Buying Art- How to Negotiate

Interested in buying an art piece from a gallery in Sydney CBD, this is an aboriginal art, hand painted, acrylic on Canvas. Its listed online (~AUD 1000; size 100cms X 100cms) with free worldwide shipping. So, my questions are
• How much of a discount I can get, if I am happy to pick it up from the store (so no shipping)?
• How much can these store discount these pieces?

thanks.

  • Well, it is $100 pick-up…

    Are you sending it Overseas?

    If not, make an offer.

A Gallery needs to make money from the sale and they pass the rest back to the Artist that has to cover their time, materials, expertise and framing and delivery to the Gallery costs.

Is the artwork genuine (ie. Hand painted by an indigenous artist)? Do they provide proof?

    • +1

Yes, it’s a genuine hand painted with pictures of the artist, and online it says they provide proof.

Why did someone neg this? There was heaps of fake aboriginal art being sold a few years ago.

  • Call up and ask.

Buy them a coffee, wait to they tick a sip, offer them half and then calculate the discount by how much they spit on to you.

Wear a turtleneck, have an asymmetrical haircut, avoid eye contact. Throw a few French words into what little conversation you have, like tre chic and avant garde. If you can, find Will Ferrell's poodle from Zoolander to accompany you. You want them to fear you.

Or maybe they'll lick their lips at having finally found such a comically vain person to sell art to.

They have some for 30-50% off, so it might depend how long it has been available.

    Q: Is this an art?
    A: No.
    Q: Gimme discount.

    or

    Q: Is this an art?
    A: Why, yes, it is!
    Q: Gimme discount.

  • I’ve got indige heritage, I could make you an aboriginal art for 80% less than the one you’re currently looking at, can’t guarantee you or too many others would like looking at what I make though.

There’s probably a reason why this piece has a higher price tag, it’s because it’s actually good.

If you like the work of the artist, with a bit of research it might, with emphasis on might, be possible to contact the artist direct and purchase an unshown piece or get a piece commissioned for less than the gallery price, plus that way all the money will also go to the artist.

It can often be as simple as "I like that item, but I've seen some other similar pieces priced around $xxxx … I'm wondering if you might be able to sharpen the price for me?"

Artwork quantity < 10 doesn’t qualify as OzB.
