        • Well, that i5 probably doesn't support 2K res display properly, let alone 4K. Video decoding, the old 2nd gen core i5 is lackluster. Also, the power draw is different. Storage, it's likely limited to SATA3. Sure, the m.2/NVMe on this is only x2, but still better than SATA3.

I have an old small form factor pc that I really want to retire it. It's a second gen core i5 too. Yes, still beats low end NUC like devices, but still draws too much power. I get the appeal of using it as a router, but people doing that are tech savvy enough to know what they want.

          • @netsurfer: "but people doing that are tech savvy enough to know what they want"

            hahahaha

            • @ratoloko: I don't know when you bought that i5-2400. However, to be honest, i5-2400 is not something I would recommend in 2021. I get you purchased it second hand and the price is quite good.

A CPU with 95W TDP, in today's standard, I would expect much more performance.

J5005's Maximum memory bandwidth (GB/s): 35.76 (DDR4 does have bandwidth advantage over DDR3). But you know the annoying part? Like i5-2400, Intel crippled J5005 so it is also PCIe gen 2.0. Your so called 5 GT/s (Giga transfers per second) bus speed = PCIe gen 2.0. So given J5005 also supports PCIe gen 2.0, what do you think the bus speed would be? i5-2400, depends on the chipset (hopefully the board maker did not gone cheap, otherwise the USB 3 controller would be a 3rd party one instead of intel).

However, OPNSense on this Gigabyte device? That doesn't make sense.

Mate, some users use even Raspberry Pi to run OPNSense/pfSense hahaha
To run it as a router/firewall you don't need much.
Some dudes would die to buy this Gigabyte and add an extra network via USB-c to run router/firewall on it.
Aliexpress sells mini PC weaker than this one and people buy like crazy. The majority of them have 8GB only. The only difference is that from Aliexpress they come with 2-4x NIC already, this one has only 1x

I am running Intrusion Detection Systems, Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), Application Control, Network Analytics, TLS Inspection and Network Antivirus.
I don't need an i5 2021 model for that if you know what I mean, I do need a decent processor with AES, and at 16GB on my case. My CPU usage is like 5% with 50% memory usage.

Different worlds, I shouldn't have commented.

  • Can anybody recommend a decent external 2 drive bay that I can use with this for the purpose of home media/storage server (for 3.5 drives)? Or if the motherboard can be transferred to a bigger case?

    • Yeah I would like to know this too. Has anyone tried shucking these NUC units and put the motherboard into a bigger case with more space?

      • The motherboard inside is quite specific to the NUC body. In theory probably possible but not practical and you might as well buy a mitx board and case and build a new system that way.

    Edit: Out of stock again

Just picked this up from Milton and dead set, no power cable.

    • Yep, no (Clover Leaf) power lead, but on the upside this device ships with a CD. Now that's some good luck.

    • that doesn't sound right….. is there a contents list on the box?

"The BRIX is sold as a DIY PC kit, shipping with a NGFF M.2 Wi-Fi module pre-installed, plus a power adapter and cable conforming to local standards."

    • Really?

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5rEeBUyP5Y

Unboxing shows a power cable is included…

  • Back in stock for delivery.

  • Price jumped to $169 now?

    • It’s $169 in store at one location. When they run out of stock they show that one. Keep checking back, they have gone back in stock at least twice since this has been marked out of stock.

  • Looks like it’s back in stock again, party continues

Received mine this morning and, as @impatient pointed out, there's no C5 power cable. Bit of an annoyance.

  • I'm wondering if this one can take 1x8gb ram bar? Or 2666mhz will work?

    • I tried it with one 8gb spare sodimm @ work and it showed 8gb in the bios, then borrowed a 8gb sodimm from a laptop (different brand) - and it showed 16Gb in the BIOS.

I've got a 16gb kit (2x8) that is arriving tomorrow so I'll know if it actually boots into windows now that I've got it running with 8gb temporarily.

      • Maybe they meant by 8 GB max PER slot?

If so, dang it. Just bought 4GB x2 Crucial. :(

        • Maybe… I've now got two patriot Viper Gaming 8GB sticks in the brix and it's booted and running with 16GB.. Just running a memory diagnostic now to make sure the ram hasn't any bad cells.
