SpaceTalk SP-1005 3G (Grey, Pink, Red) Kids Smartwatch w/ Phone & GPS $229 (Was $299) + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ JB Hi-Fi

80

Saw this deal on the front page of the JB Hi-Fi catalog. Looks like they're discounting the older model to clear inventory, but my son has the newer version (Spacetalk Adventurer) and it's awesome. Since giving him the watch he's riding his bicycle home afterschool everyday and no longer staying in Oshclub. A couple of huge benefits with this arrangement is it gives him more independence by being home for a couple of hours himself. This allows him to do his homework and calls us when he gets home from his watch. And in true ozbargain fashion, it pays for itself in a month with no longer paying Oshclub fees!

This older model is only 3G and doesn't have as great of a battery life in comparison to the new adventurer model, but if you're thinking of trying it out, it's a good deal

Note that this requires a SIM card and there is a $5 monthly subscription fee similar to Life360. So account for an ongoing $15/month fee if buying this.

Best SIM card deal is the woolies $10 / month SIM Pre-paid plan which uses Telstra's network and every month you get a 10% discount off your groceries (which pays for the subscription fees). I actually signed up for the $60 12GB 180 plan ($10/month) as it had more data, but the watch barely uses any data except for software updates and checking the weather.

Don’t waste your money on this. Not worth at all. Expensive and then have to pay monthly subscription as well on top.

    • Can you suggest a better alternative?

TCL movie time watch is much better with no subscription fee

        • Agree 100% with jrt2020's comment. Last year Australia post were selling the TCL for $129 delivered. No subscription and the data use is minimal so will only cost you $5 first year then $15 a year on an Aldi SIM to have a method to track or contact your children.

Also TCL is 4G where Spacetalk is 3G that will stop working 3 years time in Australia

I highly recommend this brand no monthly fees either.

Works overseas as well. Really good functionality as well.

I got my whole family on this kidsoclock.com.au it's 4G, has GPS, you can use any carrier with no monthly subscription fees for $129.95. You can lock extra functions during school hours so it's just a normal watch and it doesn't look too childish. Battery life isn't great, you only get around 2 days but the parent can get a notification to charge when watch is 20%

Thanks for sharing https://kidsoclock.com.au/ its made in Australia too :).

          • @vneat: That's what I thought but I think it's actually made in China. The site is Australian though, with Aussie support.

  • 21st century apron strings.

  • You can get them a cheap iphone 5 < $100.

The challenge with phones is that schools don't allow them and if you give your child a cheap iPhone, then you're exposing them to the entire internet / social media. It depends on how old your child is. But yes, if they're teenagers, an iPhone is much more practical.

then you're exposing them to the entire internet / social media.

Nope, the screen time features on the iphone are pretty good, you can select which apps they can and can't use and at what times.
Also, they are easy to track from any PC or other iphone if you them up in your family group.

  • My 5yr old just lost her 100$ Fitbit Jr at school. $229 ain't worth the risk!

5yr old should get those $15 cheap activity watch on ebay.

      • It was a Minnie Mouse themed one for xmas. Lesson learnt.

If the $100 fitbit jr had GPS / cell, then you'd be able to see where it is… haha

    • Grab a Xiaomi Mi band 5. Can be had for under $40 sometimes, colour screen, variety of watch faces. We replaced my kid's crappy Garmin Jr with a Mi band and they love it.

      • I agree. I bought mi band 5 for myself and kid took mine and he doesn't want to go back to gramin jr.
