  The problem with extremely low or free fares is you get bugger all if they cancel the flight and you may have to pay a lot more with another carrier at that point.

    I'm not quite sure how that works - I was under the impression that legally they have an obligation to get you to your destination and give you a place to stay and transport to/from if it was to be an overnight delay. Certainly I had this with Tiger flights back from the Gold Coast in the past. Jetstar mention similar regarding cancelled flights: https://www.jetstar.com/au/en/customer-guarantee - you are at their mercy of course - if you don't accept their reschedule they offer a $50 refund… I think the $66 return flights are definitely worthwhile!
