Any reason to buy if planning to buy a PS5 when they are available?

    • +1

      or a ps4/xbox one

      • +3

PS4 doesn’t play UHD. I’m sure you could pick up a One S for less than the above though

        • Yeah but then you have to use the Xbox controller to control it.

          • @Elyxar: Or get the media remote

          • @Elyxar: CEC enabled tvs allow your TV remote to control them just fine too.

    • Won't be running up unnecessary hours on your PS5 when watching discs is about all I can think of, perhaps quieter but that's a guess

Neither the PS5/Series X support Dolby Vision via blu-ray.

      • I have read this info on the ps5/Sonos community, I tried it myself and it works, if you own a ps5 and Sonos arc, and want Dolby atmos sound this is the setting.

While a Blu-ray is being played on the PS5 press the options button on the PS5 controller. Select the three dots. Select Dynamic range control - turn to Off. Also try Audio Format - from LPCM to Bitstream.

The PS5 cannot decode Dolby Atmos when playing back Blu-rays when LPCM is selected(it is the default), you will need to use Bitstream in the Blu-ray hidden menu like above to get Atmos. Also with Dynamic range set to auto (by default) it will act like “Night mode” similar to our Sonos systems.

While you are in there turn off noise reduction if you like all the fine details / film grain the movie producers added in.

I ask only users with PS5’s to try these settings. I do not own the x900 TV but a LG c9 with the full Arc surround set up. It is worth trying bitstream, see what it says in the Sonos app and how it sounds to your ears.

He said Dolby Vision not Atmos, good info though.

  • region free?

    • +1

All 4K disks are region free.

      • +2

        Good to know

      • is the player a region free bluray player? I assume no.

        • +1

Can confirm this. Collectors with Region A Blu-ray Criterion collection, for example. Those discs won't be played on this player. In fact, my understanding is no manufacturer offers region-free Blu-ray player (except the budget Laser and the now discontinued Oppo).
For Blu-ray region-free capability, you'll have to go through some electronic shops, which tend to charge some ridiculous amount to tweak the hardware of the player.

@motui302: This is what's holding me back buying all those criterion Blu-Rays

It’s worth noting that the before price isn’t especially relevant.
A few other stores (Bing Lee and HN) have this model on sale at $255.
Obviously this is still cheaper with free delivery. But pickup would be quicker than delivery for some people.

Even though its 2 years old. Seems to be the only model 4K Player Sony sell at the moment. Ignore the $429. Sony Australia sell this for $255 shipped.

  • Quality UHD/Blu-ray/DVD disc player, rubbish USB media player. Stick to NVIDIA shield pro for all your downloaded 4K goodness if your TV can’t do it already.

    • Why rubbish at usb?

  • Can't play much of anything. I figured it could play what it could on UHD or below, but I got a lot of incompatibility issues (movies, anime, and TV, your mileage may vary) and such. Maybe one can sideload Kodi or VLC but yeah, just stick with discs IMO.
