I'm dumbfounded as to why they continue to put 1GB of ram in these netbooks? It simply isn't enough to run an operating system under these days. And what? manufacture cost for an extra DIMM would be $10?

Anywho, with an extra gig of ram, this'd make a very nice netbook for the price.

    • It's a requirement from microsoft to qualify for a lower OEM price for windows 7.

The story begins when Microsoft announced that WinXP was no longer going to be sold and that Vista would be the OS of choice. Netbooks arrived and had various Linux distributions. Microsoft got irked by this and realised that the underpowered netbooks would never run Vista so they modified XP so that it would only address 1GB of RAM and set various other rules (max screen size, max storage size etc.) Many of these restrictions were later relaxed and when Win7 Starter Edition was released there were additional restrictions (no Aero Glass, limit to number of running apps). This would ensure a good market for other versions of Win7 that sell at a higher price.

In other words, it's not about cost of hardware, it's about towing the Microsoft line.

    • It simply isn't enough to run an operating system under these days.

You mean Windows. You could always upgrade the crippled "starter edition" of win7 with a full Linux install.
Maybe even OS-X? Though I think the latest version of that needs 2GB as well.

  • netbooks are soooooo two thousand and ten

      To be replaced by…?

tablets dude. Who needs a keyboard and a screen when you have touch for that size.

        • +2

Funny that, with all the tablets coming out with keyboard add-ons to make them more laptop like :P

    • Given that 70% of users just surf the web, send the odd e-mail and play a Flash-based game why does it need to change? These are hardly taxing it (OK, the Flash game probably is).

We carried my wife's Dell Mini-Inspiron 9 around the US for months. When I needed something with more grunt I just used LogMeIn to access my main desktop back home.

  • Goddammit, these cheap netbooks always seem so underpowered that they've remained unchanged for years! I'm not buying one until they put in a decent processor & a DVI/HDMI input

Its a good deal but its eerily similar to other cheap netbook deals

    • Be another 6 to 12 months and they'll be Windows 8 devices at that competiting with the tablet range

    • @backslash the Toshiba has hdmi out and Harmon kardon speakers that are amazing for its mini size. It was about $350 from officeworks.

  • Would be a great bargain had this had a 6-cell battery. My N270 chipset with 6-cell battery has more life.

    ok netbooks are situational

but for $228 this is a cheapie

my netbook, that I am using to type this post has comparable specs

Its fine for accessing the internet, wordprocessing and basic video

    and its very portable

How replaceable is the RAM? Easy access to the slot? Upgrade to 2GB?

My brother uses his 1015b to go on the net and play games on (-modern- major release games, full 3d stuff).

    These suckers are capable.

I still have a 901 EEE. Keyboard broke recently but I was able to replace it for $20. I wont let go of this netbook till it's fully dead and maybe not even then (unless it goes zombie on me!).

They have a niche and in that they are of great use.

    Sorry but: what a POS.

  • hackintosh

  • I have a Asus 1002HA that I'm trying to get rid of, it seems netbooks haven't really tanked in price but this is pretty low, if anyone is interested send me a PM (I'm in Perth) but you might be better off look at brand new.

Edit: Looking at the specs, the models looks quite a bit faster than the 1002HA, maybe even enough to play some games on low settings.

  • I saw this last week, it is in their end of year sales.
However, I am not too sure about this netbook because of the CPU.
In Asus website, it is marked as N455, and in HN website, it is marked as N455 in 1 page, and N570 in another page (check the spec and main page). Looks like HN themselves have no idea which CPU it has.

It is pretty good price; but if the CPU is not N570, then the one from Acer at OW for 267 is better.

    • maybe i'm missing something, but both pages say N570 to me. i can't see any reference to N455 on HN webpage…

also can't see acer for $267 on OW. there is an emachines one for $267…

not sure who's confused here…(i am!).

      • Ok, checked again, it has been fixed.
        Was on N455 before.
Anyway, do a google on X101H, most indicates it is N455.
Of course, this can be new batch that has N570 now.

      • Also, emachines is Acer…….
