these are pretty good… but I've noticed these are very often on half price

    • Which country of origin is Best for this sorta food?

  • How do these compare to the Grandma's brand from Coles? I'm in love with these https://shop.coles.com.au/a/national/product/grandma-s-golde…

    • Certainly currently dearer @$23 or $30 per kg depending on the filling

      • +1

I was referring to taste, they are always half price too.

        • Thanks. Will wait for half price & try the taste.

  • +1

I usually buy KBs Prawn Gyoza https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/439768/
    How are these in comparison?

    • +2

not the same type of dumplings/gyoza, these have a different texture skin.

    • +6

Prawn Hargow have pieces of prawn in there, usually you steam them. KBs Prawn Gyoza are more of a mixture containing herbs etc with a small amount of prawn, which are best pan fried with lid on to steam but get a crispy base. Both good but quite different.

      • It's not just the hargow that are on sale here, Mr Chen's Prawn Gyoza are half price too.

Sorry though OP, I've never tried them so I can't comment :P

        • +4

Oh Mr Chen's Prawn Gyoza isn't as good as KBs in my opinion.

      • +3

Mr Chen's has the best hargow for sure! But when it comes to Gyoza I would recommend KBs.

    • General consensus is KBs are better. Definitely in our household, we've done dude by side comparison… Flavour and texture of KBs is much nicer.

      • Is there also a broad by side comparison? ;)

    • Same

  • Would recommend not overcooking these. As soon as they hot in the middle when streaming, take em out. Much better flavour and a better texture

This brand is tops tho! The soup dumplings are slick.

    • +2

Oh and oil spray or parchment paper on the steamer needed!

      • It’s better defrosted first too I think

  • +2

Awaiting half price on KBs Vegetable Gyoza

  • +9

Mr Chen's hargow is the closest in taste to the yum cha restaurants without the price tag. Yes the yum cha restaurants ones are better but they normally cost around $6 or $7 for 4 pieces in a bamboo steamer.

    • Agree!

      • +1

some of yumcha siu mai are massiff tho

    • Agree!

    • Agree sister

    • All the yum cha I ate in Melbourne is nowhere near the HK standard and more expensive than HK. Not to mention the price, the taste is nowhere near yum cha in HK. Prawn spring roll, chicken feet is much better in HK than here.

Mr Chen Hargow is Made in VN but with an excellent taste. Perfect time for me to stock up again, combined with WW offer 3000pts for $50 spend it is even better value. I nearly finished my stock of 16kg (16packs from the sale in April) last time.

I was quite surprise that this yum cha standard Hargow is Made in VN :)

      • Yum cha in Melbourne are not good. The best ones are in Vancouver Canada because many HK yum cha masters migrated there like 20+ years ago.

        • +1

I stayed in Vancouver for 5+ years and now another 5+ years in Sydney.

I can confidently say that Vancouver has better Asian cuisines overall.

          • @fatjuice: Indeed, much better IMO. Mainly because there are more hk people living in Canada than Australia I believe. In Vancouver, many HK and Taiwanese immigrants live in Richmond. I used to live in Canada for 7 years.

          • +2

@fatjuice: Agreed. Many authentic Hong Kong chefs moved to Canada. I usually go to Canada at least once a year. Over there, the YumCha is as good as those in Hong Kong if it's not better. Having said that, Melbourne's Vietnamese foods are way better than Canada :). I guess it's all down to your preference.

            • @YasimKudomi: that's true we get more vietnamese migrants here in Melbourne for sure XD

    • You sure? Hong King Kitchen is best I’ve found

  • Had a bunch of these for dinner last night, family love them. Now time to RE-stock 👍

  • +1

Not sure why but this brand 1/2 price only in WW never in Coles.

    • +4

      Coles sucks

  • How do people normally steam these? Bamboo steamer or just in a pot?

    White Boi Pleb right here.

    • +1

you can just boil it, much easier and taste good. The skin on this is thick and perfect for boiling just don't overcook it.

      • +1

Don't ever boil these particular dumplings as there are steamed and boiled variations. The only cooking instructions for these should be steamed.

        • +2

Boiling is fine. Just remove them as soon as they start to float

        • +2

You absolutely can boil these har gow. I've eaten them for years and tried multiple methods. I routinely boil them and the method works very well.

The only dumplings that shouldn't be boiled are things like siu mai, which have dense interiors and thin wrappers: if you boil them, the wrapper will fall off and you'll just end up with a ball of meat.

          • @PeterA07: sure you can also BBQ, deep fry, pan fry or grill them…

          • +1

@PeterA07: lol, if you are Asian ppl will laugh you if you boil xiu mai. The meat is not sealed by the wrap so you don't boil it. Once you boil it the wrap and the meat just fall apart.

            • @samehada: some ppl just use the microwave for all cooking so the other methods should be acceptable…

    • +3

I use my cheap kmart rice cooker, just partially fill the pot with water and put in the plastic steamer tray above it.

      • isn't plastic and heat = bad?

        • +1

yeah, it probably is. I lull myself into a false sense of security with baking paper in between it but I don't know if it really makes a difference or if it's actually a risk.

    • +1

Use a foldable steamer basket and place into a large pot

      https://m.catch.com.au/product/d-line-23cm-stainless-steel-v…

  • Rate these suuuuper highly.

  • Perfect timing, just ran out yesterday.

  • $10 for 700g at ALDI, I feel ripped off :(

  • These or Aldi hargow?

    • tell me too

    • I just had aldi hargow today, liked them a lot. Dipping sauce was very good.

Can't remember for sure, but I don't think I liked the Mr Chen's ones that much.

  • +1

Anyone tried air frying these? If so, what temp and how long?

    • +3

This skin is not for air fry.

    • +1

I have, mainly out of curiosity.

Do NOT recommend, taste wise they are alright but texture and pastry not good.

  • Do note that the price tags might not have been changed in-store at some places but they are actually half-priced (as well as other half-priced products listed on Woolworths website).

  • +1

Their hargow is much better value than the dumplings because their dumplings are just average taste. But they did pack 2 packs of dipping sauce in this hargow bag which makes the actual contents of hargow to be around 850g instead of 1kg.

    • Who do you mean by "their"?

Are you saying Woolworths ones taste better or Aldi's taste better?

      • +1

Their means Mr Chen's frozen products.

    • The dipping sauce is pretty nice

      • Traditional way to eat Hargow without dipping source.

  • +3

I prefer the ones sold at Costco, Chan's Yum Cha, I feel Chan's and maybe Mr Chen's is somewhat a little similar to authetic hargow.

For me, I dont like the KB ones, texture should be bit chewy just like in yum cha restaurants and its not and imo, has a bit of a strong bamboo smell which i dont like 🤪

    • Chen is mainland China and Taiwan, Chan is Hong Kong canton.

Although nothing to do with how they taste or made from

The stuff you get at Yum Cha with that chewy feel sometimes makes me think if they added some obscure ingredient that tastes like plastic

      • +1

Tapioca starch gives it the chewy texture. It’s a very common ingredient in Asian cuisine.

      • +2

I make prawn hargow at home and to give that chewy texture, u add 2 types of starch, one of them tapioca.. But yes, exactly what my chinese husband says, anything chewy, be it hargow, noodles or even rice paper rolls, he will say 'I bet they put plastic in it' 🤌🏻🤣

        • Rofl

        • I've seen how they make har gows on TV, the skin looks like a lot of work.

  • +1

Been eating these for years. Great value great tasting hargow! Anyone know if I will die young from eating vietnamese prawns?

  • +1

Be aware this is the 1kg version. The smaller box isn't on sale. Made the mistake previously of buying the smaller box which was the only version woolies around me have.

  • Good price, thanks.

  • +2

for some reason the seafood selection is coming up as 16 in my south melb store…and staff is syaing its online special. can someone confirm if all of the 1kg ones are meant to be half price please?

  • I've got Mr.Chens Prawn Hargow in the bamboo steamer as we speak.I also like that you get a sachet of Dipping Sauce with the box….Yum!

  • +1

Do these still include 150g sachets of soy sauce hidden in the total weight?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/9766576/redir

    • Always and its counted as weight.

  • +1

The price was $10.5 before I log into my Woolworths account for C&C which becomes $16 / bag.

Anyone else experience this? I'm in SA and the store is selling for $16 not $10.50.

    • I'm in SA and the price is showing as $16 too.

    • yep. And It switched back to half price when I choose delivery

      • I select delivery and it is still $16.

    • +1

its 16 dollars in store here in VIC.

      • at Chadstone it's 10.50.

        • all of them? the Hargow was showing as 10.50 but the seafood selection was 16 for me at south melb

          • +1

@Raggie255: seafood selection is also 10.50$. same price at Carneige.

  • No stock in Lane Cove and Crows Nest and neither store has any idea if they will get anymore. One WOW team member helpfully told me to just keep checking back in store.

Anyone know of a store with stock in Sydney's lower north shore?

  • +1

Freezer stripped bare. Sick of the me me me mentality everyone has these days. Saw a woman with at least 5 packs in her trolley.

    • -2

She might have only been able to buy them when on special. She might have lots of kids or live in a share house. She might have an eating disorder. She might have just been given a food voucher and was excited to see such a deal. You don’t know the story, so judging is not fair and will just make you more negative. I’m sick of people being bitter when they miss a deal. It’s a pack of dumplings. I’m not bitter that the SA price where I am is higher. It’s just food. You eat and it comes out the other end. The irony is that you’re bitter because you also have the “me me me” attitude. You missed out, she didn’t. Tough luck. There will always be another deal.

    • +1

Agree with you. Lots of people are selfish just like toilet paper now hargows

  • Guys out of stock everywhere and Covid-19 means no raincheck

    This sux

  • Is $16 in Tassie(in store and online). not $10.50.

  • Is this meant to be just online purchases? I went to the store and was told it’s not relevant to in-store purchases and was only an online shopping special. . Has anyone managed to purchase in store with success?
