Doing a quick google currency conversion, and comparing ASOS's GBP to AUD prices for their goods, it looks like you might be better off buying in GBP if you have a credit card with a good exchange rate and low or nil conversion fees (eg: 28 degrees master card).

    • Used paypal and got 8 doillars cheaper on the bigger GHD after conversion. Thanks for pointing out.

    • Thanks. Ordered it in pounds and got it for $105.78AUD….

  • Great Deal. Wish I had seen it yesterday; just paid $210 from Ry.com.au

  • Does the fact that it only has a UK warranty matter?
Is it all good for Australian power?

    • Yup, you just need an adapter.

or cut the plug off and reterminate with a aussie 3 pin plug.

        • I just got one. i accidentally cut off the UK plug without checking which wire was connected to the live.

If you can help: how do i know which wire to connect to the live?

          Thanks

There should be two live and a ground? With AC current, the two live shouldn't make a difference, they could go either way. As long as the ground is done correctly, which is usually a brown wire, which you'd attach to the straight pin in an aussie plug, not either of the angled ones.

NOTE: I am not an electrician. You might blow up following my advice.

        • haha nah there is no ground. this device is not earthed. it's just a two wire device.

i THINK with this device the polarity will matter because of the possible use of diodes.

          but thanks anyway mate!

Salem, Brown is ACTIVE (just remember, if i touch the BROWN, i am in the shit)
          Blue is usually neutral
          GREEN, GREEN/YELLOW is Earth.

Its AC, double insulated, so in this case "polarity" is not relevant.
In fact my GHD had a removable UK plug leaving a two pin plug, which i cut off and connected to the "slanty" AUST plug, no earth connection.

That said, if you dont know what you are doing, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS….DEATH MAY RESULT.

        • yeah that's exactly right! ive that GHD with the removable UK plug leaving the two pin plug. i just want to put the UK plug back on but im just scared about the polarity of the two pin plug (since it has no markings).

im dumb, and shouldn't have removed the two pin plug without checking how it originally sat. my bad.

        • all good now. thanks oz-dxer.

yeah the polarity for ac doesnt matter.

just remember, life is like a box of chocolates (live = brown).

        • Ozbargainers,

please don't do this because firstly it's illegal and secondly it's dangerous. What happens if someone gets electrocuted using your modified GHD because you have inadvertently stripped the insulation while cutting off the plug? Guess who's liable for that? If you want this done go see a licensed electrician who will happily perform the modifications for you for next to nothing.

The fact people here are asking which wires are active and neutral doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me.

gosh caramellokoala- I think you've been hanging out with the fun police a bit too long. Either that or you're an electrician. Luckily you dont need any instilled faith in ozbargainers as it's a forum where open discussions are encouraged. btw i didnt neg u.

  • Great deal! I just got my GHD from HQHair UK on monday for $132 AUD. ASOS was dearer at the time, but now the tables have turned! great bargain!

  • Just picked up one - so much cheaper than Aus.

  • I picked up the ghd Scarlet Straightener Deluxe Gift Set for $249 about a week ago, at the time is was slightly cheaper than ASOS. Even with the 20% off i would be willing to pay that bit extra for Australian stock, therefor not looking cheap infront of my girlfriend at christmas haha.

  • Thanks. It looks like santa will be bringing me something this year.

  • I'm no GHD expert but is this not the same thing?

    http://www.ghdstraighteneraustralian.net/ghd-straighteners-b…

I believe despite the "australian" in the url it's still an overseas model but it's definitely cheaper. Or should I be wary of an untrustworthy website? The reviews are suspiciously worded…

  • im no hair expert. just wondering how are GHD's different from other Hair straighter? I mean its just non stick+ constant heat right? but what the magic about GHD?
my hair is 2 cm long and i dont need it but im just curious.

      Gather around for storytime, children…

I used to date a hairdresser. When she started her apprenticeship, they gave her a fairly expensive non-ghd hair straightener. It was pretty good, ceramic plates, high heat settings, etc. However, it would snag just that little bit sometimes while pulling through hair, and would take a few minutes to heat up when you first turned it on. Plastic parts of the handle near the plates would also get quite hot.

She then ditched it for a ghd. No snagging when pulling through your hair, heats up in barely any time at all. Much less heat seepage into the plastic parts. Just an all-round better product.

      • thanku salem for educating me and for storytime. :)

    • it's just an everyday fact now, that ghd is simply superior. ask any girl who has gone from non ghd to ghd…

      it's defintely not a gimmick.

  • I have a question - I have bought from ASOS before but when I went to pay by paypal it processed then went the XMASSHIP code has already been used once.

Then i recieved a paypal email saying the amount of 71 pounds has already been processed. But I have not received an ASOS email that should accompany it. Also, under my profile it has no information about the order either.

I guess I should email them?

  • Upon further inspection the paypal transaction has been cancelled.

I also think the deal may have expired.

    The following errors have occurred:
the discount code "XMASSHIP" has already been used and is no longer valid

  • "GHD stylers have a universal voltage which can vary from 110v to 230v and are supplied with a 3 pin UK plug which can be removed to reveal a European 2 pin Plug. All other Socket types will require an adapter (not supplied) please check Voltage before use."

We are 240V here, so that means it won't work? :\
What are the downsides of using a converter vs chopping it off and putting your own plug on?

    • No, it will work in Australia. Even australian stock is 110v to 230v, just comes with a Aus plug.
