At these prices I think I'm willing to wait for the non-X version of the 5600 and the 5700X to eventually release to see their RRPs and hopefully avoid the early adopter tax

  • +7

Worst value CPU from the whole lineup. Wouldn't touch it with a 5800 foot pole

      • +2

You are comparing two non PCIe 4.0 CPUs with one that supports it. Not to mention that it's either neck and neck or outperforms them. If you want to argue productivity and cores none of these are worth considering for that given the price and performance of 5900x and even 3900x.

        • -5

People buying a 5600x are going for gaming only, and there is no practical benefit for pcie 4 in gaming, and trust me you will want want 8 cores for gaming with future games, maybe light streaming, etc. Buying a 5600x = no flexibility

And no one should be buying a 5600x for productivity imo

          • +1

@ln28909: A good system should last you 6-7 years with graphics cards upgrades. A non PCIe 4.0 will not give you the future proofing to do that. If you upgrade every 2-3 years then that's a bit of a waste anyway.

            • -2

@[Deactivated]: Exactly my point, a 6 cores cpu will not last you 6-7 years,

Also graphics card are not saturating the pcie slots by any means, I run dual 2080 ti on pcie 3 x8 and see minimal performance loss, and that's only half the bandwidth of a normal pcie 3 x16 slot

              • @ln28909: There still people using i5 3570k and 3770k CPUs. They came out in 2012/2013.

The issue is not the CPU but the motherboard and whether it will support future GPUs. To force upgrades (now that PCIe 4.0 is out) I'm sure the future GPUs will not be backward compatible with PCIe 3.0. give it three years.

                • -1

@[Deactivated]: Hahaha good luck playing cyberpunk with a 4 cores cpu, people that are on even an intel i7 7700k will struggle and pcie 3.0 is a big enough leap from 2.0 that it is not going to be an issue

Lol have seen the backlash of amd not planning to support b450 motherboard with ryzen 5000, and that was when amd user is like a minority, imagine nvidia releasing a pcie 4 exclusive cards, reddit will crash on that day

                  • @ln28909: Ummm that would be Intel that will do that. They need to sell motherboards. Have you not been paying attention to all the unnecessary chipsets over the years. How many of them were necessary?

                    • @[Deactivated]: I'm confused, was just referring to intel as they seems to have a lot of 4 cores cpu

If you want to complain, am4 mounting bracket is trash, I was benchmarking cpu waterblock and pretty much everytime, I pull the cpu out of the socket when removing the cooler, glad that no pins were bent

                      • @ln28909: I agree, the discussion is getting complex lol

Don't worry about who makes what. Ask yourself who has the market power to dictate. In the software side it's Microsoft. If the operating system doesn't support something then it's useless right? On the hardware side it's the motherboard chipset maker. If the the next motherboard will support only PCIe 4.0 and will take advantage by such and such then that restricts the GPU manufacturers. So AMD and NVIDIA despite being very important, they don't have as much market power to dictate what happens in terms of overall support and backward compatibility. That's what I was referring to.

                        • @[Deactivated]: It's a marketing suicide if they do that, particularly since amd and nvidia are considered pretty even rn, so if one side drop supportz the other will swoop in and become hero

Like yeah without fierce competition like in the windows space, the company have more leverage, but in the gpu space, there's no way someone will do that

Oh and doesn't make sense for motherboard manufacturer to make thatbchoice either, they are the bottom of the food chain

        • +3

why people care for pcie 4 ?

          • @Daffan: Future proofing. Current generation GPUs all support PCIE 4.0 and in two/three years they may not even support PCIE 3.0 to force upgrades.

          • @Daffan: currently there is not much gain for video cards but there could be in future, I think SSD's have quite a good gain on PCIE4 though?

            • @gfunk zero: far from it at the prices they command

              • +1

@abuch47: yep the only thing that really justifies the expense is when PS5 babbies tell you how fast their storage controller is

          • +4

            @Daffan: Clever marketing tactics

    • +2

Yep, but gotta keep those share prices (NASDAQ: AMD) going up by ripping of loyal "Team Red" enthusiasts…

My 2700x / GTX1080 setup is going to run long into the night with these overcooked prices.

      • The prices will come down once supply issues are sorted, its nice that we have choices and competition instead of one side holding all the market.. Maybe intel will gain popularity again and AMD will need to try harder

        • And there has been a lot of financial stimulus too around the world. One of the places that money finds it's way to is consumer goods. It has been a perfect storm for these AMD 5000 chips to be overpriced, but "should" ease off next year.

          • @buffalo bill: Not just that, but if you are stuck at home and have money to burn because you can't spend it on a holiday or at the bar, for a lot of people it goes into toys…

  • I already have a new Aorus X570 ultra board, is it worth buy this bundle and sell the Asrock Steel Legend board?

    • If you can get a 5800x for $699 delivered, I probably wouldn't bother, too much hassle, and taking on unnecessary risk

      • where can I get 5800x for $699? I've been looking for a 5800x for two weeks, seems like they jack up the price.

        • +1

Centrcom has them in stock with free delivery

  • The 5800X is pretty much in the same price/performance position as the 3800X.

Actually, it's even worse this year since the MSRP of 5xxx series CPU's are up by $50 USD compared to the 3xxx series release prices.

I'll probably try to get one if it hits $599 or lower, but at $699? No way.

I'm going to be waiting until 2022 for a graphics card anyways because of scalpers, so no point rushing to get a scalper priced CPU either.

Not to mention the terrible thermals on that Mobo. Good set of features though, so if you have good cooling with an air conditioned room, might be worth at $859.

    • My 5800x on auto oc peaks at 75 c on Cinebench r23 running slightly above 1.4v in average summer condition in sydney

      • +2

If you wanted to get a CPU with more cores you could have grabbed a 10850K for $100 less:

Which is functionally the same as the 10900K (Gamers Nexus)
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x2BYNimNOU

If all you cared about is single core performance, as many people have stated, 5600X is the way to go.

Again, the 5800X is at the same, or worse price position in this generation of CPU's compared to the 3800X. Sorry to break it to the neggers but that's pretty much fact. -Unless they drop the price from $699 of course.

        • Well not if you already spend $700 for motherboard and a monoblock, they are all overpriced regardless, the key is when to sell and upgrade to 5900x

Also why do people care so much about price to performance, me who watercool for aesthetic 😂

          • +2

@ln28909: If you have already smashed those dollars into the 5800X, just use it until it dies. Or if your goal is the 5900X, if you still have your receipt and warranty you could try to sell it off second hand.

I doubt people would buy it second hand close to RRP when there is plenty of stock around but if it is down to $599 or lower there may be buyers.

And next time wait for the benchmarks to come out before buying something worth $699.

            • @Outsider: I sold mine for $670 the other day, going back to 3950x as I couldn't live with lower cores count

And the utility of waiting for benchmark and not having a pc is lower to me than just buying it right away

You have to understand the used market is deeply irrational and overprice, I generally make a profit or breakeven when I sell used

For example, my pc costed me $6k but $2k is already paid off, by arbitraging the used gpu markets during the crash post announcement

              • @ln28909: ah yes gambling and scalping, good job.

                • @abuch47: I mean thanks to everyone saying that 3080 would be $800-$900, bought 6 2080 ti for average $800, wait till people realise 3080 don't exist, resell them for $1000, easy profit and no scalping necessary since still significantly below msrp 😉

              • +2

@ln28909: I nearly bought a 5800x yesterday but forced myself to hold off for a 5900x as I know in a year or so I will regret 8 cores. The waiting sucks.

  • I have recently purchased the MSI 3070 Trio and looking to build a PC around it (currently using it as an eGPU).

I was originally going to go with the 5600x with the MSI x570 which would total around $800… but it looks like i wont be able to get the 5600x for a while and because i have no self control - do you guys recommend going with this for $160 more?

The $160 isnt a huge concern for me - its more around would a 5800x paired with that mobo be much better than the combo I had in mind originally?

And while we are here.. I also bought the Thermaltake P3 case which is due to be delivered late december - can anyone recommend me a cooler to purchase that would fit in that case? Ideally i'd want an RGB one for the aesthetics.

Apologies for the nooby question - first time building a PC!

Mainly for gaming but also general workflow - I dont play hardcore titles but would like this build to last 3-5 years or so without significant upgrades - i mainly play games like valorant, world of warcraft, nothing too intense..

    Thanks in advance!

    • I don't think you'll see a significant gain from 5600x to 5800x with your current games, though if you want future proofing then I think it is better than the 5600x

6 to 8 cores cpu are not really motherboard critical, anything would be able to run it well, I like this motherboard due to the white accent and would suit a white build nicely, I previously had an x570 tomahawk and was building a white theme so didn't really like the look of it

Tdlr, comes down to aesthetic preference and how eagerly you want your pc, I've been told that 5600x shortage is gonna be for another couple of weeks at least

I've had an ASROCK Steel Legend mobo for about a year and I couldn't recommend it to anyone else.

It's been really unstable with 3.00 and 3.30 BIOS I've been getting random crashes with Machine Check Exceptions. Hopefully 3.50 will fix the issues but I still wouldn't recommend it.

I also initially had problems with booting it (with a 3300X) using 3600 MHz RAM. As soon as I enabled XMP it would fail to boot. The RAM was on the QVM list and they were fairly loose timings so I hadn't expected the issues. I had to again update the BIOS.

The southbridge also runs a little hot, the covering on the lower M2 slot seems to make it run hotter not cooler and my Clear CMOS jumper doesn't actually seem to do anything. (I have to pull the battery to reset it.

I'll be replacing mine in the near future.

    • Pretty much same thing on x570 Tomahawk, their ram controller is terrible, have to flash bios everytime I hit a failed ram oc

Best board I have so far is from gigabyte, both x570 aorus elite and aorus pro are nice to oc ram on

      • Ahhh thanks people for the help - I guess I'll hold out for a motherboard - I'm dealing recently with a laptop that just freezes and it is extremely frustrating especially when I'm working!

I'm definitely open to getting the 5800 but it looks like I can just wait a while for a better deal and get a mobo I want. Curious - I read good things about the tomahawk x570 and that was one I was looking at instead but it seems like there are similar issues.

Is there anyone you guys can recommend?

  • From mainboard website https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X570%20Steel%20Legend/index.as… Only BIOS 3.0 + will support 5000 sereis CPU..
And the mainboard have a default version of 2.60
The mainboard does not support bios flashback either

What am I supposed to do?

Just in case anyone else getting into same trouble

    • Damn, I didn't realise this board didn't have bios flashback, would not have posted this if I know.

You're only option is to update this with an older cpu, maybe shopping express can help you with that before posting it

      • I have contacted shopping express by email(they don't answer phone due to covid),see what they can offer..
I may have a try tonight to see if I can work around it.

        • @dzxr Please keep us posted.
Is this across all x570 boards or just the Asrock?

          • @sirs2k: I tried ,can't power up, I will update if I get anything from shopping express, I think just for this asrock mother board, I do see two other asrock x570 have bios flashback function so they don't have the problem.

            • @dzxr: Thanks for the update, it'd be good to know which other x570's have the flashback function?

        • Update
I rent a old AMD cpu in gumtree and upgraded the BIOS by myself
Shopping Express only asked serial number of motherboard and a few days after ask me to send back to refund.
I told them no need to return now and asked for credit, waiting for response now
