GPU Price Is So High?

I recalled Dec 2019 I bought 2x 5700xt for $550 each from deals posted on OZB. I have gifted one and resold one.
AS of now, I have checked, the GPU price is much higher across all retailers; there is also no sales atm.

The new GPU lines are always out of stock and are sold at $800+.

Is there a supply problem in AUS?

Worldwide supply problem, covid, high demand. Those 5700XT's are worth about $800USD on amazon now.

It's the bloody ETC miners fault.

It is like day trading. Everyone making something out of nothing.

mining profits are up a tad, by 1000%, so everyone's jumping on gpu's for that free moolah

    • ETH*

      • ETH PoW is safe. ETC is the one that needs the GPU.

    • There was major shortages before mining ramped up, due to the fact that Nvidia has a shortage of GDDR6X for it's new cards and AMD is using most (80%!) of the 7nm fab capacity it has contracted from TSMC to build console APUs (that is also the reason that Ryzen 5000 series CPUs are also so hard to find).

  • you must have been living under a rock ! hahaha

  • Guessing Bitcoin's also made mining somewhat viable again.

Late last year there was a combo deal for a Gigabyte 3 Fan 5700 XT Gaming OC (a very well reviewed model) with a Razer Mechanical Keyboard for $499 in total.

Was at the checkout within one min of the post, but hesitated for a few minutes to do some more research. Was gone by the time I returned to cart, still sad about that one. Even when supply gets better I think GPU prices will remain crazy until it no longer makes sense to mine with GPUs

Nvidia now plans to nerf the hashrate of some cards but I'm sure miners will find work arounds soon and it'll have little effect

I have regrets not getting that deal :(

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

      1) Buy an expensive GPU and not make a $ off of it, or

      2) Buy an expensive GPU and make $ off of it overnight when you're not using it, power is cheap (off-peak) and temperatures are low.

      Why would anyone choose (1)?

The only winners are Nvidia who are able to sell both "gaming" GPUs that are "bad" for mining and mining specific GPUs with rejected silicon to miners.

      • From current bitcoin and other crypto calculators, it seems to make no sense for an average joe in Australia to use their gaming rig with a shiny new GPU to mine even at night as the off-peak electricity costs are still too high and prevent you from making any profit in this country with such a setup.

So the 2nd option you outlined pretty is only relevant for those in many other countries around the world, not us here

But yes Nvidia are the only winners in this whole situation.

That might have been true for the last few years. Anyone watching crypto or news in general would have noticed Ethereum has skyrocketed and the latest model gpu's earn $10-$15 a day (and cost less than a $1 in power to run overnight)

    You been a coma mate?

  • High they are!

  • You been living 400 fathoms under the sea?

  • I've been "collecting" components from Ozbargain to build a new PC for my son, the only component I am now missing is the GPU - what are my chances of a 3070 coming up for under $1k in the next week?? A few suppliers have them around $12-1,300 but I'd feel really bad scrounging every other component from Ozb then blowing $300 extra of the video card.

    • It does happen, but you've got to be quick.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/604953

Most shop and wholesalers are now keeping cards for their own systems builds now.

    • Why 3070? What CPU and monitor to match? And what games?

    • FWIW, the 3070 can be had for under $1k sometimes on here and around $1100-$1200 easily anywhere any time. Obviously never pay more than $1200 for a 3070.

I agree it's not the best value, but given their MSRP is around $900 it's not even a terrible markup. Also not a terrible deal considering that it's similar performance to a 2080 Ti which was around $1600 - $1700 a year ago (before the COVID supply shortages).

I would argue here I don't believe any child needs a 3070.Especially if the use case doesn't justify it.

3060ti's are pretty close in performance and seem to come through on a much better price-performance point.

It's not my situation (nor yours for that matter) to make value judgements on what someone else wishes to buy. The query was about buying a 3070, so my response was to address that. This a bargain forum, not a parenting forum at the end of the day.

          Good luck buying a 3060 Ti…

        • It's easier to buy a 3070 now, as there's literally Zero 3060Ti's around.

I just seen someone trying to sell a 1070 for $650…. Some people are just taking the piss or are completely clueless.

  • Got a 3080 evga ultra last year for close to 1300… I think that is cheap nowadays!

  • Got a EVGA rtx 3080 gaming oc last December for $1265. I'm thinking that was a bargain.

its official au goverment policy to make tech more expensive. there is no argument about this.

    • i'm getting negged for a liberal policy success - u just can't win….

  • I bought a 1660S from CCPU a month ago, have a look at this. https://i.ibb.co/Mh2H1nG/ccpu.jpg

  • I sold my ingame gold and got like ~ 1000. I'm thinking about the powercolour 6700xt from PC case gear. Any review?
I read that 3070 is better, but it's very expensive

  • Wow, just going back to my post buying 1660S for $365 in Jan 2021, they are selling second hand on Ebay for about $550 now.
