – Physicist at the university of oxford

@gto21: good work spreading the gospel. if it reaches one, then it would've been all worthwhile

Religion only exists for two reasons:
      1) trying to explain the unknown.
      2) trying to cheat death.

      No different to science then…

      • +3

The first one, definitely, however the difference is that science asks you to question everything and does not say it has the answers.
Also interesting that less and less "god did it" things there are, the more science discovers how things really work.

Science (thermodynamics more specifically) shows that you can't cheat death. You might be able to delay it, but at the heat death of the universe, all life will be extinguished irrevocably forever.

        • at the heat death of the universe, all life will be extinguished irrevocably forever.

That's happening in our lifetime or the lifetime of people's great great (x100) grandchildren, is it?

          • +2

@payton: If you could cheat death, it would be happening in your lifetime, by definition!

While it won't happen for trillions of years (actually much longer than that), it will happen.

        • Science (thermodynamics more specifically) shows that you can't cheat death.

              Great if you're an electron!

We are all electrons, protons and neutrons… God's Lego blocks…

              • +2

@jv: So because we're all made up of quantum particles, humans adhere to quantum physics?

Yes, sure, why not! If you come from a standpoint of god being real, that's probably a reasonable assumption.

                • @RubenM:

Science and religion will eventually merge…

It just may take billions of years though before scientists are satisfied they know all the truth…

      • It won't merge unless religious people let go of their unscientific beliefs, at which point it stops being religion.

Also, the greater the island of knowledge, the greater the shore of wonder. I highly doubt that science will ever claim they know everything there is to know!

        • It won't merge unless religious people let go of their unscientific beliefs

There are many scientists that are very religious. I've worked with a few…

@jv: I'm yet to meet one that tries to justify their religious beliefs scientifically, they tend to wear two separate hats.

Not saying that scientists that try and muddle the two together don't exist, but I haven't met one.

@jv: I didn't know there was more than one employee at OzBargain Shitposting Headquarters

  • What I do is look for proof that Jesus is real. For instance, John Mellor Ministries has continuous miracle healings when prayed for in Jesus name. There are people that say he is just doing it for the money. But to me, it is part of my collection of proof. Yesterday I lost a folder with critical documents in it, so I prayed I would get it back before I went back to the shop. Have done this many times

    • like this? =D

Is there a daily usage limit? I could do with some new shoes.
Is cashback available? If JC uses ShopBack, I’m out.

      • its called blessings, and yes its available as free gift. I am a recipient

    • +1

Can you please post medically backed proof of any one single "miracle" ever in the course of human history? I will get on my hands and knees and repent immediately.

There is none, and John Mellor and the like are crooks and charlatans who make big dollars of selling suckers their books and associated crap.

      • he has freely available videos on you tube. or perhaps you should have gone to spec savers. youve been blinded by ignorance. You cant stand that we have evidence to prove Jesus is real lol

      • Jesus death and resurrection was a historically verified miraculous event, with credible historicity unparalleled by major events of the same area such as the Roman occupation of Judea, and moreover verified by secular scholars - but then I get the feeling that no amount of historicity will be adequate to satisfy your need for empiric evidence.

Generally people don't come to belief in Jesus because of miracles or empiric evidence. Jesus himself relays the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke chapter 16 when a recently deceased rich man ends up in Hell and asks Abraham to send the recently deceased Lazarus to warn his still living relatives (of the reality of Hell) - "'No, father Abraham,' he said. But if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent. He (Abraham) said to him (the Rich Man), 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'" - that is to say, the Bible has enough to say on the topic that if people make up their minds regarding it, then no amount of miraculous signs (including physical resurrection from the dead) will suffice to convince them otherwise.

Everyone will be accountable on Judgment Day for the lives they have lived on the Earth and as Christians we believe that we can't possibly hope to attain God's standards for holiness apart from trusting in the freely given sacrifice of God's son, Jesus Christ. Those who are honest with themselves realise they fall far short of God's perfect standard, and that my friend, is simultaneously the sobering reality and joyous hope that leads Christians to put their whole faith in Jesus.

What if God doesn't provide the healings? What if hypothetically you hadn't found your belongings? Would that detract from your faith? I ask with with no disrespect intended, as a Christian myself

      • But I have already seen He does, many many times.

        • +1

But what if He doesn't? I'm just trying to challenge you in your faith. In my experience, God doesn't always necessarily answer prayers and this can be for a whole number of reasons e.g. wrong timing, impure motives, personal growth opportunities and was curious as to how you would respond if this were to happen to you?

Reminds me of mandatory Catholic school curriculum. Pretty boring stuff. Do you get the physical discs for free?
