iPhone 12 Pro 512GB Silver $2032.99 Delivered/Pickup @ OzMobiles

91

Found this deal last night, it seems the lowest price so far.

I never dealt with them but did find some previous posts on Ozbargain. Looks like they have pick-up available, so walk-in/pick up might be better choice.

You might ask for price match at JB, OW if they have in stock.

I called JB and showed them this deal, eventually paid $2363 for iPhone 12 Pro 512 Silver + Apple Care at JB today.

I've known a few families spent 10k+ each year on brand new iPhones, Macbooks, iPads, Airpods Pro. I told them switch to Samsung brand and save at least 5K per year they weren't interested it. It's like talking to a brick and these people have been brainwashed by Apple.

@The-Kremlin: lol the only brain-washed are the haters who trawl EVERY thread that has an Apple device in it. Seriously, dude - haven't you got better things to do? What's more insane - buying Apple products, or obsessing over people who buy Apple products?

I know you won't be able to comprehend just how sad it is to obsess over people who use Apple products - you'll just retort with the age-old classic of DaE aPpLe ShEeP, without a hint of irony at the fact that you're bleeting the same, tired cliche that every other hater bleets.

        Apple is an astonishing company.

They have somehow convinced non-tech enthusiasts (e.g. an average IPhone buyer*) to buy their phones at double the price of a phone an average tech-enthusiast will (e.g. Android flagships include Samsung S, OnePlus, Xioamis etc) – with less features.

I can't think of any other product like this. For usually enthusiasts buy higher priced products than non-enthusiasts, as they come with more or newer features.

        *With exceptions.

        • +4

An N amount of features doesn't necessarily make a phone great. Give this to a non-technical person and tell them about all these features, I doubt most of them will care about it, use it.

A lot of people see this 'trickle' innovation as a way for Apple to profit, maybe it is, I see it as their way of slowly teaching people to be somewhat tech literate. iPhone wasn't new, but their angle was new and very approachable and spawned a whole new generation of users that saw technology for some specialised operators now it's literally a fashion item.

It's also the ability of the device to be able to create an onboarding flow to invite and teach users over time how to do things that has helped make iPhone immensely popular. IMO, iPhone was purposely made to be simple to seduce and teach a whole new generation of users to a "new" device.

          • @nicolascage: I would go with the profit theory. I guess 120 HZ will be their new big thing and selling point in 1 - 2 generations to make people upgrade from prior handsets.

"Give this to a non-technical person and tell them about all these features, I doubt most of them will care about it, use it."

Agreed. But I still find it astonishing many non-technical people upgrade iPhones yearly at these price points.

Technical people who know what they are getting and decided the iPhone is what's best for them - that I find completely normal and realise value for money isn't their main priority.

        • I care more about how I use my phone in 4 years' time rather than valuing at the face of purchase.
There's no point in valuing a car based on how much iron, plastic, rubber it has.
I'll pay a bit more for a car that is more reliable, driving experience, depreciation value, etc…

Different people see things differently, your "features" aren't the "features" I want.

      • +1

Now that the new iPhone 12 camera almost has parity with the best Android phones and the new Macbook M1 chip wipes the floor with most Intel chips I'm seriously considering end my life long affiliation with Windows and Android. Apple catching up and overtaking on the hardware stakes is not something they've done in years.

        • +2

I would definitely buy an M1 for the battery life alone (if its true what the reviews say) if I was in the market.
Especially at the price that its listed for it seems like a true bargain.
Going from a OnePlus 8 Pro was like stepping back 3 years in time though. I just didn't realise how many things android made easy (e.g. easily copying and pasting audio files from PC without going through ITunes, and being able to open the same audio files in 2 different apps with a shared file system … just 1 example of many) which an IPhone made frustrating.

          • +1

@fd9: I'm interested in any other issues. All of my music is via Spotify the copying of music isn't a problem for me.

There seem to be some big integration benefits of having a Macbook and iPhone. I copy a lot of photos from my phone to laptop but it's not as straightforward as it should be. Apple seem to allow this via WiFi.

            • +1

@C0mbat: Yes that would be nice to have everything it in together and just transfer over WiFI.

I did try a MacBook briefly, but found it disrupting my established workflow too much. Might try again next time I need a laptop if they keep what the lead they have in that space at the moment.

I've responded in a comment below with the other issues* you requested. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/594719#comment-9882813

Android you have no privacy though. Feels like being naked in public.

When Google's getting sued by the FBI and Facebook for protecting your data too hard I will gladly go back to Android.

      • I never considered privacy as a key feature as I assumed almost every app I have, website I use and purchase I make online is collecting a bunch of data about me which will be on-sold. But if that is important to you any price can be justified.

    • Name a few please

      • +7

These are features that were important to me (which I missed enough to sell the iPhone) when changing from Samsung s20+ ($784 via JB Telstra Deal) / OnePlus 8 Pro (900-1300 depending on if you want band 28) phones:

        • In display fingerprint sensor - super convenient when phone is on the desk and you just want to unlock to check a notification without lifting up for Face Unlock (Note, the phone's ALSO had face unlock for when it was needed too).
        • Always on display - I like walking into my room and just looking over the phone to see if any notifications without having to unlock it
        • 120 HZ Display - Literally cannot go back to 60 HZ. Don't realise how good it is until you used it daily.
        • Can't believe I needed to get the 11 PRO version just to get OLED
        • Shared file system which multiple apps can access the one file (e.g. 2 music players or PDF readers pointing to one folder. Bit of a specific niche usage but I liked having 2 music players paused at different locations)
        • Faster charging speeds got me out of a few pickles. I do wish Android implemented a battery health % thing to make it easier to buy used phones though.
        • Display I enjoyed my OnePlus QHD display @ 120 hz immensely (but Samsung doesn't allow using both at the same time and QHD and…… FHD on the S20+ isn't as noticeable but really is on the OnePlus 8 pro)
        • Multitasking - swapping between apps and copying and pasting stuff was a lot easier with the navigation buttons (back, home, recent).
        • USB C - so I don't need a specific cable for it
        • Home screen - being able to put an icon wherever you want and having it not revert to row 1 column 1 (or whatever the next free position is)
        • Launchers: able to use other launchers like NOVA which have infinite customisation in terms of row and column numbers, icon sizes and shapes
        • Dual apps: Being able to use e.g. dual messenger (i.e. install 2 copies of official Facebook messenger, i.e. if you have one account you like to use for marketplace + alternate apps like official messenger lite)
        • Grouped notifications : I think this is available on iOS but I couldn't get this feature working on iPhone but may have been my own error. Android shows the message sent by X person and all their 5 messages under it, without repeating their name 5 times above each message)
        • App pricing : Not a huge issue, but found it surprising an equivalent app I use on iOS vs android was $30 vs free (no ads). I am not sure if this is the case with other apps. I guess they make money by selling my data idk.

I also didn't realise the 1 generation devaluation of an iPhone when selling as I thought they held value quite well but realised. Current price of a used but mint condition 11 Pro 256 GB is $950-1050.

Things I did like about an iPhone
        - Super surprised at the amazing battery life on the 11 Pro. Superb and 1-2 hours better than my OnePlus 8 Pro (but I guess lower refresh rate, smaller screen etc). On day one of my 11 pro I got 1 hour screen on time per 5% battery for a theoretical 20 hours. This settled to 1 hour screen on time per 10% battery on day 2 but still amazing.
        - Huge selection of cases and screen protectors, and can buy one locally the same day. Absolutely not the case for OnePlus.
        - I liked that I bought a used iPhone and knew I would be able to sell it relatively easily for almost the same price as thats what everyone is searching for
        - Lots of used devices on the market with remaining Apple care + available (+ easy to see battery health) gave confidence when buying used.
        - Design choices that don't make phones unusable - e.g. OnePlus 8 pro curved display was a real annoyance and ruined the entire phone for me with ghost touches (and none of the available cases hid the curve) + light reflecting off the curved area making the first letter of each line obscured to read .

Agree but also disagree with a few points.

I came from using Android, switched to iPhone 12 recently.

          In display fingerprint sensor
It's hit/miss every now and then with the accuracy and you will have to reset the fingerprint when it stops recognising your fingerprint. Personally when I check for notifications usually whatsapp/messages I have the intention to reply so I lift up the phone anyway.

          Always on display
True would love to have this. You do need to unlock the phone in order to see the details of the notifications though

          120 HZ
I tend to disagree with this. Yes again it's a nice to have but most users especially iPhone users have not experienced higher frequency and apple's optimisation has made the scrolling experience very seamlessly. I read a few reviews unless you are scrolling up and down like crazy, what benefit do you get with 120hz not to mention the battery drain.

          Shared file system
I personally have never used this function. "2 music players or PDF readers pointing to one folder. Bit of a specific niche usage but I liked having 2 music players paused at different locations" this sounds like some savvy stuff.

          Faster charging speeds
One thing I miss Android for.

          Display
iPhone 12 has one of the best display in the market. If not the best.

          Multitasking
I think iOS offers very similar experience especially with copy and paste.

          USB C
Agree. Very strange Apple still uses lightening.

          **Home screen, Launchers*
Beauty of customisation when it comes to Android

          Dual apps
Again, I feel like this is not being used as much.

          Things I hated about Android
          - App stability: I don't know if it's just me but I find the sometimes apps crash a lot more on Android or sometimes it doesn't function the way it supposed to be.
          - RAM management: Very bad with Android, apps keep being closed randomly. A way of saving batteries but it annoys the f out of me. One of the biggest reasons why I have made the jump.
          - Resale value: I usually sell my phone every 2-3 years and iPhone has more resale value. A lot of Android phones are starting to cost more to buy nowadays but if you look into the market, the demand for iPhones is a lot higher than Android phones.

Just my 2c. No hate for Android but just wanted to share my experience.

          • @sauce2k: Thanks for the perspective :) I do understand a lot of what I posted isn't a concern for many.

To answer a few questions you posed:

"You do need to unlock the phone in order to see the details of the notifications though"

For me this is a benefit. I wouldn't want anyone reading my notifications.
There is however a setting which allows notification details to be seen without unlocking (not on the Always on Display, but on the lock screen without a password/ face id/ fingerprint) - though you do need to wake the phone up (tap, lock button). I never keep that on though as I don't want my messages being read by someone else. I am not sure if you meant unlocking as just waking the phone up or unlocking the security lock - so this point may be mute if you meant the former.

"What benefit do you get with 120hz not to mention the battery drain."

The benefit is mainly when scrolling - reading. I.e. scrolling down a news page and reading as you go. Things like that.
Whereas with a 60 hz you would scroll down 5 cm, pause, read the paragraph, and repeat - with a 120 Hz screen you can continuously scroll and read - if this suits you.

"A lot of Android phones are starting to cost more to buy nowadays"

Yea, it is quite crazy what a Samsung flagship costs on release. I heard, according to YouTuber Dave Lee, that they are priced this way to be able offer discounts during sales events. Indeed, Samsung phones (new, not used) devalue like crazy, with the Note 20 Ultra goes from $2000 -> Amazon deal of $1200 in a space of months.

        • +1

If you had no other choice, I'd say you could live without 90% of those features, maybe you couldn't live without the Dual Apps feature if that's the way you communicate with other people.

Only thing i'm concerned with is the ability to walk in and walk out with a new phone the same day if it breaks itself. Can this be done with any Android Phone?

          • @nicolascage: Not trying to be a smart arse, but if I had no other choice I could live with a $100 woolies or telstra zte phone. And if it broke, buy a new one. And do that again up to 17 times before having bought one IPhone Pro Max.

On a serious note, I DO definitely see the appeal of having that sort of in person customer service that no one else offers (the closest being Samsung Care+ advanced swap but will take one day) and if that was vital for me any amount of money would be worth it. Though for me personally its not something that's at the top of my priority list.

    • +2

Its is unlikely that an Android that can see eye to eye with a 2K iPhone is will cost $500. The more realistic figure is about 50% and there is only a few of them like the S20 FE 256GB and Find X Pro 2 when it is on sale. The rest a at the 1.3K to 1.5k range. Mate 40 Pro 256gb is almost as expensive as an iPhone 12 Pro 256.

My point is if you really match every major feature between an Android and iPhone, the price advantage of an Android is not as much as people think. There are features that Android has but iPhone don't have like 120hz screen, 8K video, dual apps, direct access to file system….. and there are features that iPhone has an Android don't like an integrated AI camera system (in particular the smart HDR), internal video color grading, factory calibrated screen….

At the end of the day it really depends on what your budget are and what features you are desperate for and what you can live without.

      • -1

I agree my 25% number was low.

I agree if you are after something specific (like camera) you are limited to certain phones like the iPhone and Pixel, or folding screens/tablet-in-pocket (Z Fold 2 only at this stage is the only viable one in my opinion), or as the above user mentioned, if privacy was something important to you.

The insane price difference (and more so that lots of people that aren't really techy or aware of these differences go out and buy it every year and sell their old one) still makes my mind boggle though.

I don't find it insane that someone who is after a specific use case or a specific need spends whatever they need to buy a certain device be it double or ten times the cost.

Lol at all the feldspar9 comments.. and the important features listed was laughable. I remember my Android buddies would be gushing at their Google pixels and samsungs, but none of them would actually use their phone with all their features. None would be making cool videos, taking photos, consume media.. instead.. they used their phones to have some weird black and white “feature” to make their phones simpler and less usable. That’s fine to lessen your screen time, but don’t preach to me how this android feature is what makes your phone amazing.

I bought a 12 pro Max 256gb for $1970 at TGG a couple weeks ago, along with an M1 MacBook, and haven’t looked back. Bought the wife a 12 pro and Apple Watch, and we are happy that we are able to use all the features, and it may come as a surprise.. but I have a good gaming PC I built, use windows for work, and we both seriously considered android to upgrade our 4 year old phones.. but to me, the resale price for Apple products made it oh so much easier to decide.

In the end, I like that feldspar and so many of my friends who are “tech enthusiasts” love OnePlus, and other Android.. they feel they got value and features.. I feel good and comfortable in my choices too. And it would be a shame if there’s no competition, but I cringe when I have experienced both sides and feldspar’s comments are not what I and many others observe.

            • -1

@Wizard: They truly are the best at marketing and no one can deny that. Apple do some things better than anyone else and this is definitely one of them.

Some people spend $2000 on an iPhone after careful consideration and deciding it offers the features or user experience they want.

Others who haven't read a spec sheet or a single review spend $2000 on a new iPhone each year and cop $1000 in depreciation each year because there's an apple sticker so it must mean its good + attended some induction to become fervent defenders of the brand.

              • -1

@fd9: When the only thing you say about apple is it's marketing, then you're talking out of our own a***. Yes, they have a strong marketing department, that other companies use as a baseline. The thing is, yes, Apple can and should add a price premium to their products. It's simple supply and demand, and everyone is trying to find their edge, but Apple's edge seems to be much more tangible to the public.

The Korean companies have strength in RAM and their 120Hz among other things, so they can stick it in their products without blowing up their prices. If Apple added 120Hz, I think it would be much more expensive than it already is, with poorer battery life. Apple do make compromises in hardware to maximise their profit, but to the end user, the difference is neglible, and the other benefits outweigh the downsides.

As a consumer, I'm much more concerned if I bought a $2K Galaxy flip, only to find out JB sells it for $999 after a few months to clear our stock already tells you more than you need to know. Same thing if I compared how much I sold my iPhone 7+ vs. equivalent Galaxy, let alone other android phones.

Apple have it in their best interests to back up their marketing with proper R&D and smart aquisitions (such as the intro of M1 chips), if they do not, then they face irrelevency like they did in the 90s (when their PowerPCs were expensive, and less powerful than equivalent PCs). Even then you can appreciate the quirkiness and elegance of some of these, and they were still a joy to use. This isn't an identical environment to those times, and I don't expect, nor do I want/need Apple to have the largest marketshare in Phones, PCs or anything.. but to say it's all marketing is just too dismissive.

The cringiest thing I've seen with Windows/Android fanboys lately is that LinusTechTips guy, he encapsulates the personification of the above comments. Just stick to what you love/enjoy.. how many times I've heard these same old comments about 'sheeple, marketing hype', and I ask how their weekend was, and all they're doing is just reflashing their Windows gaming PCs or android phones due to some issue here or there.
