  • anyone have this? How is it? Worth the $75? Can you record TV with this?

    • +4

Was worth it until Google's own product came out. Now not worth the small saving.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/chromecast-with-google-…

      • well, I thought the same but after using chromecast with google tv realized it only does 4k 30fps and that too a bit jittery. to get 60fps you are stuck with 1080p. kinda disappointed with it tbh..

        • Huh?
I was not aware of that, but not sure how it is a problem either. This device is for movies/tv which are at 24-30 fps.

Why do you want 4k 60 fps for media?

          • @bargaino: actually scratch that. the 4k 60hz option showed up after changing the hdmi 2.0 input to enhanced format in the tv settings. it still lags pretty bad in the ui though.

      • +3

second that, chromecast with Google TV is better IMO, 4k - 60 HZ. Plus future proof with Android Tv updates

        • -1

          Future proof with Google?

They are the first to dump you at a moment’s hesitation. I refuse to buy Android phones for that reason, after a couple of years or so you are in your own.

          • @Grok: My son's Pixel 2 XL was upgraded to Android 11 just days ago.

            That's not a moment's hesitation, that's a 3 year old phone.

      • This runs a vanilla version of Android TV so no bloat unlike a firestick or the new offering from Google.

I have owned and enjoyed using the previous version (MiBox 3) for a number of years now.

Worth getting a USB ethernet adaptor if you want stable streaming in my opinion too.

I’ve owned the pre S version. Pretty good for the price imo, though I did buy used for about $30 delivered.

I’ve used one of these for the past year or so, it was really good value until the new Chromecast with Google TV came out.

I just upgraded last week and it’s so much better, even the picture quality is noticeably better. I wouldn’t bother with the Mi box anymore.

We have it - paid just under $100 from Banggood or some other grey market seller.

      Some thoughts:
      * Had some freeze on sleep issues - sorted about 6 months ago with an OTA update, which are regular.
      * Has Optical out - so if you have an audio system, you can use it for music streaming via Cast. Airplay works on Spotify Android via the Hify app
      * USB port so can play from portable sticks or USB HDDs
      * All FTA apps work
      * Netflix and other video streaming are full definition
      * Android 9 coming or has arrived

      • I get regular 'spinning wheel" if you pause a local playback too many times (playing from a usb drive) …tried Sleepy Watchdog but that didn't fix it…not sure what the issue is.

    • I own the MiTV stick and find it a great little unit which runs on Android 9 with 1GB DDR3.
MiBox runs on Android 8 with 2Gb DDR3 plus you have extra USB port. I love this device and have in-build chromecast. Remote works pretty good. I bought MiTV stick for $50. I wouldn’t mind paying For extra $25 for 1GB Ram and USB port.

    • I have it for 2 years almost, is not obviously the best android TV device but I haven't got any issues at all, it runs really smooth with any app, even when Amazon prime was not available for Android Tv I managed to get an .apk and I didn't show any lag or similar. I consider it is a great value and I feel more comfortable using its Bluetooth remote which is also faster than the PS4 remote, I have 19 streaming apps 6 paid 1for IPTV even a VPN and I have no complaints besides the USB port is obsolete.

  • Too bad it is not the Android TV 9.0 version

    • +1

It is. Update was pushed months ago even on the old 2016 version. The chromecast tv is still better value

      • Yep can confirm, I have upgraded my older MiBox 3 to Android 9.

        • The update for me to Android 9 on the MiBox 3 was painful as I originally lost function of my ethernet adaptor, soon found one from Jay Car that did the trick.

  • Anyone know if you can install a VPN on this e.g. Nordvpn?
Would make it a good option over chromecast for those that don't want VPN installed on their router if so.
I don't think you can install VPN direct on chromecast?

    • I have expressvpn installed on mine.

    • Just tested Nord. Works fine. Netflix thought I was in Canada.

    • You can install on this and the chromcast Google tv

    • Yes you can install VPN either from Playstore or sending .apk file to MiTV Box

  • Does it come with the Chinese App Garden preinstalled?

    • It depends what Region you select at the initial setup process.

      • Can someone confirm?

I have 4 of these, one on every TV in the house.
Used for playing Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Youtube, and Kodi.
Not had any issues with any of them. They just work.
$75 is a decent deal, most of mine I bought for abour $85. 2 From Tobys Deals, and 2 from Kogan.

    • Same - on 2 of my Teles. They work great, no issues. Just had to sideload Disney+ but other than that, works great!

I was all set to buy the new Google TV instead of another Mibox but after reading that it doesn't have AFR (auto-framerate matching) nor a regular USB port, that broke the deal for me.

As for the Mibox, I've had the older version for a few years and it's served me really well. Really want to get a second Android TV box with better specs but it seems the closest to that which have the features missing from the Google TV is the Shield, which is pretty expensive.

So your choices are the Mibox (lower specs, but with AFR and a USB port to attach an external drive), the Shield (more expensive, but full of features, some you may not even use), or Google TV (no AFR, USB port).

As yet another owner of two of the non-S models, I'd wholeheartedly agree. For us, the MiBOX isn't perfect, but it IS what we use everyday, and aside from rebooting our main MiBox every night before we use it, it suits our needs. I bought my first one at a Walmart in the US around 2015 or 2016 when I was on a work trip, and the second one a year or so later - so we've upgraded from the original Android 6 through to Android 9.

Both of mine have a UGreen USB3 hub with ethernet plugged in ($30) as I like the stability of ethernet, although wireless on our Unify is probably sufficient now (it wasn't a few years ago).

If you don't have a rock solid WiFi network then I'd definitely follow the same path as me.

If I was buying today, I'd probably lean towards the Google TV for better OS stability and long term support, for us the Shield is just too expensive, and the MiBoxes work OK.

      • Why do you have to reset yours daily?

We used to only have to reset ours once in a blue moon for various issues, but lately it's been daily because videos just stop playing. YouTube, Kayo, pretty much ever app it just plays the sound but the screen is black. A reset fixes it but it's pretty annoying..

  • I don't know about this new version but my non S older box does not allow me to transfer/delete files on the usb stick attached to the usb port of this device via network from my PC direct. So annoying and 'backward' technology imo.

    • I have the non S too and I delete files from a USB stick I have connected to the unit via a hub all the time in KODI or a file manager.

There is a setting you have to flip in KODI.

Via a network may involve other permissions, so that may not work.

  • does this come with an AU power supply or just a travel adapter ?
