3 Scam/Spam Calls Tonight Suddenly? Anyone Else Get The Same?

Tonight alone I've suddenly gotten 3 spam/scam calls:

  • Some mob for solar panels about a government rebate. (I'm in an apartment, that stopped them quickly), using a 0411 number
  • A robo call for a survey on victories hotel quarantine thein (straight hangup) an 03 area code so probably reasonable and I have previously lived in Melbourne
  • Euro-fx (I think) about investing from an 0488 number

When I asked Euro-fx about how they got my number, they said I had an account formerly and no activity so they were calling about it. I don't remember signing up with them.

Interestingly my Samsung mobile flagged the calls (admittedly letting Samsung know who calls me but eh) the solar panel mob as potential scam and the others as suspected spam

I'm assuming this is due to a competition I entered somewhat recently selling out the details, can't work out which although I wouldn't put it past the radio comp I entered over the weekend.

Just wondering if anyone else seeing the same?

  • I feel no empathy for annoying cold calls to residential/personal phone numbers (B2C marketing as they call it).

Mate, next time they call you, just tell them to hold the line while you "answer someone at the door", then leave them hanging on the line for as long as you can. That should frustrate them more than anything.

    • Get an umpires whistle and give it everything you got - or one of those starter horns on a aerosol can… blast it into the phone until they hang up deaf.

  • I have multiple calls from 03 numbers today.

  • can't work out which although

All of them! your info is worth a fortune… why do you think theres 50 competitions a day asking for your name, addy, phone number DOB, when you ate last etc

  • I got 2 random 04xx numbers today and I don't recognise them and they didn't leave a message.

  • I got a random "No Caller ID" call today, rejected it so no idea what it was about. Bugging me now.

If it was important they would have left you a message.

"Render, call me immediately. You just won the lotto."

If they didn't leave you a message, you didn't win the lotto.

I've been getting all sorts of calls from unknown numbers, some even show up as coming from overseas. I've decided to stop answering unknown numbers altogether. If they really wanted to speak to me they would leave a message asking me to call back. I suspect if I answer them then I'll be added to a list and get even more calls, like giving a seagull a chip and alerting the whole flock. Also I'm avoiding some people atm anyway…

  • One thing sellers or scammers hate are time wasters. So do just that. I also like to make the conversation very awkward. Too bad they keep calling me while I'm at work, busy or driving.

  • I had one from Roy Morgan this arvo. Don't think it was a scam, more market research or survey, but I don't know how they got my number.

Ask your federal MP why more isn’t being done to reign in abuse of our telecommunications infrastructure.

    • There’s a fair bit that is done ie whole government units and programs dedicated to it e.g. Scam Watch, no call register.

Not perfect of course. I’ve had spam texts from all political parties around election time that I’ve apparently consented to somehow - it always makes me less likely to vote for them.

      • It really would not be hard to clamp down on forged CLI and robocallers. Scam Watch is impotent and ACMA is useless.

        • Sounds like you know more about it than the average person. If it’s easy to do, why aren’t they doing it? They have the relevant departments and authority… no?

      • Political parties and charities are exempt from anti spam rules. In fact, political parties can request your details from AEC.

Greens and other minor parties are trying to get rid of that allowance.

  • Always got them, started getting more after Covid. I think my details provided at venues via phone sign on ended up getting sold.

  • I had the tax one last week. I pressed 1 to stop my tax file number being cancelled. Told the person on the other end that he should find a proper job and stop scamming people. Then he hung up.

I always ask them what were they wearing and if they are willing to step on me with heels.

Works like a charm though I dread the day one of them actually likes it.

  • Got a call from the Tax department. Stating that I owe them tax and there is a warrant for my arrest. I was like OK.

  • I got one. Five seconds of music.

    Me: What?
    Guy: I'm (something indecipherable)
    Me: Who are you?
    Guy: I'm the senior manager…

    Click.

Don't speak right away for unknown numbers. Some of those automatic calling systems will hangup if voice is not detected.

  • I've been getting multiple calls a day, mostly from stock/forex/crypto trading companies that seem to think I registered my details. They have my name, mobile and email address.

I believe my details have leaked from the Ledger hack.

However, I also think these companies are a bit dodgy. There are multiple business names with websites, the information is generic and I looked up a couple that seem to have been registered only months ago out of Panama.

  • I've received three calls from (02) 88xx xxxx numbers. When I call back I just get a message that the number I've dialed is not in service.

  • You can register your number not to receive marketing calls that will reduce this substantially https://www.donotcall.gov.au/
Ones that are actual scams not marketing still might call. Mostly when you enter a competition you’re also consenting to them calling but many companies will still not call once you’re on this list to avoid getting fined. Be aware though that it may make you ineligible to win a prize for the same reason.

You would be surprised how many telemarketers don't give a s**t about the DNC register.
When you ask them where they got your number from, they either give you a total BS answer(*) or simply hang up the phone. 🤬

(*) One time I received this answer: "Residential Repository". 🤣

  • I got 2 calls within the hour from Amazon I didn’t engage !!

I can handle the calls on my mobile, I block and move on.

But I think of the elderly with a landline desperate to stay in touch with family so they always answer their phone and these pricks keep ringing them… and I wish the most dreadful retribution for these phone scammers.
