Decent price, but Buffalo Trace in Australia is a rort. It's only 40% ABV, whereas in the US it's 45% - makes a massive difference in flavour etc, and makes it watery and insipid - but they claim it's the same thing (award winning bourbon etc). There's no way they would sell it like this in the US, but happy to do so in Australia.

Same situation with Maker's Mark. I think it's 46% in US but 40% in AU. Then you have Maker's 46 which is sold as a premium, but I think it's more or less just the same as regular Maker's in the US.

It is definitely tax related as the excise is by volume of alcohol, so they get away with a "full" 40% even though really, it's watered down.

Yeah, exactly. Woodford the same. However Wild Turkey 101 is 50% but remains fairly cheap - and is a similar price to some of these other bourbons in the US. I think they just assume Australians won't notice or care, so look to save a bit. I was over in the US last year and went to Woodford - noone in the distillery had any idea they watered it down for Australia, and were really surprised and seemingly disappointed.

Makers 46 for $60 is value when the deal is around.

      • It's watered down at 46% too (cask strength will be in the 60% range), but agreed it's shitty marketing.

    • Not that I didn't believe you but I had to look this up. You are correct. You can buy the direct import 45% here but it's obviously much more expensive. Have you tried both? Edit - just read the other replies. Nevermind. You probably have tried both and other bourbons too.

    One word…. Blanton's

    • Two words…. Available nowhere.

    • I think Blanton's has just started selling in the US. Bizarrely, it wasn't generally available in the US, only to export markets. However, that's changed, so I think the days of this being available and on special at Dan's is long gone.

Edit: This was $64 last year at Dan's, now listed for $94 and sold out.

Blanton's is/was by far my favourite bourbon for neat drinking

  • Straight after a big mention and promo on the Joe Rogan podcast. A global marketing push maybe.

I wish there was still some stock of Evan Williams Single Barrel about. DM's home delivery had some but they're out of stock. I think Bulleit is the next on my list for reasonably priced good bourbon.

Give Eagle Rare 10 a go if you havent tried it yet. The best tasting straight bourbon i have tried under $100

      • Got it from DM's for $80 today, thanks for the tip. If Evan Williams Single Barrel ever becomes available again, give it a try. I think it's smoother.

  • Damn just bought it for $55 a week ago! But maybe I can get another bottle…

    • you 100% should.

    • Get 2 for close $100

  • Been wanting to try this since I'm always listening to Joe Rogan bang on about it, but after reading these comments maybe I'll give it a miss
