[QLD, NSW, SA, VIC] Carl's Jr. Founder's Birthday BOGOF California Classic Double Cheeseburger (via My Carl's App) on 16th Jan

680

To celebrate the birthday of Carl's Jr. founder Carl Karcher, on the 16th January you'll score a free California Classic Double Cheeseburger with a purchase.

This BOGOF offer is available at all stores and exclusive via the 'My Carl's' App:

Apple: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mycarls/id1494882749

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.AppInstitu…

FYI:

  • Carl's Jr is not a burger clone, timeline: 1940 McDonald's, 1941 Carl’s Jr. then way later, 1953 Burger King (our HJ’s).
  • Carl's Jr burgers are 'chargrilled', unlike HJ's 'flamegrilled'.
  • The burgers are BETTER at Carl's. Try the Angus burger range and taste for yourself.
  • I do NOT work or am associated in anyway to Carl's Jr. other than being a fan.

I love the idea of American fast food. Not enough to drive all the way to West Lakes or Mr Barker just for a free burger though.

    • +1

Apparently these are very similar to Hungry Jacks. I wish we had In and Out, Five Guys, or Smashburger here just to name a handful of American fast food burger chains. Their McDonalds is basically inedible though.

      • +5

Five Guys is launching in Sydney sometime this year :)

        • +5

And Marky Mark and the funky bunch’s Wahlburgers
is also coming to Aus. They’re all smelling the $’s with our ripoff junk food prices.

      • Their McDonalds

        Who is they again?

      • +2

I just heard on the radio an Australian talking to a US host and the host said McDonald's in Australia is great, it looks like the pictures and tastes good, but in the US McDonald's looks like it was recovered from an Egyptian tomb or something.

        • +4

Can confirm American McDonald's is horrific

          • +2

@starspawn: I second this. Their “Chicken” is trash and dry. Their Burgers are no burgers. Shows how Australia takes their food standards seriously.

            Their soft serve is assss.

Though I rate their buttermilk hotcakes. I prefer theirs than ours.

          • @starspawn: You've all got me curious now.

Not that I've done too much international travel but it's tradition for me to give Maccas a try in the different countries I venture to in order to gauge consistency of the product around the world. So far, I've had them in Singapore, UAE and China over the past 14yrs and the quality is pretty consistent.

I'm hoping travel to NZ will be possible this year… could give Maccas there a try then. But I'm now curious at how horrendous Maccas is in the US (I'm wondering if it's more inedible than the El Maco I recently had on a late night maccas run).

Carls Jr I've only had at the Brisbane Domestic Airport and it was OK but not brilliant… it's not replacing Betty's Burgers or some of my local eateries as my venues of choice when I want a good burger.

          • @starspawn: The gap between KFC here and there is even worse.

          • @starspawn: Yep absolutely rubbish over there and so is Carls jr and some of the massive chains that are mentioned above… outside the chains some of the best burgers I’ve had have been in US …

      • -2

After trying 5 guys in America I would pay money not to eat that cardboard again. Maccas here is way better

      • They're much better than HJs IMO.

      • McDonalds is basically inedible though.

good to see global consistency from maccies

      • Five guys are the best. So huge in Canada

      or Kill Burn
      .

    • They announced new stores like 2 years ago, one at Elizabeth and a few other places in SA.
I assume they are waiting for the right land to buy.

Honestly best burger in SA are the XConvenience ones, $10 large combo is the best price vs burger quality.

January 16 is a Saturday this year for all you folks playing at home.

  • +1

the one time i tried them the meat was like a dried out hunk of playdoh

  • Without googling, I couldn't tell you the difference between chargrilling and flame grilling the meat….

Question, how many of these chains actually cook the meat in store vs reheating it?

    • +2

Answer: All of them. Cooking raw meat patties is the easiest thing in the world and there is no reason to pre-cook them.

      • Interesting, I assumed Macca's brought them in precooked and then put them on the conveyor belt to reheat/colour

        • +1

McDonald’s, and I’m guessing all of them, get the patties in as frozen raw patties, 100% beef (about 80% lean). You put the rock solid frozen patties on the grill and cook them. McDonald’s have clamshell grills that do both sides at once.

Some places like Grilled might form their meat patties in store out if unfrozen minced meat, I wouldn’t know.

          • @AustriaBargain: Grill'd use uncooked frozen patties also.
(Based on a podcast I listened to a while back)
They use tomato sauce in the patties when freezing as they reckon it makes them nicer when cooking.

            • +1

@swimmingtoad: As a previous 5 year McDonalds grill bitch, they are indeed received frozen and we’d put them on the grill for 14 seconds.

              Cheeseburger meat is called 10:1
              Quarter pounder meat is 4:1
              And Angus meat is 3:1

Meat had to be chucked after 20 minutes in the open, surprisingly good standards when I worked there.

I still don’t know what the parts mean though.

On another note nuggets were the most annoying to cook, we’d only have two vats for nugs and you can only cook a bag at a time (20 nuggets) so if there’s ever a rush you’re (profanity).

              • +1

@Nomad2233: 10:1 means 10 to 1 pound ie they weigh 1/10th of a pound. 4:1 patties weigh 1/4 of a pound, which is why they are used on the quarter-pounder.

              • @Nomad2233: Apparently quarter pounder patties are cooked fresh now, instead of from frozen.

          • @AustriaBargain: Maccas use clam shell grill… HJs/BK use the a conveyor belt to flame grill.
ed; replied to the wrong person.
            @JuryWheel

  • Worth it?

    • Not by some accounts here. Hjs is trash and it has been compared to hjs multiple times here. We have decent burger shops around now

  • My local has been offering $4 doubles and $5 triples anyway recently so not a big deal.

Last time i had Carl's Jr waited 45 Mins for "fast food" then both my brother and I ended up with food poisoning.

    • +5

That doesn’t sound like bs at all

      • Then the whole room applauded

    • +2

      Oh hi Ronald.

So download the app, sign up and wait for it to appear in 10 days?

  • +1

I'm more a Jack in the box guy ..mmm

  • +1

The iOS app seems pretty average. You log in but you still see “sign up” on the home tab and my account tab. No idea on prices either as it’s not in the app.

  • Very like HJs in my experience, perhaps a tad tastier, so about 100% better than McDonald's trashburgers .. :-( .. !! Usually the fast food outlets with the cleverest social media and marketing schtick don't have the best product, not by a long way.

  • +1

    😏

Can anyone explain why it's called Carl's Jr and not Carl Jr's ? The grammar is puzzling.

    • +4

      Wiki says
In 1956, Karcher opened the first two Carl's Jr. restaurants – so named because they were a smaller version of Carl's Drive-In Barbecue restaurant

  • If only there was one in the Illawarra.. We don't get Carls or Nandos in Wollongong.. sigh..

    • If only there was one in Sydney!!

"I know, let's open on the Central Coast?"

If you are in Brisbane I'll put in a plug (not associated in any way, just miss being able to go there!) to the best burger place I've been to in Australia - "Just Poppys" in Riverhills. Almost worth a trip to Brisbane (except for borders being closed) just to go get a burger there!

  • These burgers are junk. I ordered the special Angus burger, I'm not sure if they put the wrong meat on, but it tasted exactly like a whopper. It was $30 for the meal including a milkshake. A Double Quarter pounder meal from Mcdonalds for half that price would have been much tastier.

  • These remind me of In and Out, not too bad, especially for $6 for 2 right now.

If you want a gourmet burger, look elsewhere, avoid the big fast food chains.

  • "Carl's JR believes that no child should go hungry" https://youtu.be/wW-4LU79qbU

  • Has anyone had a positive experience with Carl's Jr? I haven't spoken to anyone who has and the two times I've tried it the service was awful with the food being blandful slop

  • Cheaper and smaller than I was expecting. $6.95 for two. Tasty, but a bit cold so I’m guessing they made a big batch in advance.

  • We have Carl Jr in Victoria??!! Ironically the only time I saw one outside the US was on a holiday trip to China 5 years ago.

  • Is this better than Hungry Jacks?
