Oh man, just watched some tech reviewers videos, and then talking about how expensive the 500$ rep was. The australia tax really adds up ;)

    • +3

      with Apple tax included.

    • US RRP is $549 and don't forget to add sales tax too . Not to mention we have excellent consumer laws and protection in Australia in case you buy a lemon - it's all built into the price

    • +2

AUD$723 plus gst = AUD$793 if bought from US

I am interested in Apple products. Love the iPad and watch. OK with the expensive phone even. Not so keen on the $1699 Mac Pro monitor stand, or an $800 pair of earbuds :-)

…. unless they do real-time translation like a Babel fish?

    • Understand. I am tossed up about it, hence trawling for ways to pay less, this is the lowest I can find :-)

      • +13

still overpriced for just a pair of headphones

at this price, I rather get a next gen game console or gpu

        • How is that even a comparison lol?

          • @ln28909: All costs the same 😎

Who spends $800 on headphones? Surely nobody can have hearing so precise

            • @LukeOz83: $800 gets you the best possible console experience

$800 is nothing in the headphones space

So yeah definitely not a good comparison there

It is not about "hearing so precise". It is all about being one of the few people to be seen walking around with it.

    "Don't be an Apple"

meaning: Don't be a d head who buys over priced items just for the brand name, 99.9% would be more then happy with bose 35ii/700/sony xm4 headphones for half the price with little difference

Apple AirPods Max vs. Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 vs. Sony WH-1000XM4

    • The relative difference between them are large, yes, but the magnitude of this difference to the target market of this product is negligible

      • +4

Apple could fart in a jar & label it as "Corona virus free air" charge $999 it would sell out overnight to their "target market", credit it to them how powerful their brand has become, but year after year their price points don't make much sense anymore, guess they are pushing their peak as far as they can

        • +1

looks like you don't fit into the target market so that's why you don't understand which is fair enough

I assume you're not someone that would consider buying a pair of sock for a $100 because that is what a large proportion of their target market does

          • @ln28909: you're assuming they target the high end, they have a unique huge following, rarely discount products, add "buy now pay later" even the broke apple faithful will pay up for these, not saying apple products are shit but their price points are becoming a bit of a joke for little difference & soon will only be a high end buyers product

ps: this is my type of target market for socks

          • @ln28909: bad comparison, i hate apple as much as the next guy but apple's target market reaches further than those that purchase luxury goods
i know many "reasonable" people in my life that owns iphones and airpods

            • @bakemon0: There are two distinct categories in the apple target market, those that will buy the product right on launch and those that would wait for a discount

Since they are 'reasonable' people, they most likely to fall into the 2nd categories

    • lol why does it matter what people choose to buy? and why a d head for buying apple headphones?

yes, I know they're expensive compared to competitors, but some people have money to splurge and are willing to pay more for the design/build or whatever interests them

      • -2

if we go by why does it matter what people buy then ozbargain should just start regularly posting items at 5% off rrp cause someone is always happy to pay that, hey splurge on what you want end of the day design, build it's all made in china for under $100 if you're happy to pay 800% market up sorry but theirs a price point where it becomes a bit of a d head look at me product, if these were priced at $899 but you knew it the future it would drop to $500, like other companies do fair enough, but won't be seeing that from apple unless the product is a complete flop at current rrp

        • +2

ozbargain should just start regularly posting items at 5% off rrp cause someone is always happy to pay that

difference is that apple products are rarely on sale, so 5-10% off launch is a decent deal…..

it's all made in china for under $100 if you're happy to pay 800% market up but theirs a price point where it becomes a bit of a d head look at me product

          1. cost is not just based on manufacturing, other stuff like shipping, after sales etc. Apples net profit margin for 2019 is around 21%, which is actually quite reasonable. Stores get this for less obviously, and Macs at 10% off is basically cost price.
          2. how are you gonna say that to all those wearing designer drip (lv, Gucci, Dior)… clothes that "cost" $50 to make, markup 2000%
          3. there's no need to judge people thinking they're d heads just because they own AirPods Max lmao. owning AirPods Max does not define someone's personality

if these were priced at $899 but you knew it the future it would drop to $500

I feel like its good they retain their value until the next gen release. take a look at xm4, already dropped from rrp $550 to average market price $350 in 4 months… imagine you paid $450 thinking it was a good deal, now its $100 less.. plus if you wanted to resell the AirPods Max for the newer gen, it'll still be worth a decent amount and you can get most of your money back. used xm4 are now asking for less than $300 on fb marketplace..

          • @skido: Hey we can go back n forth all night, won’t change my mind I’ll stick with this is a overpriced product, you can stick with 5% off Apple rrp is a good deal, only reason Apple products get away with this pricing is its cult following status & as said credit to them if you can get away with it do it, but if this exact same product was released as Sony or Bose branded would probably get 50+ negs & won’t be seen again until it’s heavily discounted, power is in apples brand not the product in this case, as for price drop on xm4 ozbargainers are pretty cluey & most were waiting it out for the price to drop, as for point 3 don’t get to offended check your Prada bag for a tissue lol

            • +3

@RogueWolf: im not trying to change your mind. I think these are expensive and I said that 5-10% off for a newly launched Apple product is a decent deal. My original point is that, just let people buy what they want and no need to judge others for how they choose to spend their money or what headphones they decide to use. but you do you

              good night

  • +1

Are they really twice as good as the Sony X4's?

      • The worst comparison I've ever read

      • +2

Yes because the BMW is a high-yield investment compared to the WRX.

        • Lol, there's a callback

  • Yeah nah

  • Are people, especially our OzB friends actually buying these?

  • Here for the Appleism queue.

  • +2

Tried these in store today - the build quality and feel is ridiculously good. Makes the Sony and Bose stuff feel positively dinky in comparison. Very solid and the control button/dial have very little give to them; in comparison to my XM3's, it feels like a Leica camera next to a cheap plastic point & shoot.

Also felt much more comfortable than my XM3's (admittedly, I didn't try them for very long).

No way I'd buy these at anything close to $900 though, I absolutely can't justify 2.5x the price of XM4's for something that's functionally very similar and just feels nicer. Maybe I'd bite at $550. Let's hope we get some sales similar to on the AirPods Pro.

These discounts and posts are a wakeup call to anyone who is on the fence to jump and buy premium headphones.
Due to this sick pricing by Apple, other manufacturers will also have to bump up their prices to compete on price premium factor.
Apple did this nuisance in phones(now all top end phones are exorbitant in pricing just to match Apple’s obscene pricing profits), same will happen to headphones market too.
Therefore if you were planning high quality premium headphones, now is the time to jump and buy before other true premium manufacturers(Sony,Bose) start bumping to $1000 just to match Apple’s pricing.

    • I'll stop using headphones in that case. You can have mine.

      • Do you do post? /s

        • I mean you can buy the one I would have because I won't be going near them at this price.

  • Lol

  • Imagine the prices of technology goods if there was no pandemic.

Apple CEO: "We will have to lower our expectations and drop the prices of our phones, computers and accessories by 150 percent as a result of the pandemic. The Airpods Max will be hit hardest and will need to be reduced from $7000 to $1000. This hurts even more given China's recent economic stance. The headphones normally cost us $10 to manufacture but now it will cost $11 without access to the uyghur labour."

  • And what advantage does this have over a train which I also could afford.
