Samsung 640 GB SATA Internal Hard Drive for $85 (+$29 for external enclosure)

51

This is the best deal I've seen around. If you think about it, 640 GB for $85, that's equivalent to more than 7.5 GB per dollar.

The place is called MSY and it's well known for the cheapest computer parts as well as bad customer service. However, the money you save is worth it.

There are branches in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and SA. Refer to the website or price list for more details.

    Still I will give you a +1

  • I have bought countless times from MSY and sometimes their bad customer service is not worth the money and hassle spent. Once you have a problem with a product you've purchased I guarantee you'd rather spend an extra 10-15% at CPL where you get a whole new world of cusotmer service exprience as compared to MSY.

If you want my real life stories of the horrors I had at MSY (especially the Malvern store in Victoria) drop me a message.

    • I bought from them once. Kingston SDHC card. Good price. Prepackaged, well known brand with lifetime guarantee on the product. Got it from the Box Hill store. Queue fluctuates in size. Allow extra time on the parking meter if you are driving.

      Working fine at this stage.

  • MSY certainly have consistantly low prices. I've bought stuff from both Brisbane stores in recent months, and not had a problem with in-store service. Fortunately I've not had any reason to need after-sales service…
A great thing about their low prices is that OfficeWorks WILL price-match & then take off 5%. I've put it to the test with a couple of items, and they DO honour the policy if you ask.
In one case, I got a laser printer toner for 1/2 the OW shelf price, AND used my credit card (with no surcharge that MSY/Umart/GameDude charge), AND got FlyBuy points, plus a/sales service to fall back on.

    Cheers,
    Live Long and Prosper.

    • OMG! your serious OW honour your MSY price match? if so this story alone worth an seperate OzBargain entry!! I need to give it a try. Thanks, teaearlgrey.!!

      • OW will match ANY advertised price!!! They'll even match on-line (only) merchants as long as you factor in the shipping costs…
I didn't even have to ask for it the 1st time. A salesman offered assistance when I was checking out speakers that I intended getting at MSY for less, and he offered to price-match -5%. He checked the MSY price on-line & did the deal, no problems!!!
Can't speak too highly of staff service at OW Garden City Brisbane.

    • Oh my … wow … that is so good :)

Thank you for posting that! :) :) :)

  • MSY have pretty garbage service to be honest. But you get what you pay for, right?

Besides, if you have a problem with a hard drive, go to the manufacturer. It's not the store's fault it didn't work.

  • I had an issue about 2 yrs ago (Malvern store) - managed to fry the board of the HDD by resting it on top of another HDD (problem between chair and keyboard) … they replaced it no probs … obviosuly without knowing the above ;-)

Service sucks .. but generally MSY is still the one I compare others to. If you can find a similar price go elsewhere, if price is the only point MSY is pretty good here in VIC.

    • Ah, the old PEBCAK error - Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard.

  • It's true that the customer service is bad, but like a poster have already said, you get what you paid for. I guess if you've done enough research on the stuff you're getting prior going to the store, then service shouldn't be much of a problem (besides lining up those bloody long queues)

    So my advice:

    1. Know what you want

    2. Go there during school hours or office hours for the shortest queues

  • I've never had a problem with Brisbane's msy but I haven't had to return anything either. Service is nice and friendly and theres never been more than 3 other customers when I'm there. Must be a NSW/VIC thing?

    • Yea, the one in Melvern Vic is the head office of MSY (the big boss started out from there). So they are always packed with people (well, mostly students because Monash uni is about 10 mins walk). I went there a few times. The service isn't too bad given the price you pay. They have a new VIP service counter which speed up the process. You can have a look at their site for more details.

      • How does the VIP service counter work? I've been to the Box Hill store and the queue can range from 5 to 25 people (out the door and across the footpath). They have a VIP queue too but I wasn't sure if I could use it (I had e-mailed … but didn't know if I could just walk to the front of the queue)

  • For 95 cents more you get 640GB SATAII External USB HDD with Western Digital 7200RPM 16MB WD6400AAKS + Astone ISO-380 3.5", USB 2.0 at Mwave http://www.mwave.com.au/newAU/mwaveAU/productdetail.asp?sku=…

  • Or you could get the SAMSUNG 750GB SATAII 32MB SA108 for $99 from TradeClub.
    http://www.tradeclub.com.au/

Best part is your don't have to deal with MSY customer "service" and stock issues and lining up like cattle with a bunch of Harvey Norman worthy Mum+Dad nOObs who want full-service shopping and waste MY time.
