hmmm I bought this 2 weeks ago and I am not keen to keep it

it's way too slow even with performance mode turned on. maybe Android 11 update killed it who knows

    • Does it do the basics ok? Need to buy a new phone for my Dad today.

      • +7

Yes, i would say so. It has a habit of killing tasks (if i am playing Pokemon Go and switch to my music player to skip a song for 10 seconds and then come back to Poke-go it has to reload the whole app - and btw this is with all battery optimisations off and both tasks locked in RAM) but to me it runs fine generally, not too sluggish. The main issue i had is the dodgy proximity sensor but other than that it is reasonable for the price.

That said, i prolly wouldnt buy it again, i would wait for a Xiaomi around the same price if i had my time over even though im not overly disappointed in the Oppo.

      • +7

noticeable lag but it does things alright

starting any app including built in can be a few seconds wait

for me I use MS Teams and Outlook for work and damn this is unusable. most of the time I can't figure out if it finished loading or stuck halfway and I need to tap somewhere to actually see the email or message that arrived - this all was almost instant on iPhone 7 which is a super old phone

let's say I am browsing ozbargain and click a link that leads me to Amazon listing. I can hum through a little tune while Amazon app opens. cod dam this phone is frustrating

        • Yeah I found older flagships are still typically faster than these budget oriented models. My old HTC One m8 still probably runs rings around this phone. It actually surprises me how fast old flagship phones are, especially running a custom rom. Lol

          • @Ronnnie: SD 665 in modern budget phones crushes the SD 801 in the M8, per benchmarks. Custom ROMs aside.

@Fobsessive: It’s usually the software that lets down the hardware. I had a cheap Lumia back in the day and it pretty much still crushes all these newer phones in terms of smoothness of the OS. What really blows my mind is how a phone with such low end hardware still has a vastly superior keyboard than my flagship Android has. It’s a pity nobody has managed to create a keyboard on a phone as good and it only needed a snapdragon 200 to perform better than the snapdragon 888 powered devices. Software wins over hardware. I bet the reason people are complaining because of poor performance with this phone is because the Android 11 update is poorly optimised for this device.

      • +1

I'd say it depends on your Dad.
I bought one for my mum a couple of weeks ago. I think for her use (just basics - phone calls, some browsing, facebook, youtube) this phone has been fine. She is certainly NOT a power user in any shape of form as she and technology really don't mix.

        • Yep mainly calls/sms, Whatsapp & the occassional photo.

Bought one with $5.00 delivery, thanks OP.

          • +2

@WatchNerd: Similar to my mum perhaps….she has been happy enough with her experience with the phone so far. Note though that her previous phone was a now very much aged Moto G4 plus (which seemed good for her still).

          • +1

@WatchNerd: I think your old man will be happy with it. If you have an issue with the proximity sensor (you will know what i mean if you do, calls will be a nightmare) there is software that can resolve the problem.

            • +1

@Iggemo: Hey Iggemo, what software suggestion do you have for this? No complaints from my mum regarding this issue so far, but I'd like to do something mitigate it if possible.

        • +2

Most older people use one app at a time and don't play games which would be fine. It is just people who buy budget phones $200 and expect that to multi task like a $800 phone that is the problem.

    • +9

yeah you can keep downvoting me all you like, I was as excited to get this phone as you, but it just didn't work out for me

      • +4

Thanks for sharing your experience with the phone, that does not deserve a neg vote, so have a plus from me.

        • +2

          thanks mate

      • Thanks for sharing, was so close to buy it for my dad.
Dads these days need a workhorse. Low end phones aint gonna cut it anymore.
Ill prob go with RealMe 7 pro.

        • this phone shattered my faith in budget Android sector and humanity in general

before that I had Lenovo K3 Note, and Xiaomi Mi Max 2, both old sub $200 buys, and both of them were much more usable than this

I suspect Oppo killed A52 with A11 update to make people upgrade, but this is just a guess.

at any rate, mission failed pretty much.

      • Fair call. Thanks for the honest feedback. I was going to pick this up for a gift but won't now.

        • +1

no problem, just helping fellow ozbargain members make a decision

just returned mine for a refund to Officeworks where it came from

          • @shabaka: After how long of usage?

            • @ozhunter68: a bit under 2 weeks. bought it, set it all up, enabled performance mode, then Android 11 update arrived, then it just went downhill from there.

              • @shabaka: What did you say to OW when you returned it?
Did they accept it easily or try and refuse?

                • +1

@WatchNerd: they accepted it without much opposition. I just said it's too damn slow

              • +1

@shabaka: I just said it's too damn slow

  • How would this go transferring from a s10e?

Wife smashed her phone looking for replacement.

    • Samsung Galaxy 10?

    • you can find 2nd-hand s10e for around $500, just buy an otterbox or lifeproof case - what you spend on the case will always be cheaper than the cost of repair

    • I don't think this phone compares well (I've compared my S10 to my mum's Oppo A52). Perhaps fine as a stop gap phone if that is your intention.

  • +3

Man, this phone's reputation went from an odd bunch Kensington Pride Mango to a cursed frozen yoghurt. Based on my life's experience, the negative reviews will apply to me, so I'll be experiencing self-exiting critical apps all over again. As a budget android user since the beginning it's frustrating that my first sub-$100 Android 2.x phones with less than a gig of RAM were more responsive and stable than the ones that came after it.

Can anyone here just destroy Xiaomi's Redmi Note 9 Pro or whatever budget phone is recommended on OzBargain these days so I can move on with my indecisive life?

    • in all fairness it sounds like new android killed whatever performance it has… might get better with future updates

      • The problem with a lot of these cheaper models is future updates may not come. You can't really depend on support at this price.

        • +1

          that's a fair point

          • @whistler: Xiaomi Redmi phones will also get one update. Which in all likelihood will slow down the phone.

Problem with Android in general is updates will slow down the phone.

I am not an Apple user.

            • @netjock: Where did you get this from?

              • +1

@Cheeper: Xiaomi devices usually get one Android version update, but get MIUI updates for four years

                Here

Specifically Redmi Xiaomi (9 mentioned above) will get 1x Android version update and 4x MIU (it is just security and overlay I assume)

                Here

    • +1

Hard to beat Xiaomi so stop trying to find something equal for the $. :-)
My old Redmi Note 5 just had a UI update to MIUI12 along with security updates etc.. and it still works like the day I got it. Battery included. Upgraded recently only because I found a crazy price on a 6/128 Redmi Note 9S and as expected from Xiaomi, it is a brilliant piece of equipment. Still have my first Xiaomi, a RN4 which is still in out of the box condition including the battery.
For the $ they have to be the champs.

    • I have the same experience. What is a good budget phone?

  • I have one of these would not say it is great seems laggy slow response bluetooth is also average.

  • -1

Maybe made for the third world market?

  • Seeing that this phone has lost it's place as the best budget phone. What would you guys recommend now?

    • +1

It's still the best budget phone in the 2020 poll. Currently there is no 2021 poll

      • Ye but judging by the comments above i'd say it's better to look elsewhere now.

        • I guess it depends what you think a budget phone should be capable of.

For me this sounds like it will do the job fine.

      • +4

I've had one for a while now and have no problems with it at all. I think some people are expecting way too much from a $200-250 phone.

        • Looks like users are reporting problems, on the phone, ever since the OS was updated to android 11.

    • +1

i have purchased a lot of cheap junkers, Bluboo, Doogee, Oppo, HTC, Xiaomi, new Nokias, far and away from now on i am only purchasing Xiaomi, all the others have had issues and yet the Xiaomis i have bought for myself and family have all been great.

    • An Xiaomi that has the specs to suit your needs.

    • +2
      • Thanks, bought one for a family member.

Today's research of the Redmi 9 after reading your recommendation brought up the alternative of the slightly more expensive Redmi 9T/Poco M3, but I think the 25% weaker GPU of the SD662 will hinder those phones and make them unusable much earlier, outweighing the benefits of 20% larger battery and stereo speakers.

        • POCO M3 had pretty bad lag issues at launch, not sure if that has been fully fixed yet.

I was planning to get it but after seeing that ended up with the Redmi 9, no regrets.

The 9T i really don't think is worth the extra $40 or so over the 9 unless you really want that extra battery life, but once you start getting into 9T money there are better options out there for a little bit more.

    • You could also consider the Nokia 5.3.

Same processor, ram and storage. A little more expensive but you get Android One (clean Android, guaranteed updates, will get Android 12). Nokia can be a little buggy as well though, but worth considering.

  • Good price, paid 220 at OW two days ago.

  • would OW price match TGG discounted price?

  • Don't forget to go through cashrewards for 5% cash back or shopback for 4.5%.

  • +3

Bought this for $225 from Amazon with free delivery due to prime. Received Android 11 immediately and it got bit slower down but one more reset to factory default made things good. Regular Apps: Phone, email, WhatsApp, Viber, FB and can comment that it runs ok. Good battery and screen but would not call this is a fast phone but for basic usage like above apps so far I'm finding ok. Oh and installed Gcam 7.4 which is giving a good photo experience.

Question is would Amazon give the price difference?

    • is it a good phone for mums and dads?
