House Far from nbn Node, and Poor 4G Coverage - What Are My Options?

We recently moved from a house that was close to an NBN node, so we had really great speeds of up to 95mbps.

We are now living at a house that has no NBN node nearby, and as such our speeds can be as low as 10mbps in the evenings. And unfortunately despite living in one of the larger regional areas in Australia, less than 100km from Brisbane, our 4G coverage here is poor - often only getting 1 bar of coverage.

Are there any affordable options to get faster internet?

    Move back.

    • Long story short not really, you can get a 4G Extender from Telstra which you stick on your roof to get better coverage. But what NBN technology are you using? It is hard to give you specific advice without an address. The portals for NBN are all dependent on location for knowing what services you can get. For extending 4G take a look at https://www.telstra.com.au/coverage-networks/network-coverag… .

Yeah sorry bro, you're probably screwed - this is something that terrifies me regarding relocating, like before I buy a house I need to know the NBN speeds and phone reception levels.. you could try an antenna to see if you can get any better 4g speeds but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Buy where FTTP is. Problem solved :-)

Have you tried all three carriers' networks? For example, where I live Optus shits on Telstra by a large margin, whereas almost all of the rest of town is the other way around, so if you have preconceptions about Telstra being the best and haven't checked the others, check their coverage maps and get some prepaid sims to be sure

    • It's more our physical geography than the area as a whole - we live half way down a plateau that has a tower at the top.

      • How about on your roof, for an external antenna for fixed wireless?

  • Nothing comes close to the 95mbps NBN fibre speeds that you were used to. Even if you were able to get 5G the minimum guaranteed speeds are terrible.

Check the NBNco website/rollout map. It might show an estimate of when NBN fibre will rollout in your suburb. Plus it also shows the areas where NBN wireless is rolled out.

If money is no object then have a look at Satellite.

    • The NBN rollout map doesn't show the FTTP upgrade ETA. NBN wireless isn't available when connected to FTTN. If money is no object you would pay for FTTP through NBN or a private fibre company.

  • Acacia Ridge, Browns Plains, Eight Mile Plains and Oxenford is going to have FTTP. The user pays FTTP option through NBN for everywhere else is on hold.

  • I think there are a couple of issues here. But firstly, do you have neighbours? Are they experiencing the same problems? What NBN speed are you paying for?

You are implying that your NBN speed is slower at peak times than it is at other times. What is the fastest speed you can get outside of peak times? If it's 25Mbs or faster at any time, you are getting all that NBN guarantees.

Your peak speeds should only be lower than your off-peak speeds if your RSP (ie who you pay for your NBN) isn't paying for sufficient bandwidth. If that's the case, you may be able to get better and/or more consistent speed by changing RSP's.

Don't know. Sign up to be notified of Starlink beta https://www.starlink.com/

Get a (now FREE!) quote for a FTTP upgrade to your premises.

I've seen prices between $3k for a nearby FTTN upgrade, to $6k for a distant (only getting 50mbps) upgrade. I'd be interested what other prices pop up.

Expensive? Yes. Rolled into a $500k house purchase cost? Absolutely worth it.

I get 13Mb/s all the time on ADSL because Helstra are shaping for some reason since September,
so I here your pain on speed, but if you can do that 24/7, you can download 4TB over the course of the month.
But you said your speed gets down to 'as low', so, how high does your speed go?

Thanks for all the replies. I switched to Superloop from Mate and have found my speed is pretty steady now around 55mbps. Also switching from my standard 2.4Ghz Wifi channel to 5ghz has helped with a slightly faster speed.
