eBay Gift Cards Balance Become Zero after a Failed Purchase Attempt

I read somewhere, maybe here on OzBargain, that eBay Gift Card balance can be forfeited due to system error.
Turns out that eBay gift card system is fragile and prone to error, as it just happened to me.

Background:
I cleared my Chrome browser cache for other reasons, just before the purchase.

Process:

  1. I added a hard drive into my cart.
  2. I went to check it out, added coupon code PLUSPR10
  3. I start adding my gift cards, they are $50 or $20 in value. I added a total of 7 or 8 cards.
  4. I click 'Confirm and Pay'
  5. Errors pop up, one of them say something like 'your have no balance'.

Result:
All entered gift cards values are now zero, and the purchase didn't happen.
My eBay account is also doing weird things, like I can't see my purchase history anymore.

Now chatting with eBay representative. Will update here.

Update 1:
eBay representative says that the balance will be credit back in a week or two, but most likely within 2 days.
Fingers crossed.

Update 2 on 15/3/2021
Talked to eBay 2 more times since first post. Was given 7-10 business days for credit back.

Update 3 on 7/4/2021
Still nothing, writing an email to eBay manager now…

  • Are you an eBay Plus member?

  • Sounds like a really weird issue but I'm also having trouble with eBay gift cards.
I recently purchased and returned an item over $1k which I purchased with gift cards.
Seller processed the refund a week ago and I still don't have balance refunded back to the cards.
Rep told me it could take 10 - 15 business days after the seller issues the refund until I get the balance back

    • When you check out something now (say a TV for example sake) do you see the card balances locked to your account?

      • No they don't. I've been checking everyday for them to appear during checkout.

        • +2

Hm that is very weird. Last time I got something refunded in store by BigW to an ebay gift card it was already in my account by the time I got home.

I guess you just have to trust the ebay staff and wait and see.

          • @currentfad: I've had this happen before but balance was available after 2 or 3 days.
Guess there's nothing to do but wait

  • These cards may be tied to your account after refund.

    • That's fine, as long as they do come back.

  • Jeez, what a hassle

  • +1

seems like this is becoming a more common issue… someone on here lost 1.2k in gift cards from ebay’s checkout glitch and many more people are still waiting for refunds

1.5k on the checkout glitch.. going on 60 days now

At least Ebay chat is an amusing way to pass time

I have seen the status and have got the confirmation that you will get the balance within 21 days. Also, previous member also suggested the same, but that was because of usual process, then you talked with Angelina today and she escalated it and this is the update on the confirmation.

Please do not worry the deducted balance will be auto credited to you as you have not used it on the item with in 21-25 days and this the maximum timeline

Let me send a follow up report to our gift card team for this.

It's my pleasure helping you.Thank you also for choosing eBay.Have a blessed day and stay safe!

Sure, I am having difficulty in checking the details due to connectivity issue thanks for being connected on chat.

Thank you so much for your patience it is appreciable please do not worry let us work together and resolve the issue.

Thank you so much for being connected on chat and supporting for such long with patience. I have checked with the details and details and details and see that this deduction was due to some technical glitch.

    • I don't think they even bother to type, they just press a button for one of their scripted comments as I see the same again and again:

Here I can see that I need to escalate the issue to the team and we will get back to you within 48 to 72 hours via email.

Yes rest assured, I will take personal follow up in your concern and will revert you back.

^^^ Liar liar pants on fire. Every rep said the same, but I never got any response even after a week!

      • Yes, I got their response every time I get on live chat. I even asked them to transfer me to a manager which they did, what is worse is that their manager said the same thing I will get an update and then disconnect my chat! Of course nothing happen afterwards

  • +1

Same thing happened to me a week ago too !!! They kept brushing me off, saying we will get back to you in 72 hours blah blah (never did). Coincidentally, the service feed back link expires after 48 hours.

eBay representative says that the balance will be credit back in a week or two, but most likely within 2 days.

They said the same to me. After 72 hours, I contacted them again. Rep made me waited and waited and never responded. Another 72 hours, I contacted them, this rep said he will personally look into it and get back to me in 72 hours. Never did!

Feel free to bombard them your issues:

Same, lost 1.2k using 8 gift cards on eBay, and their customer supports are giving me false promise they I would receive the refund, it’s been 5 weeks and still no refund. Endless conversation via live chat, email and phone call. Nothing helps, may need legal action, such a horrible company to deal with

    • Oh my. Guess I’m not the only one. What’s so hard for them to fix an obvious glitch?

      • I have provided them the gift card numbers 10 times and they even sent me an email saying the gift cards were used and ask me to report it to the police. They can check the number on their system but they refuse to refund, what a shame.

  • I had a refund failed to return to the gift card. Contacting ebay has been a waste of time - they transfer me from one rep to another to another then eventually they told me to contact paypal or my debit/credit card provider. WTF it was paid entirely with ebay gift card.
I think ebay gift card is processed thru paypal so there's not much ebay can do to the fix the issue. Only paypal can fix it.

    • +1

I contacted PayPal and they said they can’t see the transaction and ask me to contact eBay again :(

      • Please let us know any updates.

        • No update, sent multiple follow up to eBay, no reply. Request a call back from manager, they never call me. I am going to submit a email claim to the court

  • Not headed in the right direction..just checked the balance and instead of coming up as zero..get not a valid number/ can't be found
Any movement is good I guess..

    • Any update?

      • Followed the advice below to email and now my account has been terminated

        via chat

As per review, the account is suspended from eBay indefinitely due to risks imposed based on your buying behavior in general.

..still getting the runaround on chat about the gift cards

I finally got my money back, I emailed the managing director of eBay Australia Tim MacKinnon on [email protected] and someone from his office contacted me after about one week of emailing and refunded me the gift card balance. He refunded me via PayPal as I requested. I suggest everyone who have the same issue email Tim and you will get your money back

    • Followed your suggestion and just had my account terminated…

      • Happened to me too. Lost over $300 due to account termination (with no explanation given). When I asked for further information on why my account was banned they would not share and disconnected the chat.

        • +4

          lol@disconnected chats

Please wait while we review your case
2mins later cut and paste the parting ways script and end chat..

Not writing it off yet.. chargeback, small claims …fair trading..

      • +1

Any update on this matter? What's their reason for terminating your acount?

      • Did you get your account back or at least an explanation? I was going to try emailing the managing director but your comment definitely scared me off

        • +2

          Refunded via fair trading
Didn't bother trying to get the account back… it's in their t&c they are not required to provide a reason

They're aware of the discussion in here about it… AND it's really not that hard to create unique new accounts

          • @randomusername2017: Thanks, I have other gift cards tied to my account and don't want more hassle than I need to.
Will probably need to lodge a complaint with Fair Trading QLD

            • +1

@FireRunner: Sounds like you'll probably end up with more gift cards attached to your account.
eBay chat is so far removed from operations in Australia..it's pointless, better off trying to call t&s team 1800 427 403

              • @randomusername2017: Tried the number, you get a robot telling you to visit the eBay help pages and then it hangs up.
I don't mind if it ends up with the GCs attached to my account but so far it's been a never ending wait.
Contacted Fair Trading, hopefully they can resolve it

    • Didn’t get any response from them or acknowledgment after contacting.

    • Never heard back from him or his office.

    Update:

Today I chatted with eBay Customer Service again, and now they claim that I should go to Coles and Shopback for refund, as these Swap Gift Cards are purchased through them. I'm like, you must be kidding me…
Anyway, I'm writing to Tim MacKinnon now, if anything bad happens, I'll try legal solutions.

    • I am going through with the same scenario and my transaction failed on 14th March and still nothing from eBay. I have used $800 worth of gift cards and now have a zero balance in them. Tried contacting chat/Twitter/US eBay Phone number for customer service/emails to eBay but nothing. All I get is apology emails from them and how they are investigating the issue and escalating it further. Not sure where they are escalating but it seems there is no legal solution to this problem as well. No particular ombudsman looks after these issues. eBay customer service even won’t take a complaint as they are still investigating and suggested me to go to eBay’s office in Sydney if I want to make a complaint… which is a complete joke.

      • +1

Try email Tim. I emailed yesterday and got a call from his team today apologies for the inconvenience, recognise the problem and will issue a refund in next few days into my Paypal account. I’ll have to see that money before putting this mess to a stop.

        • Did you got your refund?

        • Did you get a refund? I have a different issue (returned item but cards didn't get refunded), eBay chat keeps promising they'll resolve it soon but nothing ever happens

    F#*k eBay … 2 months no resolution

Fair trading/chargeback refund within a week

Anyone in NSW.. Fair trading have a bunch of gift card cases going back to January… Join the queue

    • Really? it just happened to me… what should I do?

    • Did you able to get your refund sorted? eBay is just going around in circles that they need more time to investigate. It is been more than 4 weeks now and no response.

      • Refund via fair trading NSW
I had the same experience with eBay "help"…
        Good luck!!:)

        • Just made a complaint on NSW Fair trading as eBay customer service is non existent. Apart from keep waiting for them to investigate, they have no further updates still after 4 weeks.

          • @Alwysl8: Did you get a refund? My gift cards weren't refunded after returning item and eBay chat is useless

            • +1

@FireRunner: Not yet as eBay is now stating they can’t even escalate further as it was already escalated couple of times and I need to be patient for the relevant team to complete its investigation. It is now 6 weeks since this happened and no resolution from eBay.

However, NSW fair trading responded stating that they would be discussing this matter with eBay and would reply in the next 14 days.

    • Hi, sorry to disturb! I have the same issue. May I know how your FairTrading representative contacted ebay? I had Fair Trading involved but the lady said she was not able to reach ebay at all. Appreciate!

  • +3

Finally got my refund via NSW Fair Trading. Ebay customer service was a complete waste of time. Also, it doesn’t matter which state you are in as the eBay head office is in NSW, you can file case with NSW Fair trading. It took me 10 mins to file the case online, and approx three weeks to get the funds back.

    • +1

Your experience seem to match many cases here. Good to know that that Fair Trading works fine as a last resort.

    • Hi, sorry to disturb! I have the same issue. May I know how your FairTrading representative contacted ebay? I had Fair Trading involved but the lady said she was not able to reach ebay at all. Appreciate!

      • This is what my friend is experiencing. Did you have further update since June?

        • Sorry for late update. No luck for me. Ebay copied & pasted their sh*t T/C saying it's customer's full responsibility to keep one eye on the validity and my FT rep accepted it. I bet she didn't have any sense about ebay's anti-fraud system which was the real cause of my loss. I guess this quite depends on whether you are lucky enough to get a good FT rep.

          • @anjel: So she was able to reach to ebay afterall then?

            • @tajid: Yes, after 1wk+ wait and she get back to me with those BS T/C only.

    Final Update:

Received my refund via PayPal. It's been 2 months but at least it eventually arrives, without the need to go to Fair Trading.

  • +2

If anyone is wondering, I got my gift cards back. Took almost 3 months. Not sure if Fair Trading QLD did anything since they just appeared back in my account without being contacted by either Fair Trading or eBay. Terrible experience overall and they've killed all methods of contact other than the clueless chat support. Just glad I got my $1100 back

  • Happened to me just now with around $280 worth of eBay GCs dammit. The purchase didn't go through yet the GC balances are all zero.

    • Tried again yesterday before the eBay Plus Sony XM4 promo ended thinking this might be just a one-off but nope happened again with $240 in eBay GCs unbladdybelievable. I've been using eBay GCs for yonks and never experienced such issues clearly there are major problems with the eBay payment processing system and the use of multiple GCs atm.

Anyways sent an email to Tim MacKinnon on [email protected] and received a reply the next day (cheers Tim and to @Buy2Much for the contact info). Then few days later received this email via eBay messages:

Thank you for reaching out to eBay. To ensure your concerns are appropriately addressed, Tim Mackinnon has asked that I respond on his behalf. I understand that you have some concerns regarding the balance on some gift cards that was not refunded. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

After reviewing your account and the transaction in question, I am able to confirm that the refund has not processed yet. Typically, these refunds are processed via an automated system that takes anywhere from 7 to 21 days to complete. In order to avoid any duplicate refunds, we are not able to manually intervene without giving the automated process adequate time to run its course. I appreciate your patience and understanding.

Recognizing that you were attempting to utilize a discount code that will no longer be available to use once these gift cards are refunded. I want to assure you that we will issue you a voucher for the full discount amount once the balance has been returned to your gift cards.

Thank you again for your time. I expect to be in touch with you over the next few weeks as this gets sorted out.

      Kind Regards,

      eBay Executive Office

  • I've had it where the payment went through using ebay gift card, but paypal cancelled the payment after 1 week of pending (says the seller). money came back to the ebay account with no issues. that was a year ago though.

  • After a few emails and a couple of months managed to get the GC funds refunded into my PayPal account. However I probably won't be using/purchasing eBay GCs again in large amounts.

    • May I ask if you bought a foreign currency like USD item using multiple eGCs? I had silmilar exp but a small total amount.

      • +1

No but I did use I think 8 GCs or whatever the max allowed both times. Maybe that played a part. In the past I have used max number of GCs on plenty of occasions without any problems tho.

Other than that not sure what could have caused it aside from glitches/technical issues from their end.

      • Hi, did you get your gift card balance back? this just happened to me today and ebay live chat didn;t help at all.. they said they cant see history of gift card usage even though I gave them the voucher number.

        • I think it should be refunded in 24 hrs in most cases.

          • @Neoika: Fingers crossed,chat rep said to wait 10 days. :|

        • You'll only be wasting your time trying to get it sorted via their support chat. They are useless for the most part will just give you some BS.

Hopefully you'll get the funds returned usually it goes back to your eBay account/GCs within a month or so.

If that doesn't happen then you might need to lodge an online claim via Office of Fair Trading etc and escalate the matter (eBay won't be of much help).

Also keep the GC details until you sort it out. I don't use high value eBay GCs anymore just not worth the hassle you never know when it might glitch out again (happened twice in my case).

  • Had same issue today. Paid using $400 gift cards and $100 on credit card.
Now GC's have no balance and the failed transaction doesnt even show on records.
Will have to chat with them tomorrow.

    • Give it 24 hrs, it may be back.

I had a similar exp for small amount purchase. Got ebay email (Action required: Your payment needs to be re-sent) asking me to pay again. My purchase was in USD with 2 giftcards split pay. I also got Harris Tech refund on the same day to the same giftcard used for this failed purchase. Not sure if they are related.

I think using multiple cards in AUD to pay for other currency items may cause problem. I paid again with just one card without problem later.

      • Yes actually I was using aud gift cards and an aud cc to pay for an item sold in USD. So stupid.

        • A day or two isn't too uncommon. I think I've had it take a week once or twice.

          • +1

@FireRunner: Cannot believe in this day and age, transactions can be processed in seconds yet refunds can take up to weeks and constant follow ups.

Edit: also have emailed Tim’s address but I see he just recently left ebay for a better gig..

      • +2

Update - credit card refunded, but gift cards no balance still. No response from Tim’s email and spent most of the afternoon going around in circles with customer service

        edit cards credited

        No email update
        No app update
Just random. Whatever the hell ebay is doing, this is pretty unprofessional.

  • +1

This just happened to me too (for the second time
I might add). Paid in USD, balance get deducted from gift card and then stated payment unsuccessful. Last time the balance was returned to my gift card after about 24 hours, this time I was told it would take up to 3 weeks - like I don’t have anything else better to do than to just keep checking. 😫 the service rep on chat asked me for screenshots of the transaction going through abs then not going through… like anyone continuously screenshots all their eBay transaction at different stages. Wtf. I mean, why are you asking me for a screenshot of an email you sent me? Ridiculous.

    • Did you use 2 or more giftcards? I think that's problem in eBay's system.

      • No, just the one gift card :(

        • Apparently the refund needs to be process by PayPal. Hopefully you'll get the funds returned usually it goes back to your eBay account/GCs within a month or so. If that doesn't happen then you might need to contact eBay over the phone and escalate the matter. Keep the GCs until you sort it out.

You'll only be wasting your time trying to get it sorted via their support chat. They are useless for the most part will just give you some BS. Mine took months to sort out and I contacted Tim MacKinnon on [email protected] and that helped. Not sure if that's still an active email address though I guess worth a try at least.

I don't use high value eBay GCs anymore just not worth the hassle.

  • I just prepared my letter to the provided email.

    Dear Mr. Tim MacKinnon,

I have purchased an eBay article on 10.12.21 and paid the article item number xxxxxxxxxx.

Unfortunately this failed on the first attempt, due to a glitch as confirmed from your staff. I paid it on the first attempt with EBay gift cards, a voucher code and AfterPay. I have used 2X $10, 1x $5 in gift cards, $4.99 in AfterPay and $10 off through the code AFTERPAY10.

All payments and code were valid but eBay said it was not successful and I had to buy it again. It also disappeared mystically from my buying history. So I bought it again with a new gift card, $25, PayPal and a new voucher code I have received from your staff to replace AFTERPAY10.

I still wait for my gift card balance back on my gift cards ($25) and your staff told me first it takes maximum 48 hours. In later chats they told me it takes up to 21 days. I read now in social networks horror stories, that people still wait months for their gift card balance turning up.

I kindly ask you can you please credit me back my $25 gift card balance (in total). I can provide you with all relevant information. Please see chat transcripts:

    SR# 1-xxxxxxxx

    Many thanks in advance.

If you don't get a reply I would suggest you ring up eBay. I recall reading somewhere on OZB that Tim might have moved on. Also have your gift card numbers and transaction date/details handy when you do.

      • I was in the chat again and same blabla. The only difference this time was, that they actually asked for the gift card numbers I used. I won’t use eBay gift cards anymore after this however this ends. I honestly found way better deals on Amazon prime anyway. eBay becomes a joke and is only good to snatch a bargain sometimes from private sellers or stores to buy 2nd choice items. Overall Ebay is becoming a joke with their weekly garbage sale…

        • +1

Yeah chat is pretty much useless unless you get lucky and find a rep who actually wants to help. Unfortunately 99% of the time all you'll get is copy and paste answers or that it'll be investigated but they won't get back to you.

Yeah using eBay gift cards not worth the hassle for mine clearly they still have issues to sort out. I tried to find their number but not sure if they have one any more? However just tried selecting Contact us > Account > Signing up for an eBay account > Have us call you and on there you can enter your number. Maybe you can try that.

If none of that works then you can contact Office of Fair Trading and they should be able to retrieve your funds. Actually I would probably recommend you start that process now given that you have waited awhile already. You'll have to to fill out some stuff online including your eBay ID, GC numbers and transaction details etc. They'll get back to you in a few days and that's how mine got sorted after it happened the second time.

  • Btw did this happen in December 10th or October 12th?

    • December

      • +1

Well afaik in that case you'll just have to wait around 1-3 weeks to see if the funds get returned back to your GCs or eBay account. They won't step in otherwise from what I've been told because apparently these refunds are processed via an automated system within 7-21 days. Only if that doesn't happen will they step in and manually refund via PayPal.

        • But why does it take up to 21 days? I still wait and now it’s 11 days already.

          • @Thrifty Dan: Well this is what I received via eBay messages from the eBay Executive Office when I was going through my GC ordeal.

"After reviewing your account and the transaction in question, I am able to confirm that the refund has not processed yet. Typically, these refunds are processed via an automated system that takes anywhere from 7 to 21 days to complete. In order to avoid any duplicate refunds, we are not able to manually intervene without giving the automated process adequate time to run its course. I appreciate your patience and understanding."

            • @dins: So what happened after the 21 days?

              • +1

@Thrifty Dan: Well this happened to me twice both with $200+ worth of GCs. First one I think ended up being automatically refunded within the 21 days but the other one I had to lodge a claim via QLD Office of Fair Trading. Then it was manually refunded by eBay via PayPal but that took a couple of months or so to sort everything out.

                • @dins: What a bloody nonsense. Why can’t they manually interfere with their own system to fix it. It was a hassle anyway mucking around when it happened. That’s really the least to stress the customer waiting for his gift balance for 21 days… I won’t buy at eBay anymore after this disaster and after using my gift card balance when it comes back. Amazon prime is much better. Chat 24/7 and often they instantly refund in the chat or give you a discount.

                  • @Thrifty Dan: Yeah I haven't bought any eBay GCs after what I had to go through. The 2-3% ain't worth it for mine.

                    • +1

@dins: I use my ShopBack vouchers for Amazon and Coles. Collected too many last days with all those specials. 50%, 100% and 10% Cashback.

                      • +1

@Thrifty Dan: Yeah Amazon GCs is where it's at! 🍻

                        • @dins: EBay should be forced to deal better with those issues. If that is not a new problem they should have a closer look at EBay and fine them.
