3 things to be aware of:
- 3 year term (most other discounts out there are 2 year term)
- only applies if pay on time
- only applies to the usage part of your bill (as opposed to the ongoing connection fee part of the bill), which, depending on your circumstances, may only be half your bill (ie, effectively a 6% discount)

• +1

connection fee contributes more then 50% of my bill…..

• 12% off on usage is not a big saving at all. Originenergy's 1 month free after 12 months suit me better.

• Are you sure 1 month free after 12 months is better? If you assume even spending throughout your 12 months, your discount works out to less than 9%

• It's 9% off the WHOLE YEAR BILL which is far better than 12% off USAGE.
See the difference?

• Totally agreed. For people have low usage like myself, a smaller discount on the total bill is usually dearer than a larger discount on the usage.

• Now that you SHOW it, I SEE it.

• also Australian Power & Gas don't have a good reputation. Many people had issues with them before

• +2

What were these issues? Care to give evidence and reasoning instead of just coming out with a statement like that?

• Agree with shaw. I found there are more issues when you switch to 3rd party company (normally they offer you 5% discount on your bills). eg Billing issue, customer service line based in other country…etc

• Well we signed over to them about 4 months ago for electricity and gas when we moved into a new unit. Received a bill a few weeks ago for over $1000k which was very scary, we're normally around the $300-$400 mark. Examining the bill we realised we had been charged for 3 different meters so I called them up to explain the situation and to begin with all they wanted to do was "help me understand ways to bring my electricity usage down in order to lower the cost" until I finally got them to realise it was their issue. They said they had to swap us over to another provider and then swap us back again in order to reestablish the account correctly, and I had to physically go and find the meter box in the building, find the one which relates to our unit and take down the ID number to give them.
I then asked well what about gas, and they said they had no record that we had gas with them and I patiently explained yet again that we had swapped both over. They said in that case it must be fine.

Had a call a week later that they needed me to go and find the individual gas meter for our unit which I couldn't do at the time (little ones were napping). I got the number, checked it and called back a few days later. Gave them the number and was told that since I was only a signatory on the account (it's in my husbands name) they couldn't do anything as it involved opening a new account - was only allowed to be done by my husband. I explained the situation yet again, that we had been with them for months, it was not a new account technically and he basically didn't want a bar of talking to me.

I asked if he could check whether the electricity had been resolved. He looked it up and said it all looks fine. I asked what was owing and he sad the next billing cycle is not until February so just wait for the bill.

I would swap to another company, but we're planning on moving in February, so we'll just stick it out in the mess till then. Fingers crossed we don't get disconnected in the meantime due to their stuff ups.

• AGL had the highest number of customer complaints to the QLD energy ombudsman in 2010 according to a front page thing in one of the newspapers (CourierMail or Gold Coast Bulletin) earlier this year.

I believe Origin had the lowest number.

I havent tried either of them so cant speak from experience… and I dont think Ive spoken to my retailer in the 4 years since moving here.

i personally hate the guy running one big switch (lachlan harris). He is making good money off this I'm sure.
Having heard him talk, seems like a right hand, half fisted perpetually moving back and forth to me

• If you pay less in the end, why hate a guy for making money? Good luck to him.

• Im with these guys, they usually offer a credit on your bills as well eg couple hundred a year when you pay on time, there rate wasnt that bad, and i can break contract if i find a cheaper provider and can prove it with no fees…

• Can you put QLD and NSW only in the title.

• +1

I applied to switch from AGL to AP&G, which prompted AGL to ring me and offer me a 15% discount if I stayed with them.

• I would like to know a little more onthe 15% - is this 15% total bill? Does this include gas and electricity? Do you need pay bills on time to get the discount?

• +1

Beware. These guys are brokers. Just like the one you see on tv day & night about comparing energy prices.
These people get a commisions from the providers.
I have a discount more than 12%, if you talk to the provider they will give you a better discount.

• +1

This is my standard discount for Gas and electricity with the company I'm with. When I initially signed up I got 20% off. Nothing bargain-worthy to see here folks.

• +1

Which provider are you with? Is the 20% discount on the total bill?

• +1

Never seen 20% discount anywhere. May be the rates are much higher.
Curious to know your provider.

• +1

I'm with Simply Energy. The 20% off was total bill, and was a promotion they were running when I moved several months ago, but was only for first bill. Rest of my bills are now 12%.

• Simply Energy …"provide energy in Victoria and South Australia."

• Thanks, their rates is better than mine. Has simply energy done their yearly rate hike? I got my Energy Australia rate hike notice last month so I am thinking of changing to them if their current rates include the price rise too.

• When there's solar connected, I think the rates are fixed by the distributor across all retailers.

• +2

Click Energy is much better IMHO. Used them for a year and managed a relocation without a problem.

7% discount on total bill for CC before due date.
9% discount on total bill for direct debit.
$100 off first bill

• I was tempted to sign up with Australian power and gas earlier this year. When I ring their customer service, the girl was very very rude. If I have to sign up for 3 years and dealing with them doesn't matter what sort of discount they offer I'm not going for it.( by the way, don't just look at the rate, look at the supply charge too)
