The digiDIRECT 20% off sale (with a bazillion exclusions) is almost over - finishes 11:59pm tonight - but I stumbled across a pretty good deal on the Olympus 60mm F/2.8 macro lens. $439.20 seems to be the cheapest it has appeared on OzBargain with the exception of a pricing error post from August last year.

The next cheapest price seems to be Bonanza Db Shop (never heard of them before) @ $495, then Camera Warehouse @ $515. Previous cheapest on OzBargain seems to be $451 from April last year. Cheapest this has been on Amazon, according to the three camels, is $463.30 - it's currently over $600.

I didn't buy this myself because I couldn't justify two purchases… I picked up the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i AI for $580 - it's been between $650 and $700 for a while from digiDIRECT and around $800 in most other places.

  • Good deal for those still shooting m43.
Tbh haven’t touched my m43 rig since I got my a7iii on release…

I love the theory of the extra image quality on a full frame camera, but I just love the fact I can fit my entire Olympus kit (including a bunch of pro lenses) into a small backpack and hike around in comfort. Even my old APS-C camera and lenses were double the size/weight for the same range of lens options, and full frame would be bigger/heavier again. (The full frame cameras are getting smaller but the lenses not so much.)

      • Canon RP with 24-105 STM weighs just about 880g the whole kit.

e-m5 mkii (m43) I used to carry weighs 469g that's just a few grams lighter than Canon RP (FF) at 485g. also lenses like RF 50 1.8 or 35 1.8 are light and compact.

        just saying.

I sold e-m5 mkii about a year ago and haven't looked back since. m43 has its use case, and I sure enjoyed shooting mine for around 9 months with a variety of optics including portrait 45 1.8. but for what I do I value low light performance and DOF more than proper weather sealing and maybe slightly more compact build of e-m5ii.

        each to his own

        • +2

Yeah sure, it's possible to pair a FF camera with light lenses, but in a like-for-like comparison between systems the m43 system is almost invariably smaller/lighter and quite often (but not always) cheaper.

          E.g.:

          • Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 | 160g | $349 vs Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 | 125g | $259
          • Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 | 305g | $739 vs Olympus 17mm f/1.7 | 120g | $423
          • Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8 | 840g | $3969 vs Panasonic 8-18mm f/2.8-4 | 315g | $1239
          • Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8 | 900g | $3969 vs Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 | 382g | $1400
          • Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 | 700g | $1699 vs Olympus 12-45mm f/4 | 254g | $758
          • Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 | 695g | $2610 vs Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 | 760g | $1559 (so slightly heavier, but longer reach and wider aperture)
          • Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 | 1050g | $1783 vs Olympus 40-150mm f/4-5.6 | 190g | $263
          • Canon RF 85mm f/1.8 | 500g | $1149 vs Olympus 45mm f/1.8 | 116g | $359

I often carry my Oly 12-40 f/2.8, 40-150 f/2.8, Sigma 56mm f/1.4, Pany 25mm f/1.7 and 8-18mm in my backpack and the total weight for that is a little over 2kg. To carry the equivalent in a Canon kit would be about 3.5kg. And I've actually chosen more of the pro-grade lenses so I could further reduce the weight by choosing some of the cheaper, slower lenses.

Like you said, each to his own, though.

          • @tophorus: agreed that for example e-m5ii plus 45 1.8 is a much more compact set and much better kapow/gram or $ spent than equivalent FF plus, say, 85/2

I was very happy with my oly setup, but a few factors made me change systems. maybe if Canon made m43 cameras that would be perfect? oly menu is not for faint hearted. however once set up it just works, just takes a while to get there, and to get used to it.

it all depends on what camera system you started on, too. I started on Canon initially, and I guess it just stuck with me

I remember that feeling when after selling my full frame DSLR and switching to oly kit, the whole kit including body and 3 lenses weighed less than just the DSLR body I got rid of

            • +1

@shabaka: Yeah the Oly menus are pretty diabolical. :)

But the image quality is perfect for what I need and the lens are pretty much universally awesome (my experience so far, anyway).

I started with Pentax, then decided to jump ship to Olympus because Pentax seemed to be dying. Then Olympus announced it was selling its imaging division… sigh. If anybody has a camera company they want to kill off, let me know and I'll buy into their system for you.

M43 is actually a pretty good platform for macro, and this lens - despite a sort of light plastic feeling build - is excellent.

  • Was looking at getting this or the manual 7artisans 60mm which also has good reviews, why is the latter so much heavier at over half a kg versus the olympus which is only 185g with AF and weather sealing?

    • I'm not sure. With weather sealing, autofocus (and the possibility of focus bracketing with a compatible camera) and such good reviews, I'd prefer the Olympus. Some people prefer manual focus of macro, but when a bug on a leaf is blowing backwards and forwards in a breeze, having super-quick AF that locks focus and takes the shot is awesome.

Following the sale of Olympus camera and the exit of Panasonic from the m4/3 format, the future of the format maybe in computation/AI photography via smartphone apps. The smaller sensor is well suited to the task.

Where is the source of that news?

Reading this recent article, it does not look like M43 will disappear anytime soon.

According to Panasonic and OM Digital Solutions Corporation, Micro Four Thirds was the best-selling lens mount type in the Japanese interchangeable lens digital camera market in 2020.
Despite only four new Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens cameras being introduced in 2020, the standard managed to account for a 21.7% share in the Japanese market. This was good enough to make it the top-selling lens mount on the market.

Own this lens, great macro lens with excellent Bokeh. It's also a good occasional portrait lens (but quite tight at 120mm equivalent)

I already have the Sigma 56mm F/1.4 which is an amazing lens with almost the same focal length as the Olympus 60mm macro, but with a wider aperture. It's just a pity it's not a macro! It's hard to justify two lenses so close to each other…

      • I have this and 40-150 pro, but still want the 75mm..

  • Superb lens but I'm thinking of trading it for the Laowa 50mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro. It has electronic coupling so there's aperture control and exif data, but sadly no AF, so you miss out on the focus bracketing. I think the 2x magnification would be worth it though.

    • Is that the crazy looking one with the long tube for going underwater and so on? It looks like something Eric Cartman would have complained about!

      • Haha, no it's a different optic but that's definitely one funky looking lens! For something a little different I actually enjoy using the Oly 8mm f/1.8 fisheye for some wide-angle faux macro type shots. It's not 1:1 but you can focus down to around 1cm from the front glass which really lends itself to some fascinating imagery. I've always been envious of the full frame Laowa 15mm f/4 macro.

    • Wow just looked it up, originally read it as 1:2 and thought the AUD$500 was a weird price tag but then realised it was actually 2:1 double magnification haha

  • This 60mm lens is also ideal for portraits.

    • +1

Ideal for portraits of insects or human.

  • Is the best flash still the stf-8 for macro for this lens?
