How Much Discount Did You Get off Your Brand New Car?

How much have people gotten off the RRP of a new car at the dealership out of curiosity? What is the norm? Including from deals from the past 2-3 years.

EDIT: In particular, but not limited to, cars like the i30, Cerato, Impreza, Mazda 3, Corolla, Civic..

  • I think it depends on the car's size, model and brand. Which car models are you looking for in particular?

    • edited.. small car segment mainstream brands

not much nowadays.. you might get more for a trade in to bring down the RRP of the new car

    • They still stick you with the trade in value being lower than the car's true value so you're not really saving in the end. Unless you can be sure the trade in is a good price.

Haven’t bought in that segment but my strategy for getting as big as possible discount is to negotiate the best possible price with a local dealer in Canberra ( the one closest and most convenient to me) then take that price and call up dealers in Sydney and Melbourne and shop that price around and see who will beat it. Once I’ve got the lowest price over the phone go back to my local dealer and ask them to match it. It’s worked each time. Got me a couple of extra thousand off the “best” price last time. The Canberra dealers have always matched. Obviously the process should work the same wherever you are.

I'm guessing this is pre covid. Times have changed.

My Toyotas especially our Corollas and Camrys are worth more than when I bought them in the last 5 years. lolz

The brand new cars in our family didn't get much off from Toyota compared to the discounts we got at Audi, Porsche and Mercedes. Our Audi S3 we got 15% off, Mercedes E63 was no discounts, it was just more stupid options. Audi SQ5 we got a bunch of extra options for 'free' + 5% discount off RRP. Porsche Meccan was around 9.5% off with a bunch of options on finance. Audi A3 we got 15% off through a finance company.

      humble brag

Honestly, man. I live in Sydney and these cars are common. We're not rich. Some of these cars are owned by extended family members who have their own small businesses.

IN the last 15 years, our houses prices went up by 2.5 times.

        I'm a Toyota person, though.

      Porsche Meccan or Macan?

      • I dunno. I don't own it. We got the black interior package so it gets hot as hell. I don't like the car because the back seats are not spacious and it's hard to get babies in and out.

        • Because it's not a big car and if you had babies in capsules you would get a Cayenne. You can't blame the car on poor research.

          • @MS Paint: The Cayenne was too expensive.

            • @Orico: Then don't get a Porsche. Get a CX9 or Prado or something.

              • -2

                @MS Paint:

You can't blame the car on poor research

Yes, I can. It was poor design by Porsche to limit back seat room when all their other competitors have ample room like GLC, SQ5, RAV4 etc. It does have its perks apart from that.

                Get a CX9 or something.

Why the hell would I get a CX9 over a Porsche Mecan? The CX-9 has terrible steering, too big and isnt' sporty at all. We didn't buy the car for child seat room. It's just one of the disadvantages.

                • @Orico: Just don't say you got the 2.0 litre model and I'll move on

                  • -1

@MS Paint: We didn't get the turbo. It's being driven by a small and sensible woman not a psycho from Bankstown.

                    • @Orico: But every engine option on the Macan is turbo charged or do you mean you didn't get the 3.6L turbo?

                      • @MS Paint: Mecan S. The salesman tried to force the GTS and Turbo down our throats but it will rarely ever do more than 100 km/h. All it does is ferry two infants around Sydney. lol
0-100 km/h in 5.3 seconds is insane as it is.

@Orico: Ahhh the 3.0L turbo. Nice.

All it does is ferry two infants around Sydney. lol

Then why complain about lack of child room if that's it's sole purpose.

WHy do women complain? Our front yard is like a parking lot so I'll find myself sometimes driving someone else's car at work because they've parked behind me and are still sleeping.

Yes, I can. It was poor design by Porsche to limit back seat room…

The little sports coupe I drive doesn't fit the fridge I like to carry every now and then. What poor design, I say! lol

                  /s

                  • @bobbified: It's almost like it's totally out of line to ensure enough space for baby seats.

                    • @Orico: It sure is, right?

But not to worry because you'd think that anyone who needs to be able to fit baby seats would surely check before buying, right? 😜

                      • @bobbified:

It does fit fine but it's not as roomy as their competitors.

    • Which Mercedes dealer did you buy from?
I managed to get 3 years free service with mine but no further reductions on car.
I bought off Mercedes North Shore (chatswood)

      • Mercedes-Benz Sydney.

I am an engineer who works with car manufacturers so one of our clients said he can get us a good price on the Mercedes. I've just had really bad luck with Mercedes in the past with their C63 faults (not my car).

Not sure what sort of discount you'd get if buying at the moment. In the past I've managed to get a good discount on both of our cars, got a bit over 16% off RRP for my i30 SR, got a bit over 20% off RRP for our Outlander. I don't think I could live with myself if I paid RRP for a new car!!

    • Is that without trading in your old car?

    • How much did you pay for Outlander and which dealer was it?

      • Sorry, I should have mentioned I traded a car on both occasions, but the discount was there regardless of my trade. This was a few years back and prices have no doubt gone up quite a bit.

  • +6

Zero discount on my Mclaren F1.

  • +2

A week ago, roughly 10% off a Mazda CX-5 Maxx Sports

  • +1

Got around 20% off a C43 coupe factory built (dont like black interior) with 4 years free servicing. This was about 3 years ago

    • And probably around the same on a brand new X3 last year with 5 years free servicing

  • +4

I had to pay list price for my Bentley. But they throw in a free pair of fluffy dice.

  • Got a 22% discount on my Demo VW with 3k on the clock.

    Cant see much discounting anymore.

    • Got a 22% discount depreciation factored in on my Demo VW with 3k on the clock.

      (Still good value IMO)

15% off brand new Mazda 3

    • Nice. Was this EOM, EOFY etc? Did you just offer 15% off the RRP?

      • M day. Negotiated over the phone

  • +1

Including from deals from the past 2-3 years.

Pointless in a Covid world, with lack of stock across most manufacturers.

Supply and demand dictates negotiating power

Wow, how many cars have you bought recently? From Kluger etc in 2019, to CRV in 2020, now to a small car

Or are we just test dummies for your university assignments?

Poor uni student, yet asking about new cars… You sure about that?

I'm actually not saving for anything specifically. Only a few grand which I've got on the side after expenses i.e. the lowest category. The question and poll was mainly due to curiosity as I was under the assumption that others had a lot.

    That was 4 months ago…

  • Um why was this user disabled?

    • Lol maybe from me calling them out? Interesting

    • Maybe he met with a terrible accident.

    • Spackbase showed them up to be larping so they ran off by the looks of things.

  • The poster has disabled/deactivated their OzBargain account, therefore we will close comments on this post.

    Thanks all.
