Because people liked wasting money and throwing out plastic because Gillette wrote "Fusion Pro Stealth V12" on pack?

    • Care to share the reason?

      • +4

Because people carve up their faces far more than when using modern wet razors. Remember Norman Gunston?

        • +7

using old school razors becomes like a cult for some people. it's not enough to use them themselves they have to try and talk everyone else into it and hang shit on anyone who doesn't.

        • Part of learning how to best use it I guess

        • +3

These give you a super close shave but when I first started cut the crap out of my face. But works well once you learn. Occasionally still cut up my face.
Benefits are it also doesn't clog up so quickly like disposable razors. Blades are dirt cheap from ebay.

        • +7

I moved to using DE razors a few years ago and noticed less irritation and significantly less ingrowns from the first shave. Haven't looked back since.

          • @XabiFernando: De's are good but straight razors are the best for me.

Started using one a few years back, best thing I've ever done. I use a de every now and then when I cbf, but I hate using one as I get few pimples the next few days.

Something to consider if you have really sensitive skin

          • @XabiFernando: You can eliminate ingrowns by shaving twice, first time with the grain, then immediately after against the grain. I learned this from a professional tonsorialist in Vegas that shaves the stars there. Definitely works.

        • If you carve up your face that's more your fault. Anything can be cut you up if you fail to use the correct technique. At the end of the day it is about finding what works for you and what doesn't.

Personally I find myself using a cut throat, because I am a cheapskate who refuses to spend $20+ on a box of cartridges to last me a month. And I do have very sensitive skin and carts irritate my skin.

        • +1

Norman Gunston used an electric razor.

Multi-million dollar marketing campaigns, run over decades.

I got sick of clogging up multi-blade razors every couple of swipes and them only lasting a couple of days. Tried safety razors and will never go back. Cheaper, longer lasting, don't clog and far less waste.

    • Changes in production methods and consumer habits?

      • people stopped buying them is the change in consumer habits lol

        • True, I was more alluding to the popularisation of disposable products over ones that require maintenance/skill.

    • +5

What’s old is new again. A good safety razor is so much better then any disposable and the blades are cheap as. You’ve no idea with a comment like that

      • time is money

    • +1

      Laziness mainly.

  • +2

Very good for beginners and people that want to try out safety razors

  • +3

Certainly a great way to go (as I have for 10 years). For anyone starting out, the 12 pack of blades aren't terrible at this price. Try and see if safety razors work for you.

If you take to it, get on ebay and buy the multi-packs. The cost per blade should be less than half of these.

    • +3

Even same blades in different handles can behave differently. So it is best to experiment if you do intend to upgrade your handle later on down the track.

  • +2

Blades showing as $7.50 a pack half price, not $5.00

    • Thanks, fixed it

  • These are poor quality, i wouldnt buy them no matter how cheap.

  • +3

These are good if you have the time and experience with them, or want to try them out because of the price.

I tried to like de razors but just didn't work out, tried many different blades too (probably tried the top 7 recommended ones), my stubble is just too thick (I think that was the problem anyway). Watched videos and tried all the tips and tricks to no avail.

I now mainly use Schick hydro and each cartridge lasts me a month or more (only shave every 5-7 days). Recently bought the bic hybrid 3 for very cheap, works pretty well but not sure how long cartridges last.

    • same. i shave my head as well as my face and i gave DE a good try but it's not for me. i still use my badger brush and proraso but with aldi multi blade disposables.

    • Ah that's a shame to hear, was the one you had a open comb design? They're way better for thick stubbles.

  • +1

these are fantastic, saves me a ton of money and good for the environment. the only complaint is that it becomes loose as i turn around my jaw. other safety razors open from top and clip to the side, this one screws tight from the bottom. so as i move from my cheeks down to my neck, it sometimes turns and becomes loose. other than that, its been great!

    • Yeah maybe look into a different one, mine has the one screw from the bottom design (they're called a 3 piece safety razor), and it has never loosened during use.

This one is fine to get into using safety razors, but if it loosens during use, just sounds like is not that great.

    • +1

You could try putting an 'O' ring between the handle and the blade holder to prevent it from becoming loose, or a more convenient option would be to wrap a bit of teflon tape (the kind used on faucets or taps) to hold it still

  • Anyone have any experience shaving their head with these? I've seen above that people slice their faces up, don't really want that on my dome if that's the case.

    • I've not shaved my head but I have shaved my knee and the razor close to bone experience isn't the most comfy, even though I overall love my safety razor.

      • At the end of the day I suppose it's only $10, may as well give it a shot. Cheers

  • +2

DE safety razors FTW. Invest in a sampler pack of like 5-10 different brand/type blades though, some will be better for your skin than others.

E.G. - I like Lord blades for my skin, whereas Feather blades cut me up like a mofo. Gillette are ok but nothing special.

    • +1

Yeah Feather is sharp as. I like Lords too but only use Wilkinson sword from India now, they're like the cheapest blades out there and worked very well for me.

  • I pluck my beard. Lasts about 1month

    • How long does that take you?

      • +13

        about 1month

  • These blades are a rip off. For $9 you can get 50 Derby branded blades delivered. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Derby-Extra-Double-Edge-Blades-5…

  • Are these shavers a cut above the rest?

  • +2

Imagine having a bitch on Ozbargain of all places about people who use safety razors and not knowing is far cheaper. Wtf happened to the Ozbargain spirit.

    • +1

Some are here for cost saving. Some are here to find ways to spend money.

    • Shills and muppets.

Had someone arguing that using non-google search engines makes you a hipster.

Not much of a stretch to see people hating on safety razors for the same thing.

It's down to posting Amazon automated price matching.

      • -1

        Cool story bro

  • I cut myself far less with these type than with the Gillette mach 5 ones.

  • I'll give this a try. I've got eczema and the electric and disposable ones really irritates the skin, hopefully this helps.

  • The razor was still full price in Marden, S.A. this morning.

  • Also available at Coles is the King C Gillette Double Edge Razor+5ct for $21

Not that I can find any info if its the cheapest, but at Amazon.com it was around $30+.
