Fairly light use, considered getting a used bike on gumtree?

    • Don’t know much about bikes, other thing is finding matching time with seller to visit and inspect.

I am keeping an eye thought on FB marketplace and gumtree, good ones got grabbed real quick

If you're in Melbourne, apparently Samson are good for entry level bikes and quite affordable

  • on paths and road, or off road?
    flat bars or drops?

Go to Bicycles Online and search for Urban bikes starting at $699. They are great quality and purely online so you get bang for buck. I have one of their mountain bikes and they are great to deal with.

    • ^ this! Definitely great value for money at Bicycles Online

    • Hmm, I don't know why there has been so much of a push for Bicycles Online recently. Are you associated?

They may have improved their service recently (which is very surprising given Covid-19 and all), but my experience with them has been somewhat negative, where they sold me items that weren't in stock and they didn't tell me for two weeks (with no responses whatsoever whenever I chased them up - I seriously thought I got scammed…), and then they let me know that I had to wait 2 months for the stock to arrive (and this was two years ago, prior to Covid-19).

      • Not associated but have used them twice about a year ago and it was hassle free. Obviously my experience is just but it was timely delivery and well packaged. I had done a lot of research and found the value proposition hard to beat.

I think finding one will be a bigger problem than finding the best value one.

You may need to go with 2nd-hand, but determine firstly what you need. I wouldn't go with a 'mountain bike' unless you are off-track on a regular basis, particularly if you want to use for commute as well. Maybe a hybrid would be more comfortable to ride and cover all your uses, but only you can decide that.

    OzB fail. :D

    I recommend hybrid bike.
Hv you checked decathlon, hasa, trinx and polygon. These will be my first step.

  • I have 2 used Huffy mountain bike types I got for 90 AUD. Worked well when I used to go to office (1.4km to station).

  • Kawasaki ZX-6R

    • Got vfr800f already

      • Nice!

Try a Giant CRX. They are a commuter style (flat bar) with a decent frame and running gear. Some of the models start in your price range.

I've had a Giant Cross City for 10 years, abused the hell out of it, towed and hitched kids accessories - was 599 new in 2010

Still goes strong and I prefer it now over any road bike with uncomfortable geometry.

  • Have you considered an electric bike? Budget is on low end but it would make commutes much easier.

    • Looked into it, leitner bikes is the only option for that price range, there might be other alternatives which I am not aware of yet

      • +1

This one is around the range. https://www.99bikes.com.au/pedal-comet-st-black-orange

I'm not sure how much you're sacrificing since it's on the cheaper end. Some shops might let you borrow the bike for a day.

I've got colleagues who love ebikes after switching. Depends how long your commute is.

Lots of sales occur in the new year, as models often go by year.

    • 1 for decathalon, good value for money bikes. I've been riding a Triban 100 flat bar - works well for occasional recreational riding.

Gumtree's a bit of hit and miss - the appropriate sizes are hard to find, you'll end up settling for something larger or smaller than what you need. It's hard to judge comfort at a stranger's home.

    • Tribal 100, seems cheap $wise. You had any issues with maintenance?

    • what am i looking for in terms of fit?

  • I really want to get a bike to ride to work, but I'm terrified of some (profanity) with a chip on their shoulder swerving into me. The hatred I see for cyclists online is crazy.
    Is this an unreasonable fear?

    • Same goes with pedestrians vs cyclists vs motorists ( car vs motorbike vs trucks)

Act responsibly and enjoy your ride which ever you choose

don't do it if you would have to go onto a road, or a bike lane on a road. it's just not worth it. (it's ok if you have to cross some roads as long as there are proper crossings available and you always remember to dismount and walk across.) australia just isn't set up for commuter cycling unfortunately.

  • Anyone consider Reid bicycles a good deal anymore?

I’ve got a Giant Cypress hybrid bike which I use in a similar way to what the OP is looking to do. Very comfortable bike and easy to ride. Fits the budget requirements. Solid, reliable gears and brakes. The only downside is that it is a bit heavy but I guess that’s what you put up with at the cheaper end of the market.

  • Just go to Kmart.

    • Just no! Best way to be put off cycling very quickly would be to trying to use a Kmart bike as a commuter, cheap but heavy with poor quality components. Usually chromed cranks, handle bars and rims, that will all rust in a short time.

I did a ton of research last year with the same budget, asked all the bike crazy people I know.

Long story short, the overwhelming recommendation was to get a Rock Hopper by Specialized. It's a hybrid with a decent lean towards off road, RRP $799. Great purchase, never been happier. No need to go second hand.

Fuji make some great bargain bikes - I have a Fuji Nevada 1.7 mountain bike which I've since converted to be electric (courtesy of Dillenger) and it ticks all the boxes for me. Think I paid $750 or so.

Here's a bunch of options from various bike shops around Australia:
