Tempting! I need about 4 more this month. I'll have to pass as I've got something to sort out :(

    Thanks for finding it though

    • Converting your video collection to 4K?

OzBargain has become 'it has been a while so doesn't matter about not being near the lowest price'. Geez, I would have thought we've got Google for that.

    • +7

Maybe some people missed out previously and need it now. That's the price to pay for urgent purchases. Besides, 25 dollars per TB is a good price for regardless.

Last deal I bought was $338.
It was massively more expensive for quite a while.
$350 is still a deal even though it's not the best deal ever.

arbiter….lol. this kind of information is important to a true ozbargainer :) Thanks JF

        • +1

you replied to the wrong person but I'll stop being a sarcastic git and simply say that this stuff legitimately is worth posting for the simple reason that it's a LOT cheaper than it's usually available for anywhere else.

this reminds me of the silly "This isn't OzRRP!" BS.

Gosh, I didn't realise you were the arbiter here

My house was a lot cheaper when I bought it in the ‘90s. Doesn’t mean that there aren’t bargain houses, now, even if they cost more than my place did. If it is the cheapest you can buy, now, it is a bargain. You can’t buy what isn’t offered.

some ozbargainers seem to think they have access to time machines so they can always get an item for the cheapest price ever.. not just when it is offered. Nice summation @try2bhelpful

They were $299 around black friday weren't they?

    • +1

      They were! I bought 2

I think I picked some up for $314, not sure if there was another cheaper deal.

Price has varied a bit between $300-400. The BF was limited to 3 drives - may not be quite enough if you're wanting to build a fresh NAS

      • I've got 24 drives to buy when the time is right, so no kidding. ;)

        • Set an alert on CCC and enter the amount you're prepared to buy, it'll send you an email when or if it ever drops to that price.

          • @BargainKen: Excellent! Thank you so much. I'm a long way from needing 444TB of storage (currently @ 80 and haven't filled it) but I legitimately have 26 empty drive bays ready to go. I might just buy 3-4 drives a month for a while and fill them slowly.

            • @Zorlin: Why would you ever need that much storage? You'll probably lose about a drive every month or so with an array that large.

@[Deactivated]: Supercomputing at home on a tiny scale. Astronomy. Collections of very large amounts of legally free content (see my thread on riff.cc). That's a small slice of what I do.

And yes, that's why I have erasure coded storage that is stupid reliable and can lose two disks at any time without data loss. And I can increase that to pretty much any number as long as I'm willing to spend the resources.

                • @Zorlin: Seagate have said they expect to release a 24TB HAMR drive this year, so it will be interesting to see how prices change this year.

              • @[Deactivated]: I'll disgust you by saying I now have 75 disk slots, which if filled with 18TB disks would cost me a minimum of $30,000 AUD, and would provide 1.35PB of storage.

          • @BargainKen: What’s CCC?

        • Supermicro or Norco or Chenbro?

          • @daitro: Neither. NetApp, Kobol Helios64, HardKernel HC2/HC4 and disgusting amounts of NUCs.

            • @Zorlin: I've recently started looking at HDD to upgrade my synology NAS, i need 8 drives.

              • @Aarent: These drives are totally recommended, at least me

    It's back to 429$

  • Comes up as $429.

  • why would you need that much porn

    • Ur u/n answers all!

  • Shuck?

    • It’s a good candidate for shucking.

Absolutely. I've got 4. They're helium filled as far as we know, dead quiet and chew about as much power as a tiny fart.

There's a few from their US store for $377

  • these drives are detected as spinning at 5400 by benchmark utilities, but some threads online (reddit maybe ?) are saying they are actually much faster and closer to 7200: the forum posts adequately & convincingly explain this apparent contradiction in the stated/detected speed
(unfortunately i don't remember any of the explanation myself, and can't share that)

EDIT: just remembered it was through sonic spectrum analysis; the various spindle speeds register as very specific frequencies and these drives have the telltale spike of a 7200
