Kobo Clara HD eReader $164 + delivery @ Harvey Norman (Online Only)

90

Not as cheap as previous deals, but it's still better than nothing if you're in the market for one.

If you don't want to pay for shipping, it's $169 at JB Hifi. You could see if they're willing to price match - I managed to get them to price match the recent Booktopia deal (without shipping) when that was sold out, but YMMV.

It looks like it's past the date where they'll guarantee it arrives before Christmas so bear that in mind if you want it as a gift.

One of the main benefits of the Kobo over Kindle is the native Overdrive integration, so if your public library supports it (e.g. if you are a member of any SA public library) you can borrow books straight to device with no need to deal with the atrocity that is Adobe Digital Editions.

does the library thing work in Victoria?

    • +3

      It works very well.

I referred to this page and joined Eastern Regional Library for free as they have the biggest ebook catalogue.

I am actually under Moreland Library but their ebook catalogue is very small.

Just use the libby app on your phone or on your computer to browse and add books.

Depends on the library. Punch in your council here and see what comes up.

The only reason I mentioned the SA ones is because all the public libraries are in one network in SA and share resources, including the Overdrive catalogue, which is statewide there.

      • I tried putting in my suburb and a few surrounding ones in NSW and nothing unfortunately

They might use BorrowBox or another service, which will still work with the Kobo, you just have to use the Adobe Digital Editions software to download and transfer the eBook to the Kobo.

  • is Kobo better than Kindle?

      Personally, I think so.

The main benefit of the Kindle is the large Amazon collection you can buy from, but you can't borrow library books to it like you can with the Kindle. However, you can only easily buy books for the Kindle from Amazon. With the kobo you can buy form anyone who supports ePub (among others) which is basically the rest of the ebook industry.

The Kobo also is a bit more customisable (e.g. Very easy to add custom fonts).

Ultimately though it's another Android vs. IPhone stole issue. They both work well, just depends on which one works best for you.

      • Could you use "Calibre" with kindle to achieve the same results?

        • If breaking copy protection, absolutely.

          Bad form, though
