Philips 3D Blu-Ray BDP5200/79 with Built-in Wi-Fi $118.40 (was $149)

130

This was posted recently to OzBargain for $149. That deal is now marked expired, but it is now even cheaper, at $118.40. Shipping is $9.95, but "click and collect" is also available.

You can get plain Bluray players for much less, but the cheapest 3D player I could find on staticice was over $250, though I've seen 3d players for around $150 elsewhere. Google player found a cheaper player ($111) from overstock.com, but that needs a 110v power source, isn't new, and ships from the US.

It doesn't appear to have wifi, but has a network connection etc.

if it's the 5200 model, then it is WiFi..
I finally got to open my xmas pressie up last night and set it up
very quick setup for wifi and settings.. menu is great
and net tv is built in..
and it connects to my Anynet+ on my Samsung TV so it's great
the usb plays all the files i put through it so far

not bad.. but my wife paid $129 for it 2 weeks ago..
so this is a great price for a 3D model in deed

    • Have you tried the DVD upscaling on this? Does it compare well to a good Sony or Panasonic unit?

    • I too have a Sammy TV (3D LCD). What advantages is the Anynet+? I connect everything up to an amp so is there any benefit? Do u need 1.4 hdmi cables for 3D? Or is it just bull what the salesperson say?

  • Wow, nice price for a good piece of tech!

It does have wifi. It is suppose to support USB keyboard as well, but I cannot seem to get it to work (could be my USB keyboard).

    The good bits:

    • Price. $118.40 for a Blu-Ray 3D player with Wifi-N (single band support)
    • The USB playback format support is decent for a Blu-Ray player: mkv, avi.. and also rmvb.
    • NetTV and DLNA support.
    • Reasonably quiet.

    The not so good bits:

    • Pressing buttons on remote might need a bit of force at times (for the player to receive the signal properly).
    • DLNA support can be problematic (keeps getting server timeout errors).
    • Wifi range is rather average.
    • Picky when reading BD-R DL Discs (made in Japan ones) compared to el-cheapo, no name brand players.
    • Unable to manually select 1080p@50Hz or 1080p@60Hz (only 1080p Auto) - so if you have a dodgy Kogan TV which cannot handle 1080p@60Hz properly (and yet the dodgy TV keeps informing your Blu-Ray player to send 1080p@60Hz in Auto mode), then the workaround is to use 1080p/24fps - shouldn't be an issue if you have a proper brand TV.

Overall, quite good value for money.

  • I purchased the Philips Blu Ray 5.1 home theatre system from dick smith for $159.20…can't go wrong!

    • That looks like a good deal, but I don't see anything saying it can play 3D movies. Can it play 3D movies? If so, I'd prefer it over the $118.40 one.

  • Good price for 3D!

For those interested, I bought a Non-3D Philips Blu-ray player yesterday from Dick Smith for $63.20. The model is BDP3200. This was from Warringah Mall.

Probably should have bought the 3D model for $118.40!!

  • Sorry for a stupid question, since theres wifi can i browse internet or watch utube with this player but non wifi lcd tv? Ta.

    • Connected through your network it's the interface with the 'net (youtube, etc.). Any TV you connect will display internet content.

      • Thanx for reply. Sorry for another question. How do we browse the web? Any browser can be used thru this player? Thanx

    • once you are connected to the network, go to Net TV and there is a dedicated You Tube app, haven't used it myself, but saw it there last night when playing with the settings

    • It does come with a browser (in NetTV). However, the browser does not support Flash. To play YouTube, you need to use the YouTube app.

You really need to get the USB keyboard to work (if you intend to use the browser). Using the remote to enter the URL is not pleasant. Not sure about the iPhone remote app. Maybe that app. will help.

  • How does it go playing mp4?

    • Claims to support the formats below. I guess there'd be some obscure encodes that wouldn't work like most of these players.

      Playback Formats
Video: DivX Plus™ HD, MKV, H.264, VC-1, MPEG2, XviD, AVCHD and WMV – Photo: JPEG – Sound: DTS, Dolby Digital, AAC (multi-channels), MP3, PCM and WMA.

      • Can play avi definitely yea?

        • AVI works (DivX, Xdiv).

  • Also bought the cheaper non-3D Philips BDP-3200 player from Dick Smith. Planning to try streaming Blu-Ray movies from a network storage drive via an Ethernet cable to this player, but not sure if it will work? So does anyone know if this higher model BDP-5200 support this method of streaming Blu-Ray movies?

    • 3200 is not DNLA compliant. Can only play via USB device attached.

      • Oh ok, thanks. Sounds like I will have to play MKV video from an external USB hard drive.

  • Anyone know if this supports ipods, iphone and android devices (ie to control the bd player with the phone, device)?

    • Yes, there is an Android app called MyRemote that lists this the 5200. My son tells me there is also an Ipod version. Also, the Sony Tablet works better as a remote than the included remote.

  • BTW, I just found out that the playstation 3 to can also do 3D. So if you already have a Playstation 3 you can get a 3D bluray player for $0 :) Also, looking on ebay, it seems you can get a used PS3 for about $220, so you might want to hold off if you are thinking of getting a PS3.

    • does it really play 3d on the ps3??

      • "YES"

  • @timmy_tam I don't have a PS3 myself, but many websites such as Engadget report that an update to the PS3 allows it to play 3D movies.

  • I too have a Sammy TV (3D LCD). What advantages is the Anynet+? I connect everything up to an amp so is there any benefit? Do u need 1.4 hdmi cables for 3D? Or is it just bull what the salesperson say?
Does it support iphones, android phones etc?

  • Bought this online to collect from a store. Took it home and plugged it in but could not get it turn on. Had to take it back to Dick Smith who exchanged it without too much hassle. Second unit works like a dream!

Note, Wifi has short range. Has a front USB slot and a rear SD card slot. No HDMI, coaxial or RCA cable were included.

    • Grr they have gone back to $199, the $118 was a steal then!
