MediaTek chip though… Previous MediaTek phones I had used before got hot easily and felt laggy… How is the new generation?

    • +1

My wife has Oppo Reno Z and it has got MediaTek and no lag even after around 1 year of use.
I only have issue with 4GB RAM on my Xiaomi Redmi note 8, It lags. I'd expect a 6GB/8GB variant this year from them

      • Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I think with how bloated Android is becoming, 6GB should be a min now

        • I've got the Oppo Reno2 Z which has a Mediatek P90 and it's brilliant for every day use. I don't game so can't comment, but have had this almost a year and bought it when I was on a tight budget, thinking it'd get me by for a while but I as much as I want a new phone right now I just can't justify it because this one is still sailing along like a champion.

    • Has a benchmark of around 300,000 so a pretty good chip set for this price point

      https://youtu.be/uTYx71Ab9tA

    • MediaTek new chips are not that bad

    • The reviews are that the new Dimensity chips are quite good.
I am like you over the years have prefered the SD chips.

is every phone now 6.5 inches or more? They dont make them any smaller these days?

    • +1

      Pixel 4a is smaller @ 5.81"

    • iPhone SE. 2019 flag ship CPU and small screen.

    • +1

Most phones screens are bigger, but the actual phone size has been pretty consistent.
No bezels, and remember that most phones have a stupid display ratio, so the inches sounds bigger because the screen is weirdly tall for the width.

The pixel 4a is only 20mm taller, and about the same width, as the iPhone 6 despite having a screen over an inch bigger.

So 6 inch is the new small.

This or Poco X3? Which one is better? Xiaomi's phone model nos. are so confusing.

    • +2

Impossible to answer but here's a comparison
      https://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=10661&idPhone2=…

    • Poco x3

    • Poco X3 is better IMHO

    • No 5G on the POCO

    • Poco, better camera and decently better chipset.

But this has 5g. If that's important at an then this phone is the better phone. Otherwise both phones have some pretty good and similar specs. 5g is more future proof.

      I'd probably go this phone…
Except I paid for the poco a month ago, and hopefully get it Monday

  • If I have to pick one, Poco X3 for me, but the 9T is not bad either

  • Is anyone concerned about these Chinese phones? Obviously, phone/software manufacturers use and sell our data to a greater or lesser degree…buttt these things have pretty big backdoors.

"As per the report by Forbes, Xiaomi is sending all the private data of users to servers hosted by Alibaba, another Chinese tech giant. The search data is reaching the Chinese tech giant even if the user browses in incognito mode. “It’s a backdoor with phone functionality,” said Gabi Cirlig, a cybersecurity researcher. “My main concern for privacy is that the data sent to their servers can be very easily correlated with a specific user,” he warned."

I'm only a student of the dark arts but it would be easy to route through proxies to China. Or include protocols to use your front facing cam to record you. Even Instagram was potentially caught out recently with iPhone.

I would not go near them as an everyday device.

The data breach may not hurt now but what about in 5-10 + years?

    • +1

Other phones also use and sell your data, but aren't reported by media

      • +1

        That's why I mentioned it…?

    • I mean you aren't worried about Apple and Google sending even more of your info home.

      • +1

I am concerned about that too.

    • It's great that a majority of last generation of Xiaomi phones have hidden front cams lol.

      • Not sure what u mean?

        • I have a Mi Mix 3 5G and the camera needs to be slide out to be used and heaps of last gen of Xiaomi phones use pop up cameras so no camera behind the screen.

          • +1

@aussieprepper: Nobody can hack you and film you without than camera popping up. My Oppo has a similar popup wedge, no notch is wonderful. Downside, just one more thing to break/make water proofing harder.

I like the next gen Xiaomi camera hidden under the screen, less security for the paranoid but more robust/waterproof design without the annoying notch.

    • so do u have a nokia 3310 then…….

      • No. Custom android rom.

    • Many of us Xiaomi users don't use the manufacturer provided software. And I don't think it's a coincidence that Xiaomi phones have such a large global development community.
Custom ROMs usually provide Android version updates, (the more popular devices anyway), and ongoing security updates long after the manufacturer has abandoned the device.

Debloating is another less drastic option where system apps, yes system apps, can be removed from the device.

Another solution is to install DNS level ad, or host, blocking via third party, (open source if you're that way inclined), apps.

Can even degoogle your phone if it's not just the Chinese that your concerned about, (in terms of privacy).

You have choice way beyond which manufacturers device you decide to purchase, (when it comes to security and privacy).

      • I didn't think that many ppl did that. Or that there's a big dev community, that's a good thing for sure.

Absolutely a good idea to implement at DNS level. I'm just not sure of how many ppl buying these phones would go to those lengths.

Ppl, don't get me wrong I don't think there bad phones. Good hardware.

And as I said: all tech companies use and sell our data. The CCP standing behind Xiaomi is my concern.

Without goong to such lengths to mitigate, I would just say the other tech companies are the lesser of "evil" that's all.

        • +1

Unlock bootloader, install Orange Fox Recovery, install Lineage.

I've had a few Xiaomi phones now and that process circumvents any concerns around the device's country of origin.

Not everyone is savvy enough to do this for sure,……but it's the main reason I avoid devices with Mediatek SoCs.
There's just not enough community development for Mediatek so your stuck with the manufacturers software.

          • @sir_bazz: How good are the roms these days?
5 years ago when I last did it they were often a bit buggy and lacking in battery dnd performance optimisation.

            • +1

@gunslinger: There's enough variety in ROMs that you can pick and choose whatever best suits your needs.

As with most things, the ROMs that attempt to include the most features and customisations, are usually the ones with higher incidence of odd behaviours.

The simpler ROMs, and kernels, tend to have much fewer issues.
And thats another reason I lean towards Lineage as a preferred ROM. It's more like a bare bones ROM with a strict checklist of what must work before it can be tagged as "official".

Ohhhh and maybe Xiaomi specific, but many custom ROMs tend to outperform MIUI in benchmarks, but there's no free lunch so the trade off is higher battery usage.

Wowzer! Ppl so touchy now days.

  • +1

buttt these things have pretty big backdoors

    Really….

    • That's what I've heard:

"This is not the first time Xiaomi has been accused/caught in data theft. Earlier in 2014, a cybersecurity firm F-Secure found that Xiaomi phones send all the information stored in the phone, like contact number, messages, and IMEI number of a handset to server in China."

      • -1

Sounds like Google and Apple. How else does one device know what's happening on another. We are more comfortable with that, we know what they are doing for us and we know they sell the data. When you know the motives (greed) they are easier to trust.

      • Not sure if it is related to this info theft or not but I prefer not to create an account with MI.
Some people do so to store their contacts and other info. That is not theft, that is the user being negligent.
It also helps to stop unwanted ads. You then only get the mountain of ads from your google apps (not MI).

  • Compare to Samsung A42 on this deal:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/594043

I will happy to trade the 1080 screen with the 720P screen on the A42 when I can get two year local warranty and N40 band.

Most important I am doing my bit not to support CCP enterprise.

  • I cannot get $269.11 AUD, I get $301.45 (no extras) what am i doing wrong?

    • Promo codes 464646 & 128128 have expired. Appears they have replaced them with US$10 & US$20 store coupons, which reduces the price of 64GB to US$189 + GST. Store coupons can be claimed now and are valid from 7pm tomorrow.
