  • Looks like a great price. Can you add RAM to this? 8GB is too little.

    • +5

Unfortunately not. LPDDR4 can only be soldered, no SO-DIMMs.

      • +8

Another deal, another soldered RAM scam!
Its bad enough all the 4GB soldered + 4 GB laptops labelled as 8GB but this is even worse.

        • +5

In what way worse? Finding out that this is 4GB + 4GB is a pleasant surprise for me because Ryzens go better dual channel.

          • +1

@shaybisc: Because 8GB is simply too little for many people.

            • +7

@noodlefan: I thought we all whinged about 4GB…. Guess I gotta get with the times…

              • -2

@khepri: The type of people who can't figure out how to close browser tabs are the same type of people who will find shit to complain about no matter what. Blocking them is a pretty good solution, since they've rarely got anything to actually add to a discussion.

                • +1

@Joker042: Same, they've got like 50 apps running in the background or startup and then complaining about the performance.

                  • @mushi33: Aaaand they neg you when you point it out :)

  • +13

Shame - looks good but holding out for 16GB RAM. Soldered RAM on this one.

    • +2

Same or at least upgrade-able, it would have to be a stupidly low price to be stuck with 8GB - its even harder getting deals for 13.3 and 14 inch as opposed to the larger 15.6 inch.

      • +2

Noob question - what is the harm in soldered RAM, other than that you can't increase it?

        • +11

          You've answered your own question.

        • +1

No harm. Sometimes it's cheaper for the OEM to just put soldered RAM, instead of a SO-DIMM. LPDDR4 is supposed to be more power efficient and have more bandwidth then regular DDR4.

        • +7

There's also the RAM failing out of warranty for whatever reason. No swapping it out?

  • +2

I see no mention of warranty anywhere. Assuming it has one, how would the warranty work?

    • +1

Warranty would be whatever Amazon US offers, as Acer Australia won't touch it.

      • Do they not have international warranty?

        • Yes

        • +3

When looking up the model number I found the document below:

          https://static.acer.com/up/Resource/Acer/Docs/US/Standard%20…

"This limited warranty is valid only in the U.S. and Canada. This
limited warranty extends only to You, the original purchaser, and is not transferable to anyone
who subsequently purchases, leases, or otherwise obtains the Product from You."

          Also the Amazon page states:

          "Amazon Global Store
International products have separate terms and are sold from abroad and may differ from local products including fit, age rating, and language of product, labeling, or instructions.
Manufacturer warranty may not apply but you may have other rights under law."

      • -3

        Acer offers international warranty.

  • +3

Been monitoring the price of this and while it's gone down to around $850, still a good price.
It's a shame to be bottlenecked by a low amount of unupgradable RAM though..

  • -4

Thats why im still using a MacBook 2012 with 16gb of ram and 1tb SSD. 9 years later and they still cannot fit 16gb !?

    • +2

not for this price lol how much was ur macbook

      • Surely the price wouldn't be substantially more for 6gb extra gigs for futureproofing

      • -1

Well, at least his username checks out.

    • +6

Well the MacBook 2012 wouldn't have cost $877.85 at that time. The new generation, 2020, MacBooks, are limited to only 8GB RAM, cost almost twice the price and have lost the ability to run Windows natively if needed.

      • -1

New M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are not limited to 8GB of RAM.

        • +2

Oh yeah, how much are they?

        • Doesn't the price come up to $2249 on the Apple website to add another 8GB. Apple charge another $300 for the additional 8GB of RAM. I know Apple placed 16Gb on the M1 SOC, to keep up their margins, but if you were to purchase a laptop with SO-DIMMs it would only cost $50 retail for the 8GB of DDR4.

      • I don't understand all the negs about it…if you are buying this shit you only need a couple of browser tabs to clog the entire system. You cannot even upgrade. For the record I gave around 1200 AUD for my MacBook with 4gb of ram and 500gb of spining disk. I did upgrade the memory and 256gb SSD straight away, the current SSD was 2 years ago I think. And I'm still use the spinning disk as long term backup for the missus.

  • I always find it funny and amazing how competitve Renoir chips are, pretty much can match/outperform Intel "H" counterparts at higher efficiency.

  • +1

The pricing is strange at Amazon. It's like this is the only model Acer wants to sell you and it has to be in this configuration

  • +1

Warranty is provided by Amazon Australia in accordance with Australian Consumer Law (ACL),

Extract from the Warranty & Support section on the product page:

" This policy does not restrict or alter any non-excludable statutory consumer protections or rights you may have, including under the Australian Consumer Law."

Anything sold by Amazon Australia is covered by ACL. There should be no issues with warranty claims.

    • +5

That's all well and good, but it's sold by amazon US, not Amazon AU.

      • +3

        Yeah now what😱

        Edit but purchased via AU?so…

    • +2

Purchased a Lenovo Flex 5 from Amazon US. Amazon AU were good about getting it sent back for a full refund when mine died.

  • Touch screen?

  • experts.. opinion pls. should we get it or skip it?

    • +2

      Yes

      • Yes for what?

        • +1

          No

Kidding haha, I have no idea what Ryballs meant

    • +2

Well Ryballs upvoted, probs get it

      But I'd say skip it

      • Nah I wouldn't buy I was just trying (and failing) to be funny

  • So are these not dual channel requiring 2 memory sticks.

    • You can run in dual channel configuration with soldered RAM. It doesn't always mean that you need two Dimms.

  • Would this be a good laptop for a 9th grade student?

    • Yup perfect for a school laptop

      • Also some Ryzen 3's and 5's around, good luck

    • +2

It would be viewed as overpowered for a school laptop. It is faster than Intel's i7 processors in a lot of workloads. However, at this price point, it would be hard to find anything comparable.

    • Kids will probably prefer a touch screen and stylus, but that won't be this cheap.

  • +1

Great offer. This is a device for 3 years. Plenty of cores. Ram isn't that bad. Acer has a great build quality, previously and has seemed to be maintained.

    How are thermals?

  • I prefer the previous design 😅

  • 8 cores is nice but how many threads?

  • +2

Honestly my Samsung Ultrabook runs 100 Chrome tabs fine and it's 9 years old! It has 6-8GB ram, I got it for 1k new off some bloke on Gumtree but it was 2k RRP.

If my cat didn't shit on it Christmas day, I wouldn't even need to upgrade for basic workloads.

This looks like a really good price tho! Even better if you got Amazon gift cards at 10% off recently.

    • Sounds like your cat did you a favour!

  • +3

Good price but display is a let down…low brightness at barely 250nits and poor colour accuracy 67% sRGB

    • +1

You expect too much from sub $1k laptop

      • Ux425 from Asus was only $800 on boxing day. Though it is equipped with a less powerful Intel i5-1035G1, it does have a better display with 300 nits and 100% sRGB. All depends on what you value more.

        • What can you get at the moment for sub $1k with decent specs and a 14+ inch, 300+ nit decent colour screen? Genuine question as the 250nits has put me off buying this and the Lenovo's for a while. It's for my teenage niece and nephew.

  • Considering this one for my two teens. Note an Import Fee is added at checkout, $83 for 2 laptops, bring the total to $919 each.

  • +3

if youre looking to surf the web, watch a bit of porn in (FHD) while youre studying then this is a great lappy at a dam good price.

    • +2

I'm sure it's capable of most every day tasks and more. Problem is people want top shelf products for bargain basement prices. Only issue I see with this deal is warranty support, other than that, nothing to complain about at this price…

    • VR Porn it won’t do

  • Can someone please explain to me why 8gb of ram is insufficient? This unit is not targeted at power Photoshop or autocad users… I use both on my Dell i7 with 8gb and have to yet run into speed issues resulting from a lack of ram….

    • +1

It just depends on how you use it. The 4700u CPU is more powerful than an i7, so it was designed to be a workhorse, where people need 16gb of RAM. If you are mainly using it for Office. Facebook etc, it is definitely more than enough.

    • Because it got a decent gpu that can allocate between 512mb to 2 gig of system ram, that leaves only 6 GB free for windows and your game with 2 GB vram

  • If it was this Acer Swift 3 (2020) 3:2 ratio it would be great.

  • Its $976 now. Demand pricing.

  • +1

    Poor screen and crap brand

    • +1

Acer support is terrible. They have offices worldwide and service centres, yet they don't offer worldwide warranty. If you're going to go Taiwanese, Asus is the way to go as they offer better build quality and worldwide warranty.

      • +1

Acer's Aus warranty for my Aus Acer was actually the worst customer service I've experienced.
Asus sounds so much better - didn't know they did worldwide warranty!

  • +2

    8gb is fine stop whinging

    • Agreed

    • Absolutely…

    • Not for VM. I'm looking for 16 at least.

  • Hey guys quick question, will this ship with an Australian power plug? I already ordered but didn't think about this.

    • You will need a adaptor as the laptop is made for US market.

      • Thanks mate
