    CL22 btw

Go on, take one for the team

This is a good deal if you need a lot of capacity, but CL22 is definitely really slow.

Using a latency calculator, the latency on 3200 MHz CL22 is 13.75ns, which is actually slower than the latency on 2400 MHz CL16, which is 13.33ns.

If you want to try your hand at OC'ing, you might be able to get 3200 MHz CL18, which would be reasonable or even CL16 if you're lucky. Might also be worth seeing if 3600 MHz CL18 is possible, but overall the high density modules are very finicky to OC.

The good news is that it seems to be stock 1.2V, so if you wanted to run them at 1.5V, you could probably get the OC going.

    • Your first sentence for me was it. Capacity.

My little backup esxi host is an old itx system, with obviously limited to two memory slots. This will be perfect for that. Latency won't be an issue in my case.

    • How much of a real world performance difference can you actually see? As in less FPS in games, longer encoding times in Premiere etc?

      • +2

Probably about 10-15 FPS maximum compared to top tier RAM, when paired with a CPU that benefits from faster RAM.

          lol

the latency on 3200 MHz CL22 is 13.75ns

Oh no.. whats that equate to - 1/1000th of a sneeze? :)

      • +2

That's a long time in computer terms.

  • When would it be preferable to choose this over, say, a 2x16gb set with lower latency?

    • +1

When you would need to process a large amount of data, with two such sets you can have a total of 128GB installed.

Doesn't take many vms to quickly eat into 64gig, all depends on what you are doing…

      • how much RAM and cores do you give to each VM?

        • Really depends on the vm workload.

    • +7

      No, it's not.

      For your use case maybe.

Have you even used more than 1 tab when browsing? Tabs eat memory.

      • +1

1GB for each tab sounds about right.

    • +1

I've got 1000 Chrome tabs opens though.

    • +11

      That's only in your case.

I'm in Automation Engineering, not uncommon for me to have 4 or more VMs at one time.

Some one else might need to run mass database query and want them all to be loaded in memory.
And some one again might do nothing but office and need only 8gig…

Turns out people need different things for different applications. Funny that.

      I work in IT

Doesn't know how to reply to someone's post

    • Going to run Cisco ISE, or a vSRX in a docker? No, i didnt think so.

Docker has its place, so do VM's.

  • CL22 seems to be quite slow, I have bought 2x32 3200 CL16 for 280$ from Newegg before. But the price is quite low, certainly a deal.

  • What are we even debating here for guys? This obviously ain't for everyone. Just because it's cheap, doesn't mean you should ozbargain it.

Been up at this price for roughly a month. Guess it's their viral moment.

Good to have a cheap option for those wanting to stick to JEDEC specs, but one oddity is their SPD seems to be missing timings for 2933 (official spec for 10th gen i7/i9) - it has 2666 and 3200. So if you stick to spec and run at 2933, I assume you get the looser 3200 timings.

I have the 2x16GB kit of this and was able to get it run on X570 at 3733Mhz with the same timings at 1.35V.
The main point of this RAM I guess is that you can run this at 3200Mhz at the base spec of 1.2V. Which might be handy for some people.

64g ram is a waste for 99% users, which means whoever sees this post doesn’t need it. I bet those talked about vm aren’t even in a role using it. Talk big talk about outer space to Elon musk as you like.

  • Update on this kit. 2700x with x570 msi meg ace and running a rx 5600xt and quadro p2000 with corsair hx750.

Couldn't get it to run on 3200 C22 stable, was hit and miss on boot, sometimes freezes. Tried ramping voltage to 1.45V for dram but wasn't stable enough. Other users using zen2 or later should be fine. it's micron die with dual rank

Running at 2666mhz at C18 stable at 1.3. The larger capacity is much more worth than speed. My old kit was a 32gb 2400c15 that i had clocked to 3200c15.

odd note: had to boot into safe mode and ddu graphics driver to prevent windows from freezing when i installed the new ram. Then i just reinstall graphics driver after.
