  • What’s the different between bluray and UHD?

    • +4

      4k resolution and sometimes HDR.

      • There's also the HD audio options & Atmos for those that can take advantage of it.

    • +2

1080p vs 4kish (lots use an upscaled 2k master).
UHD will sometimes have extra visual features like HDR etc.

      • Worth the price difference in your opinion? Looking at a few 4K UHD music concerts and don’t know wether to just get Blu Ray copies for the PS5 disc player..

        • +3

Depends on the movie. Blade Runner 2049 as an example is worthless as brightness was not improved whatsoever, all they did was add a wider colour range and called it "HDR". Also some movies are mastered in 2k and then have to be upscaled to 4k so thats worthless as well. My TV can upscale instead paying someone to do it for me.

          • +1

            @fuzor:

The "2k" are mastered in is more than 1080p, so the end result is still better than a standard blu-ray.

        • +5

For music/concerts, the 4K resolution is not as important as the audio. In most cases BD and UHD share the same audio tracks so all you're paying for is the upgraded resolution (and sometimes HDR).

Some UHD discs are worth owning but at the average retail price point of AUD$40, it's not worth it. And this is coming from someone who owns 100+ 4K discs. Unless you have a fantastic quality TV and money to waste, stick to blurays.

  • Thanks, OP. Looks like all the recent Star Wars are <$4

    • +8

Strange, they all seem so timeless.

      • +3

Truly masterpieces for the ages, and very much not contemporary politic ridden trash.

        • Mod: <SPOILER ALERT>

Right? I mean how wasn't Rey both a Skywalker and a Palpatine?

          • @Charlie Sierra: Only JJ knows.
            Or Rian?
            Or Kathleen…

Got boxes full of CDs and DVDs I paid a fortune for back in the day that are worthless now. With affordable on-demand streaming I'm not getting sucked into physical media ever again (secondhand games excepted!)

    • +6

      Thanks dad

    • +1

Same. The only physical media I buy now is movies I love and will re-watch. Anything that's only viewed once is for streaming, not for sitting on my shelf or boxes.

      • I definitely agree with this philosophy however because of Disney plus and disneys exclusive crap I have made exceptions for marvel movies especially at this sort of price.
Yes I know I am technically supporting disney but at this price I am sure its minimal and I would prefer the physical media in light of the possibility of these movies being locked in to true exclusivity with disney plus at some point.

I certainly understand where you are coming from, but some people, like myself prefer to watch a true 4k movie on a a quality 4k TV. There is no real 4k streaming at over 80 Mps. With Netflix at under 16 Mps you're getting well under half the quality of a true 4k disc. Not to mention better sound reproduction too. Trust me watch the Revenant on 4K and you will see what I am writing about.

Admittedly the better TV's today do a remarkable job of up-scaling and though the difference is noticeable it isn't dreadful. I have yet to play a DVD on my Pana OLED, so I can not submit any thoughts of the quality of the up-scaling. I too subscribe to Netflix and Prime but my thoughts are if your'e going to spend big bucks on a quality TV, you may as well use all the technology that you paid for.

      • +1

DVD on OLED is fairly minimal upscaling; looks about the same as running on your usual LCD. Blu-Ray usually looks pretty sharp in my experience.

    • +2

If you're collecting physical media with the mentality that it's going to be worth something someday, you're going about it wrong.

      • +4

There are other benefits of buying physical media, namely you can watch what you want when you want. No need to search and hope a movie is there on any of the streaming services. Stan, Netflix etc will constantly change what they show. Also Netflix which now has over 1400 fewer movies than in 2016 many of those to Disney+ which is just another subscription service.

Another reason is with political correctness going the way it is and removing original scenes and dialogue to sanitise the film and make it harmless. Who knows what they will do in the future. They can't change the movie that you bought.

Of course there is the bonus of watching other shows ad free that aren't on disc, some of which are excellent, The Bodyguard series for example. Also whilst doing a search you will find something that you haven't seen for a long time that you can add to your list, download and watch later.

As Blu- Rays have lasted a decade and still going strong, I anticipate the 4K movies I have bought will be great to watch for at least another 10 years, if not 20. By then my failing eyesight wouldn't appreciate the difference. They might not be worth anything to someone else, but to me they they will.

    • I'm not getting sucked into physical media ever again

Fact is, even the very best quality 4K streaming is not as good as even standard 1080p blu-ray, let alone 4k UHD blu-ray.

If you own a TV screen above 40 inches, or a projector, or decent audio system, or an OLED TV, and only stream, most of the money you spent on that hardware is being wasted.

Blu-ray is a big step up in quality. The difference is not subtle. It's a whole other experience.

  • Rogue one gone. Got some others though, thanks OP.

damn amazon. your product images are PHAAAAT

  • Star wars both oos

  • come on iTunes 😁

  • Got new Predator one, also Solo was $4 …

  • Ford vs Ferrari not available..

  • +4

Worth noting guys these may be your last chance to grab some of these on physical media for the foreseeable future. The 'Disney Vault' is quite infamous from the VHS/theatrical re-run days, and by all accounts they're extending this to the 20th Century Fox stable they acquired, creating artificial demand that will be filled by the Disney+/Star subscription service.

If Amazon can fill the backorders you're lucky, but I got an email saying that my Ford vs Ferrari 4K order from the previous deal couldn't be filled and the product had been discontinued. The only copies on Amazon now are $60+ from opportunistic 3rd party sellers.
