Instagram‘s new terms of service are not sketchy at all! The terms of use that came out December 20, 2020 involve many invasions of privacy. All of which are necessary for your protection. Don’t think Instagram should be able to read all your text messages? Then how else do you expect to look at pictures on Instagram? Instagram and Facebook will be watching you from your own phone with their new terms of service. Enjoy!

well, if anyone think putting your real photo on internet is a good idea on the first place, then i have no other comment……

    • +2

Facebook will disable your account a short time after creation and demand you upload a photo and give your mobile number. Handy to have for MarketPlace..

      • That’s what happened to me. I made an account a couple years ago for a stupid work requirement and it got suspended within a month because I wouldn’t upload a photo of myself. I tried using a photo of a work colleague (with their permission) and Facebook knew it wasn’t a photo of me.

        • +2

after so many deletions, i found a way. there's a program called Fawkes that alters the image so that Facebook won't be able to pickup that you uploaded a stock photo.

haven't found a solution for the mobile number

      • ? I took off mine and husbands mobile number off Facebook as I realised when anyone types your number in the search bar it links to your profile. Never been forced to enter it in after?

        • once you give it, you get recommendations based on your number. i'm not sure about ads, but it may work similar to your address where a business will upload a email list of their customers and are able to target ads to them if there's a matching email.

          • +2

@follow: Tbh I know I should be all up in arms about privacy but I really don't mind ad targeting, I actually prefer it. I rather view ads for items I might be interested in (and look up a better price on my own) than repeatedly getting ads for 'single women in the area waiting for you' for example haha.

  • +4

But muh convenience and muh likes.

  • +6

    Then don't use it.
What do you expect from a free service? You're literally the product.

    • +1

      If only that were enough.

Have roommates or family sharing a local network? FB's products will snitch back to the mothership all the devices in view. I know how to isolate my devices but not everyone is in a position where they have the technical knowledge or the physical access to do so.

Do your friends and family have your personal phone number in the contacts list which they give every app on their phone access to? Guess which company knows about that association between the name and phone number…

Does your family like to take photos of you in family gatherings and upload to Facebook? Most people don't know how to scrub EXIF data and Facebook will use facial recognition to know that you were at that exact location at a particular time.

The reality is that it's basically impossible to opt out as long as you have peers who just don't give a damn. Even if you don't have a Facebook or Instagram account, Facebook keeps shadow profiles of everyone.

  • I've got it on my phone, but have always "denied" the Contacts, Microphone and Telephone permissions on my phone.

That leaves Camera, Location and Storage - which isn't much better because those three things alone encompass a lot, particularly the Storage. But that would be the minimum for a photo sharing app and I'm "comfortable" with that. (I've got the more sensitive pictures locked away! haha!)

The alternative would be to remove the whole app.

      use the website instead

  • Most social media terms of service since forever, 'just wow'.

  • +3

The thing that gets to me most if how targeted and specific their advertising is.

On Christmas Day I tried one of my cousin in laws White claw drinks as I’d never had one before and had heard the hype around them. Without googling white claw or posting any photo or message about them I was getting Instagram ads for other Selzter drinks within 6 hours (selzter is the type of beverage white claw is classified as.)

    • +1

Exact same thing happened with me about 2 months ago - discussed apparent new 'hard seltzer' fad, ads on socials within about an hour.

    • +4

It's a fun game with the drinks - everybody opens up instagram (or facebook) on their phones and everybody has to talk about a subject they don't usually talk about.
Just talk nonsense about it. Something like "jet skis". Just talk rubbish like: I like jetskis, I want a jet ski, my friend has a jet ski, I heard jet skis are good fun, my friend bought a jet ski for cheap etc. etc.
After a few minutes start scrolling and the first one to get a jet ski ad has to skull the drink. Or the person to their left etc make you own rules!

It's mad fun and blows everyone's minds.

    • selzter is popular now, and the new in brand.

you prob fit the target demo. got to chill.

      This just doesn't happen.

Your phone is not listening in on your conversations to "advertise to you later".

There are a million triggers being processed about you and you are associating correlation with causation. Maybe your family member googled the product a few times before seeing you, and Google sees that you're close together physically now and thinks maybe you're the target demographic, for example.

Aside from the fact that listening in constantly would kill your battery life, Google has stated officially multiple times that they are only listening for the 'wake word' (ok Google) and not processing random conversations for advertisements. Imagine the lawsuits that would happen if this were to be true, and the reputation damage to google as a result.

It's a nice conspiracy theory to think that they are doing this but it's just false.

      • but it's just false.

        Are you positive about that?

In 2019, 1000 Google Assistant-harvested voice recordings were leaked to Belgium media outlet VRT News. The recordings—-many of which will have been collected from Android phones—-included enough information to identify the device owners." In these recordings we could clearly hear addresses and other sensitive information. This made it easy for us to find the people involved and confront them with the audio recordings.

        • +1

That was just a series of unrelated isolated incidents, citizen.
Now go back to using your phone and stop questioning your tech overlords, you wouldn’t want people to think you’re a conspiracy theorist, would you?

        • +1

You're talking different products. Yes, voice assistants keep recordings to be able to analyse and improve the voice recognition algorithms. I'm surprised anyone is surprised a device designed to listen to you… Listens to you?
As far as I am aware - and I'm very happy to be proven wrong with actual evidence - Facebook, Instagram et al DO NOT use voice recordings to mine for data for advertising purposes.
Mining Big data (which is what is actually happening with your socials) can do some seemingly 'magic' stuff without explicitly/directly being given the information.

      • +1

Previously watched a few documentaries & videos on this topic.
And yes most people think that they are being listened too & recorded, but it apparently just seems this way because the algorithm is so advanced.
Yes it can predicts extremely well, so well that people thinks it can only be if they are being listened to live.

  • I'm actually working on getting rid of my instagram. I want to download the stories and posts archive before I do it. Is that possible?

    • You can download all your data by going to settings -> security -> download data but it doesn't really come out nice and organised so it might take a bit of time to sort it all.

      • the stories too?

        • iirc it downloads all the data that you've submitted to instagram so it should include stories but also has dms in json format and other bits like that.

      • Ugh… It's such a mess, everything is just shoved into folders willy nilly, I haven't bothered sorting mine yet.

  • Everyone knows the the Instagram app listen to your conversations.
Even if they deny it, probably on a technicality it doesn't listen it just hears keywords. On countless occasions I have talked about very specifc and niche things and then gotten ads for it next time I opened the app despite never searching for it on phone or any other device.

A couple of weeks ago I was at lunch and someone talked about this shade thing ‘Kings side awning’ on a 4WD in the car park, I have zero interest in them, would never google them. Got home and Instagram was showing an ad for them.

I always thought ads were targeted based on browsing history.

I checked settings on FB and Instagram, mic was on for Insta.

      • +3

I love dropping a link to 4wd supacentre into the family group chat just to give them 3 months of non-stop ads for a swag/fridge/awning they have no use for.

  • Doesn't Apple force them to declare all permissions very clearly now? How is Facebook going to explain to users why they need constant access to messages and microphone. Other than taking out full page ads in newspapers.

    • +2

Yes, it's already happening. Someone made this album of several different messaging apps when the data usage disclosure was made mandatory a few weeks ago: https://imgur.com/a/i5zJMIm

      It compares:

      • Session (developed by an Australian NGO)
      • Signal
      • Telegram
      • WhatsApp (FB owned)
      • Messenger (FB owned)

Try to read the whole thing without blinking. Pretty interesting stuff.

      • Holy shiiiiiit, look at that massive list of things Facebook Inc wants. No wonder they are furious, their entire business model is being laid bare.

I don't use any social media

    Yet you a posting in a forum…

"I don't want Facebook using my data, I only use Instagram" is another favorite quote from some people.

    • Trendy social media, I gather.

  • ;-( Not good.
