          Straw man argument. Please show me where JK has said "post menopausal women are not women".

          Really hate how people deliberately misrepresent the arguments of others.

            @Lurk Hartog: She says women = people who menstruate. I don't, therefore I'm not a woman. Neither do post menopausal women.

              @Miss B: For ease of reference, this is the tweet Rowling made about this: https://twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/1269382518362509313?la…

              ‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?

              Given that, it's really not fair to infer that what she's saying can be boiled down to "Women = People who menstruate". Most of all because using "=" does change the nature of the statement. The equals sign means that both sides of the equals sign are the same, and that's not her intent here. What she says can be boiled down to "People who menstruate are women".

              That might sound like a trivial difference, but when people say "X are Y", what is usually meant and inferred is that "X is a subset of Y", or that "X is entirely a subset of Y". E.g. if you say "Dogs are animals", no one would think that you're saying animals = dogs. However, this is precisely the mistake that you have made. You've changed it from "People who menstruate are women" to "women = people who menstruate", which is different to the original claim.

              To say that "people who menstruate are a subset of women" is obviously still a controversial statement as it includes FTM "gender non-binary persons" (which I understand is the crux of the Rowling controversy). However what you're arguing against is not a claim that she has made, so what you are doing does technically fit the bill of a straw man argument.

                @Setiawan: Thankyou. You explained that far better than I could have.

                @Setiawan: crickets

                Don't expect a reply, your correct take doesn't allow people to be victims.

    This is a wonderful book for kids and adults alike (if you’re an adult who likes a young person’s book). A clever tale of ethical and moral conundrums. Ignore the twitterati and naysayers. Rowling is a progressive, inclusive author who supports the rights of all, including trans people’s rights.
    At this price, the book is a bargain.
