They really shouldn't be able to call 1366x768 HD anymore.

    • +17

It's HD. It will always be HD. even1280×720p is HD it's the bare minimum but it's HD. 50 years from now it will still be called HD

"The first electronic scanning format, 405 lines, was the first "high definition" television system, since the mechanical systems it replaced had far fewer. From 1939, Europe and the US tried 605 and 441 lines until, in 1941, the FCC mandated 525 for the US. In wartime France, René Barthélemy tested higher resolutions, up to 1,042. In late 1949, official French transmissions finally began with 819. In 1984, however, this standard was abandoned for 625-line color on the TF1 network"

        It has changed before.

        • +1

You see the quotemarks you included. It wasnt a standard definition before now it is.

      • -1

This worked when we had just HD & Full HD. Now HD is considered more a marketing term & people expect HD to be at least Full HD. They expect SD doesn't exist in brand new products & I can't recall how many years ago I last saw a tv that's max resolution was interlacing.

    • +4

The screen I can live with.

It's the Celeron processors trying to run Windows that is just plain awful.

    • +1

It’s generally accepted that 1280x720 is HD, and 1920x1080 is Full HD.

    • U do know 720p is the definition of HD right?

      • -2

Yes 720p was high definition at the time as standard definition was less. Definitions change. The current standard definition is 1080p.

        • Standard definition = SD
          High definition = HD

"Standards" can change over time but not Definition. Hence the word definition.

As such, your original comment in relation to HD is considered to be invalid as you were trying to reword a definition.
          https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_display_resolution

          • @Mydc5r: Yes, and definitions change, and so should the standard that we call SD and HD, especially HD as SD is all but extinct.

            • @Mums Poop Sock: The point is your logic is somewhat flawed.

              HD is by definition 720p.
              U cannot change that.

If you do not like this resolution, then don't buy it. To change this "fact" will only create more confusions because you are inserting "objectiveness" to a definition.

What if I dislike the definition of UHD which is 2160p?
To me, UHD should be at least 31,800p. Where do u stop?

It should be a crime to sell a 4GB ram laptops nowadays, a single chrome window will eat that all up and will lag to the point of being unusable.

    • You exaggerate. have you used ChromeOS? I'm not sure why, but it does not seem to be as bad a memory hog as Chrome on other platforms.

      • +1

I'm not sure why, but it does not seem to be as bad a memory hog as Chrome on other platforms.

Hmmm… Maybe because it's running ChromeOS??

I'll be the anal one who clarifies only 4GB RAM should be a crime on new Windows 10 laptops sold in 2021.

But even then, it's not just the 4GB ram. It's the fact Windows probably takes up half of that 64GB eMMC and it does not take long at all to fill the rest, probably can't fit any security updates, to which performance will be further crippled.

        • FWIW, Chrome on Ubuntu with only 4GB is painful also. But at least Ubuntu is fine with a 32GB eMMC :)

    • I just tested this,
3.7gb of usage with 11 tabs on different websites open on chrome
      4gb plenty enough for
4-5 open tabs and word open for a schoolkids

      • it’s why people use edge, it’s based on chromium, takes plug ins, is native with windows 10, and uses less memory then chrome for same number of tabs.

google optimize chrome for mobile devices and to collect data from mobile devices, you can’t exclude tracking via radio towers. On windows google is probably less fusssed to optimize chrome and windows privacy settings, similar with safari on mac vs chrome on a mac, google can’t control OS optimisation and version updates outside of android.

    • My kids had a Dell 11" with an older Celeron 3*** and 4gb and they lasted them for about 4 years from start of high school
All they have open is browser and it works for them - all day battery and light weight is the key
Not a great machine - but suitable for purpose at this price

  • -1

    Garbage.

  • Will it run crysis?

    • +5

Won't even run time crisis from 1995 lol

    • The question nowadays is "can it run FS2020“

  • Not much of a deal. Can get a used Surface Pro 4 or a Samsung 12" TabPro S with a 2K OLED screen.

  • Has year Microsoft Office 365 too

    • -1

365 days of stress with that amount of RAM lol

  • Tbh they should pay us $298 to help them clear them

  • -1

    Celeron? That’s ancient.

    • +2

      Late 2019. Gemini Lake series.

  • This is not enough storage for a Windows 10 device. I have a cheapo laptop with 64 GB storage and I can't run Windows Update, even using external storage, because it doesn't have enough space on the PC. It looks like I'll either have to uninstall all of my software or just never run an update again.

    • Are able to install updates onto sd card or external drive?

      Is ram soldiered on?

      • The RAM will fight on, but it will be a losing battle.

Updates on external drives have varying levels of success. Not worth it.

      • yes, you can upgrade via usb drive, i used it on my 32gb windows 10 TV box to get to 1909 build, microsoft has also changed how windows 10 updates since build 1909, it’s now incremental rather than build builds.

        • How? Windows automatically detects low hard drive space and uses USB drive if available?

  • +2

You're probably better off buying something older and refurbished than buying this.

    • Definitely. You probably won’t get 360 degree hinges or even touch, but at least the machine will be usable.

      • You probably won’t get 360 degree hinges or even touch

        You'd be surprised

$400 gets you a i7, 8gb ram, an SSD, and FHD touch screen

        • Yeah, you really would be surprised when it comes.

Much heavier use that will include scuffing, heavier scratches, dents and chips on external surfaces, wear and tear will be visible on palm rest, keyboard and touchpad, screen may have minor scratches, white blemishes may be evident on the screen, hinges may have small cracks.

Btw the i7s are 6th/7th gen.

          • +1

@pennypincher98: Lmao, didn't notice that. How is that good condition. Wtf would it take to be less than good condition? The screen cracked? Cockroaches inside? The lid and keyboard deck coming separately?

            • @[Deactivated]: Haha yeah it's deceiving but "Good" quality is the lowest rating Renewd gives. It's reserved for the worst condition around
Kind of like "High Definition" isn't actually High lol

        • Lol, “Renewd”, peddlers of the most garbage sounding “refurbs” I’ve ever seen.

Sub-$400 will get you lots of nice ex-Corp machines from the likes of Lenovo and others that will be waaay better than the machine in the OP, even if they are older i5 or i7.

A quick search for Lenovo X1 brings up a bunch of choices on eBay.

  • I get that it’s cheap, but 4GB RAM and eMMC storage really puts you on the back foot from day 1.

    • 4GB is hard to deal with, but for a student (primary) they can store their data on one drive. I posted it as it isn't a bad deal for very basic use with a full warranty. Also, I read somewhere that windows 10 S is supposed to be better tuned for bottom end PCs. It has massive drawbacks, but maybe the fact you cannot put anything on it other than Microsoft store items, keep it a little smoother.

      • I get all that, but the experience still going to suck hard.

You’ll forever struggle with updates since you need a ridiculous amount of free space to run some of the larger ones, and with so little RAM you’ll be endlessly using a swap file which will be painful on an eMMC drive.

A good condition four year old machine for similar money will be much better, and frankly I’d trust it to last far longer than this brand new machine.

I don’t think Windows 10 S has performance benefits outside of restricting you from running most apps. Chrome won’t run slow for the simple fact it won’t run.

Steer clear. Bought one before but have refunded under warranty after the hinge fell apart from the chassis. Officeworks told me they had multiple returns for the same fault each week.

  • I wonder what happens to all the ones manufacturers, not just of laptops, anything, that they can't sell.

  • Makes a cheap tablet by installing chromeOS?

  • +5

I bought this for $302 from JB a month back (December) after price match from OfficeWorks.

This is my second Acer Spin1. I got one a year back for my daughter for her school work and based on usage and feedback i got the same laptop again for my second daughter who will start high school this year.

This is a netbook not a laptop so please bear in mind before you buy. You cannot expect to use this for work or any intense computing, below is my review

This is a compact (11 inch) netbook with 8 hrs battery life. it is ideal for school laptop due to the small size/weight and battery life.
Its a touch screen with 180 degree screen tilt which is impossible to get in this price range
My daughter uses is for browsing, youtube, google docs for her work, she uses spotify app a lot on the laptop and occasionally plays roblock.
As this is a windows machine, it comes with onedrive integration and all her docs are automatically backed up in onedrive and her study stuff is stored in her school google drive account. This way your disk space will not run out.

If your requirement is as above, this touch screen laptop for sub 300 is a bargain, if you need more intense computing you might want to look for something else.

Also note that it's Win10 Home in S mode. You could switch out of S mode to a 32bit Home version, but with the given specs you're better off staying in S mode and limiting yourself to store apps.

A decent article about pros and cons of S mode here

  • Anyone you don’t like….highly recommend this to them

  • these devices are targeted at people whose primary internet device at home is a mobile phone, it’s not for work from home users who are running powerpoint, teams, outlook and word ….. there are a lot of people who don’t own a laptop and use PC at work, or phone when at home.

think internet banking at home vs from a phone, typing up a resume when you don’t have access to work laptop e.g you’ve been sacked,

i’d pay an extra $200 and get an i3 or i5 but depends what money is worth to you and your budget e.g ln on job keeper.
