      Not as good as mayvers….

      Yeah right

      • -1

Yeah he is right, mayvers at least twice as good.

      • I tried Mayvers and wasn’t a fan. Skippy is still my favorite

      • +4

Yeah he is right, Pics is not as good - it's much better.

    • +1

Pics is much better, if same price it’s a no brained

      • +1

Which it never is, so it's a pointless comparison.

Cambodia Jasmine rice, believe it was from Thailand a couple of years ago. Noticed a quality difference and we stopped buying it.

    • +4

Sunrice Jasmine Rice from supermarket switched from being made in Australia to Cambodia in late 2018.

    • the cambo jasmine is even better bruh

    • Made in New Zealand from 100% Australian Ingredients

No it's not I have a jar in front of me right now and its down to 50% Australian ingredients these days.

    • +2

It's been posted on most deals there was a Australian peanut shortage due to Queensland droughts.

FWIW Bega Simply nuts is 100% Australian and tastes the best (IMO) out of the peanut butters without additives (vegetable oil etc.). It doesn't dry out like other 100% peanut butter varieties do (I.e. Mayvers & Pics).

      • I like the taste, but it's so runny you could drink it.

        • Haha you're not wrong. I give it a good stir with a knife on first opening, and then when using jab the knife into center and pull it out, gets a good mix of consistency

        • +1

Any of the non-garbage-filled PBs are going to need stirring.

          • @mickeyjuiceman: Yes I understand. Just saying that it's super runny compared to the others.

    • Oh, I went off the product image/label on Woolworths Product Page.

  • I don't get it. they grow the peanuts here, then ship them to NZ to make it and then ship it back here in a jar. no wonder peanut butter is so expensive.

    • +3

Wait until you hear that 90% of your cereals, muesli and muesli bars are also made in NZ from Australian ingredients. NZ really embraced food tech production right at the point when the Australian Government sold out on all local manufacturing.

    • Sad that AU manufacturing is getting less and less. Would rather buy NZ made products than certain other countries where a lot of our products come from!

      • I'd rather not buy NZ products. they are a back door for China. it may say made in NZ, but a lot of the produce is coming via china.
        i prefer grown/made in australia.

Not made in Australia - no thanks. I'll stick to Mayvers which is Australian made.

    • Good job screwing those Kingaroy peanut farmers, Mayvers is now made with 0% Australian ingredients

      • Pic's is also near zero, they just don't publicise it as clearly. The entire Australian peanut industry was destroyed during the drought.

Pic's are moving towards 0% Australian peanuts in four years as a goal.

By all means buy Pic's if you want to invest in the New Zealand peanut industry.

        • +1

How is 50% near zero? They're transparent about their sourcing, not sure how much clearer you want them to be. Nobody else is giving as much sourcing information as they are. FWIW I don't see a word about where Mayvers is sourcing their nuts from on their website. I see the other link you posted, which I couldn't find from their main page that gives a little more information.

All the materials on Pics website stated they wish to return to using all AU nuts as soon as possible. It appears they want more security given the challenges of sourcing nuts, so they're investing in local farming, but it states in the very article you linked that it's to bolster supply in addition to the AU nuts. Nowhere in that link did it state they want to move to 0% AU nuts as a goal as you claimed.

          • @ethan961: You don't start a full productive farm, with government investment, that requires a four year lead on the idea that a second covid will put a strain on your peanut butter business lol. Here's a better source, maybe, but I imagine you'll just perpetually shift the goalposts.

The founder of Pic’s Peanut Butter hopes to produce a 100 per cent New Zealand-made product, if peanut cultivation trials in Northland prove successful.

“It has always felt a little weird to be making an iconic New Zealand product with imported ingredients,” said Pic’s Peanut Butter owner Pic Picot.

MPI investment programmes director Steve Penno said MPI was excited to be involved in a project that could lead to a new industry in New Zealand and help boost the local Northland economy.

Pic’s spent around $10 million a year importing nuts, mostly from Australia and the opportunity to spend that money in New Zealand was “fantastic”, Picot said.

Products with New Zealand origin were worth a lot in the international marketplace, and a peanut butter product with total New Zealand provenance was likely to be attractive abroad, Picot said.

Hopefully that helps clear up any doubt that Pic's "wish to return to using all AU nuts as soon as possible."

            • @ausmechkeyboards: Thank you for that source, that does a much better job at explaining their new position. Their material has in the past indicated they wished to return to using AU nuts, and the link you posted previously is much more modest, given the early stages that project is in, and with only $91k combined investment.

    • made with South American peanuts, doesnt tast anywhere near as good as the Aussie peanuts they used before. I suppose South American peanuts are much cheaper for them to source = greater profits.

      • +3

There are barely any Australian peanuts and there won't be for another three years - the drought basically ended it.

Mayver's bought literally all of it and will return back to buying Australian peanuts as soon as it can. Pic's on the other hand is developing a domestic peanut industry to avoid buying Australian peanuts in the future.

        • Well I doubt thats true since Bega (the largest peanut butter maker in Australia) has had their simply nuts range for quite some time now and still use 100% Aussie Peanuts. How are they able to and continue to source Aussie peanuts?

I think companies like Mayvers and possibly Pics have realised buying peanuts overseas = greater margins, why would they bother buying Aussie peanuts again?

          • @Stevecro: Are you sure? This article says 80% was imported and the Bega website also says otherwise: https://begapeanutbutter.com.au/faqs/

Where do the peanuts in Bega Peanut Butter come from?
We make it a priority to source Australian ingredients where possible, including our nuts! Australian peanuts are in extremely short supply so we are working hard with our Aussie farmers to help increase peanut production.
Our most popular Peanut Butter contains at least 85% peanuts which are sourced from Australia and Argentina.

Considering Australian peanut crop yield is at 10% of what it was two years ago and Bega is a juggernaut of a company, it's likely that Bega has the contractual and good will to be able to secure crops that would be out of reach of Mayver's hands.

      • Thought the ad on their bottle used to explain that they had chosen to use 100% Australian peanuts because their founder tried peanuts from all over the world but nothing tasted anywhere close to those from Kingaroy.

Just wonder what the story says now…
