Thanks, I have also. Hilton offer is dropping away a bit, only $80 back but still good.

  • +2

I only had the hertz offer. Good thing I hire from hertz monthly! Thanks OP

  • +8

Perfect timing, thanks for the heads up OP. Checking out of a Hilton today with $400 spend.

    • +1

Hopefully that was a business trip and the company will reimburse you. If so, you just made $80!

      • Not a business trip, just personal. But since the AFR business summit is on in Sydney right now (hosted at this very Hilton where I’m staying), I will claim this entire trip (flights, accommodation, transport, F&B etc) as a tax deduction for ‘investment purposes’.

  • -2

Looks like the offer is for spend at the restaurants and bars at the participating hotels and not for accommodation but thanks anyway OP.

    • What makes you think that?

      • -3

        Check the details.

        • +2

          Unlike you, I did:

Payments must be made at the front desk or at a participating restaurant, bar or spa within the property.

That was for Hilton; Marriott says the same thing.

          • @kerfuffle: So you think booking hotel also included?

            • +2

@ssn654318369: Always been the case. In your statement it shows up as Marriott or Hilton regardless of whether it’s spent with at their restaurant or accommodation.

          • +1

@kerfuffle: Marriott offer can be used for online bookings.

And yes. All offers are of course able to be used for room bookings

    • +1

The terms for the Hilton offer looks like it can't be used for prepaid rates booked online. Looks like it's only eligible for standard (cancellable) rates, for which you would settle your account when you checkout.

      • From my memory it's not the online front process your payment, it's the hotel will key-in your card detail from their end even if you book-in prepaid rate.

        • So it may still work online since the payment through Amex will come through the same?

It looks like there's free cancellations up to 72 hours so I might try and see if I get the confirmation email after spending

          • @Skxkwkei: Did you end up having any luck with this? Thanks in advance.

            • +1

@IngenuityDenied: I waited a few days and the transaction never came up on my Amex so I cancelled it and booked for cheaper elsewhere

  • The Hilton offer is in-store only so not for prepay online bookings

    • But not sure how they will know because you feed your card details on website which then goes to the hotel you staying at and then they charge your card.

So not sure why they are "Excluding online bookings"

      • That's a good point and it did seem pretty odd they'd do that - surely they want upfront payments

        • But yes, I should also add that when you book one of the discounted rates they want payment upfront so local hotel will use CC details you give them now to charge you now upfront applying a credit at checkout for the outstanding balance.

          • @bargrin: So do you think the offer would still work for the cheaper discounted rates?

It's a fair difference for the dates I'm looking at which would cancel out the saving from the offer

            • @Skxkwkei: I think it should still work.

When ever I used AMEX deal on discounted Hilton.com room rate it would require upfront payment where local hotel would hit my AMEX sometimes the same day, next day or even a week later as a upfront "deposit" which was equal to entire stay amount.

Since they take the "deposit" off the AMEX , then I always got the deal.

They then apply the deposit to your checkout to cover off final amounts when you leave.

      • I find with Amex they aren’t trying to exclude, but their terms will cover when a cash back might not happen. So I presume there are some instances where online gets charged straight away and doesn’t qualify. But good to know what you have shared.

Marriott is shit tier, claims to be 5 star but it's 1 star.

  • +1

Got none of the offers, have a card thru Amex themselves

    • I got the offers with Amex-issued cards (which is all of them these days anyway), on my standard Elevate, Velocity Escape and DJs Amex cards

  • +2

Nice offer from Marriott especially with the current double night / double points promotion for those interested in reaching lifetime status quicker.

    • Its a pity the Hilton offer expired at the end of last year and not currently running.

  • +3

    Thanks OP.
Tips: login to your account on Amex website, instead of the app. Somehow I can't find the deals on my Amex app.

  • +3

I had 7 or 8 available offers (but not saved) on my Plat Edge. After saving these 3 to my card, all other available offers disappeared.

Does Amex now impose some kind of max number of offers per card?

    • +2

I think it's an issue with the app - I had to close and reopen and they'd show up again

    • same here. weird

    • +1

I had the same issue, but they re-appeared when i closed my app and reopened it. Hope this helps!

    • Looks as though they may start implementing max amount of offers per person.
For now it seems the work around is to restart the app

    • +1

Same here, I have two basic cards and after signing up one or two offers, the rest disappeared. They never came back either when I restarted the app. Really strange.

  • Got none of these on my Platinum charge cards, Reserve or Platinum Edge cards. Weak.

  • Has anyone ever bought Marriott gift cards from a hotel front desk during these AMEX promos in the past? Do they trigger the cash back and more importantly, is it possible to redeem the value of the card at another Marriott property in Australia?

I'm thinking of buying a couple of gift cards for an upcoming interstate trip but based on Marriott's online gift card portal, you can only buy a gift card that is redeemable at a particular property and they redirect you to that property's website to complete the transaction.

    • I'll be careful around doing this. The last time I looked (for Hilton) the gift cards were provided using a third party provider, so it would not be eligible.

      • Yes, sorry I probably wasn't clear with my question. I was going to buy the gift cards from the Sydney Marriott hotel front desk (which hopefully should trigger the cash back?) but wanted to use the gift card to pay for a stay at an interstate Marriott property in the future. Is this possible?

For online gift cards, you can't get a general 'all Marriott properties' gift card and the purchase wouldn't trigger the AMEX cash back because it goes through a different website and not marriott.com.au.

I'm just not sure if gift cards bought in person operate the same way as those purchased online.

        • I have a vague recollection of doing this in the past and it was fine - kind of like paying for dinner on your hotel stay, if you pay in the restaurant it may not be correlated with the deal, but if you bill to your room, it will count because you make the payment for it at the front desk EFTPOS machine.

Just make sure you are paying on the same EFTPOS machine as people who pay at checkout, and I cant see any reason it wouldnt work out

        • I can't see why not if its processed directly at the front desk. Just make sure it does get put through at the front desk and not separately processed (as in your details recorded on a form and sent away for processing).

  • Strange my supplementary card had them but not my main / primary card. I didnt think that would happen.

  • Anyone know if dine at the Glass Brasserie in the Sydney Hilton would qualify for Amex?

  • IHG online payment option is "Book now, Pay later", so cannot use the offer for trips after 15/05/2021

  • AVIS has removed most of their "Pay Now" options online…

  • has anyone come across amex travel credit being available before the annual fee is charged?

  • Does anyone know if the Hertz offer will kick-in if you prepay for a rental online (actual rental will be late in the year)?
The terms say rental must be complete but I'm not sure how they would tell if the rental is complete if you prepay in full.

wonder if this applies to Hayman Island IHG if I call ahead and prepay their $400 return ferry
