  • Good for global?

I’ve got this exact sharpener and it’s pretty good. Strong suction and will not move on bench top. Sharpened my scissors and cheapo knives very fast. They’re not suitable for Global knives as those knife edges are much more pointy and narrow whereas other knives have a wider angle knife edge, which this sharpener is good for.

I use this minosharp tool for all my Global knives and it’s very efficient and consistent.

Since Global knives are very sharp with their thin pointy edge, they will also dull faster, especially if used on hard chopping boards, so regular sharpening is needed to keep them razor sharp and safe.

For reference, I sharpen mine each fortnight and use them daily on a hard bamboo chopping board. It takes 7swipes each knife so the whole process takes just 5mins tops.

      • Thanks I saw that minosharp on special a while back n thought I wouldn't need to sharpen global for ages. First time I got global. Thanks for tip 🤠

      No.

Any automatic sharpening system that doesn’t use honing rods in a jig, or a whetstone by hand is going to do sad things to good knives.

Plus global are sharpened at around 30 degrees, unlikely any pull through is going to maintain that.

I don’t know if OzB is down with buying expensive things for long term gain - I figure it would be - but you are a lot better dropping a hundred dollars on a couple of decent whetstones and learn to sharpen your own knives.

Better edge and they will last longer. I am taking myself at the moment - have put a razor edge on my set of globals at home.

I’ll do your globals for you if you want to get them to me - I have been through all the blades in my extended family and want more to work on…

Once they are sharp they should last 6-12 months as long as you hone them on a steel note and again to straighten the edge.

Ah ok then I did go slightly down a mini rabbit hole on YouTube about Whetstone a while back but then I got my next gen consoles and been side tracked a tad.

I do love using my knives in the kitchen so I do want to look after them.

I'll look into it thanks for the offer though mate 🤠

No probs. The sharpening forum in reddit is pretty good for info.

Knives and Stones in Sydney is a really good operation, I mail ordered my stones from after going down the same rabbit hole.

HMU if you want any (beginner) advice.

      • Aren’t globals 10-15°?

  • I read it as Amy Shark Knife Sharpner. Far out!

  • $5.24 on aliexpress ?

  • Is this one actually genuine though?

    • +2

Genuine what? You don't use these on good knives, no matter who makes them.

    Is this the same, $1.99?

    • Haha

These are good for cheapo knives, you can see the shards of metal coming off but the knife comes out sharp

If the store name bothers you

    Why would it?

  • +1

I don't know how sharp these really make your knives, they more so give it a chunky serrated edge, which is great for tomatoes! Would never use on any decent knife.

The best knife sharpener I've ever used is the wheel based one which attaches to a bench grinder. It is a little more expensive but worth it if you have some decent knives, they will come out like razors (not joking, can shave with them).

  • Ordered one of these the other day (green elephant ceramic honing rod) ~$70:

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07VBBGPFT

not a knife sharpener per-se, but a honing steel for maintaining the edge

    more reviews here: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B019MQCDZW

    • Cheaper at Ikea

      • Ceramic honing steels are not identical.

  • Are these portable.? I was thinking of taking one to work. I really hate the back stabbing with blunt knives.
