That product is an entirely different composition (alcohol and acetic acid) which is designed for a different purpose: to remove water from ears in which it has already been trapped. As such, it is applied after the problem has occurred, rather than helping to prevent it. Our product is applied before exposure to water, not afterwards.

Moreover, a combination of acetic acid and alcohol will cause the delicate skin of the inner ear to become very dry with prolonged use and with many people will cause the skin to crack and become even more susceptible to infection. This is especially true with the very young and the elderly. The formulation we use will protect the skin from that effect.

      • Where is the product made and owned?

        • Hello Mr Bombastic

Both SwimSeal and SurfSeal are made in South Africa and the UK to accredited pharmaceutical standards. The Company is South African owned and the products are supplied to consumers through our Australian subsidiary.

    • Hello PainToad, that made me laugh as we do have a design like that. I will add your vote next time we discuss our packaging!

So this prevents ear ache but not water coming in to the ears?

Anyone got any decent ear plug recommendations for swimming ?

    • Yes, just a couple of drops in each ear before surfing or swimming form a water-repellent coating which means water doesn't become trapped. Make sure you feel the drops go down inside the inner ear canal before going into the water. The best way is to tilt your head to each side and the drops will run straight down to where they are needed.

The Australian tea tree oil we use as part of the formulation is there to deal with whatever nasties might be in the seawater.

A lot of people dislike using ear plugs for a whole host of reasons, including the effect on hearing and balance - plus they do have a tendency to go missing.

Having had three 'surfers ear'/exostosis operations I have unfortunately a fair amount of experience with this problem. I have worn all sorts of ear plugs over the year but still require the operation. Lately I have used blue tack based on a mates recommendation. Doc pro plugs seem quite popular. Try the surfing forum websites to get more information.I am happy to give this a go as nothing else seems to work apart from being out of the water in the colder months which is not an option.

Would be great to get your feedback after a bit of use

    • Hello Parko,

We were motivated to offer SurfSeal to the same formula as SwimSeal - but in a bigger and more economical bottle - through the feedback of many surfers who have suffered painful exostosis surgery and found that our drops helped them. The South African surfing magazine Zigzag are partnering us with this and we all look forward to receiving feedback from as many users as possible.

I have tried this all summer as SwimSeal while body surfing and it works well by keeping water out of the ears. No discomfort. I'm pretty sure I have "surfers ear" after many years of surfing and sailing.

  • Hello Ozsave, very glad to hear that SwimSeal has worked for you - SurfSeal will make it more economical if you are a frequent user.
